Notes

This is the "lucky" seventh batch of songs for Kim. It's actually more of the same mix of sloppy improvisation and pre-written cheese. Musically, this one's pretty dead.

Songs

Only Copies

Funny how I assumed a music company would be interested in this stuff. Or did I? Was I making fun of myself? I can't tell. What did I say at the end???

Lyrics to "Only Copies":

as of right now you have the only copies of
poor escape, just stupid, and stand up south africa
so if i die then just send those off to some music company
and they'll ???

Coup d'Etat

What "modern prophets"? Was this my idea of band name? Hmm...

Anyway, the lyrics are about the senselessness of political violence. It's funny/sad that the news is still full of this stuff 20 years later!

I later recorded a version of this with IPECAC. The lyrics were the same but the music was completely different.

Lyrics to "Coup d'Etat":

INTRO:
this is a song i wrote on april 4th and today is april 8th
it's called "coup d'etat" and it's from the modern prophets song
  1 2 3 4
  1 2 3 4

  this song is dedicated
to those who feel the world won't be around in 10 years
  in 10 years
that in a decade the bombs will just destroy the earth
  irreversible damage, irreversible damage

  if you don't think i don't have a voice
then just give on out, ha ha
again, if you don't think that have a voice
then just give out ha ha

VERSE:
  cheated workers, records fake
  burglaries, bills they take
  arguments, fists awake
  riots start, tensions break

  mass revolts, lives at stake
  weapons drawn, muzzles shake
  first bloodshed, bullets rake
  cops called in, big mistake

  waves of blood, fakes caked
  stores ablaze, children baked
  massive battles, huge outbreak
  towns erupt, cities quake

  allies part, friendships ache
  rockets launch, missiles snake
bombs are dropped, holes they make
  human flesh, stench like steak

CHORUS:
  coup d'etat, overtake
  coup d'etat, overtake, hey
  coup d'etat, overtake, hey
  coup d'etat, overtake

all this death, for what sake
all this death, for what sake
all this death, for what sake

BRIDGE:

  another leader falls
  all in an endless cycle
  an eternal waterfall

  woah
i think i was about 20 people too short in this band for that song
i had so much to worry about, ouch
the name of that song was, as i said several times, coup d'etat

Living with Radon

This was before I teamed up with Jon or any other Anchovies. So, I guess Kush and Lav brought their instruments over? Funny, I don't remember that at all; I thought we only played at their house. Amazing what 20 years can do to your memories!

Anyway, as for the song, well: yuck. This is a dud.

Lyrics to "Living with Radon":

ok this next one is another one i practiced today with my friends over
it doesn't have any lyrics
oh i bet that just kills ya

here we go
it's called living with radon in your head

rather trumpety and short
some people like it short

Big Band Beat Box

Daydreaming about having a big band at my disposal.

Lyrics to "Big Band Beat Box":

i bet you expected some big band
imagine: 50 people up on page
all of them have keyboards
5 drummers
all these lights are flashing around
and one of the drummers goes
1 2 1 2 3 4

[scat]

something like that
but it has to be a little more professional
i admit that i am a very humble, humble band

Living with Radon 2

Another song about the dangers of radon. Fortunately, this one has lyrics (which sound improvised), and is quite funny in bits.

I think "Face" was our new band name. Hmm, I think I liked "Triplets" better.

Lyrics to "Living with Radon 2":

we practiced this one today
but the only problem is
i don't have the other guy here
lav is the only one who came

living with radon part 2

living with radon in my head
in an hour i'll be dead
a cancerous growth will be found
no way to cut out that mound

i'll be dying in the hospital room
no way to foretell my doom
just blood out my ears and out my nose
internal bleeding, that's how it goes

i wish that lav were here
so much easier when he's around
but he left because he had to fear
where there's radon, where it could be found

radon makes your brain itch, radon makes you... cough
radon makes your brain itch ...cough
radon makes your brain baa ... cough
blaa ... cough

it has its effects, it slurs your speech
makes you unpleasant to be around
and the problem is nobody knows
just where radon can be found

living with radon in my brain
you can laugh if you want to
but i don't think it's
just a silly game

i don't put on stunts like that
i don't put on things like that
it's not my nature to be so demented
i'm just a radon victim

living with radon in my brain
hurt so much i can't even see
my eyes fog up
i can't even see the keyboard

my ear stuff so up
that i am shouting but i don't know it

living with radon in my brain
makes me so agitated
that i can do mean things
so please forgive me

like this song is mean, no so clean
it's so dirty, it's really not pretty
like this song, it's mean, not real clean
it's so dirty, not pretty

oh we're face, hey
and we're out to win the race, hey
me and lav and kush are face
and we're out to win, we'll win the race, hey

we are face, hey
and we're out to win the race, hey
we are face, hey
and we're out to win the race, hey

hey hey hey hey

living with radon in my brain
  come in
we're living with radon in my brain
  come in
we're living with radon in my brain
  i'm coming
living, living, living with radon in my brain

if you get around there
you'll find that i'm staring in the distance
and you'll see that my eyes are so red
that you think they were bleeding

and when you say something
it seems like i cannot hear you
and i turn away
and walk into someone else

and i bump my way down the hall
not minding anyone at all
i just make my way clumbsily
to my locker

and then i try to brush my hair
but it's so that there's nothing there
it's all been released
it's all on the floor

there's a trail of hair and blood
leading to me
there's a, there's a trail of hair and blood
and it's leading to me, leading to me

i'm living with radon in my brain
it makes me feel so insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane

but i will survive
i'll find some way to stay alive
i'll push through this ugly incident
i'll make it just another accident that i do not get affected by
i just will be move by
i'll get by so
even though i feel so low

even though i feel so low
i'll get by, feel real high
even though i feel so low
i'll get by, i'll feel real high

living with radon in my brain
makes me go insane
makes me go insane
makes me go insane

living with radon
we're living with radon
and we're living with radon
oh we're living with radon
living with radon
living with radon
living with radon
living with radon
living with, in my brain

it eats your brain, it torments you
it eats away at your tissue
it eats your brain, torments you
it eats away at your tissue

it eats your brain, it torments you
it eats away at your tissue
it eats your brain
it eats your brain

it slurs your speech
makes you smell like a peach
it clogs your ears and your nose
fogs your eyes, breaks your toes

you're left as a cripple in an old wheelchair
a cancerous growth appearing below your hair

we're living with radon
living with radon
living with radon
living with radon

living with, living with radon in my brain, oh
oh
we're living with radon in my brain
living with radon, living
living with radon in my brain

but i'll push through, i'll survive
i'll find someway to stay alive
but i'll push through, i'll survive
i'll find someway to stay alive

living with radon in my brain
[scat]

so tired

Bad Ones Chatter

I was talking (and singing) about bad songs. The first line, about going "up", means that I was recording in the basement.

Lyrics to "Bad Ones Chatter":

all right, i will go up and empty the dishwasher
and i shall abandon this until tomorrow
but i know, that was awful, that was terrible, it was pitiful
but here's something to thing about
how bad were the bad ones on the first tapes
they were supra pitifula, right?
they were awful
they weren't even good enough to be said in spanish
they were sad
they were like

[scat]

yeah, they were like that
they were really nice and smarmy
and they were just stupid
that's right, ok, i'm getting loud
people in the next house are banging on our windows saying
"shut the kid up, shut the kid up"
all right, so i must comply with their requests
is that such a ???
see i can't even speak right
that's because

i've been living with radon in the brain
makes me go insane
makes me feel so blue
don't you know what i'm talking about
talking about
talking about
talking about
talking about
talking about
talking about

[scat]

all right i seriously have to go, because
honestly, i think there is something good on tv
no, no, actually, the only problem is
i have to go empty the dishwasher
and also my voice is dead
living with radon in my brain
seriously though
i must be going, all right
i really did --
well, i can't honestly say that i enjoyed all that racket
but i'm sure you will, and that's what counts, right?
or is it the other way around?
yeah, yeah, let me try this again
i'm sure you didn't really enjoy the racket
but i did, i did, yeah, that's what counts
i think it goes the other away around
i'm sure i didn't enjoy all that, you know,
but you did, yeah, yeah, that's it

Dad Split

I spontaneously asked my Dad to be a guest musician. When he finally agreed, I immediately started making fun of his musical ability. Jeesh! What an annoying little brat I was! No wonder he didn't join me very often!

Dad and I split the keyboard duties. I like the dark groove, but too bad it's so short!

Lyrics to "Dad Split":

TRAV:
dad, i need a guest musician
  please?
  one song
  please?
ok you wanna do a song?

DAD:
  are you ???

TRAV:
  no, i ???
so, can we do a song?

DAD:
  like what?

TRAV:
i don't know but you wanna play trumpet

DAD:
no, i'm not good at that

TRAV:
  you wanna play keyboard?

DAD:
  yeah

TRAV:
this is dave emmitt and travis emmitt
  and dave on keyboard
and travis on the bottom half of the keyboard 'cause dave can't do any better
  and travis also on trumpet
  1 2 ready

  dad

DAD:
  come on

TRAV:
  what

DAD:
you've gotta get up and do those dishes and i've gotta...

TRAV:
  oh
do the dishes like a perfect little lady

March 9 Letter

I think I was only pretending it was March 9. Although I kept referring to that date, this appeared on the tape after some songs recorded in early April. And it doesn't sound liek the latter was recorded over the former, because it starts so perfectly: "all right, this is march 9th".

"A whole month late" implies this was recorded April 9. I had probably expected to receive the letter March 9 but ended up getting it exactly a month later. Also, the next tape starts by saying outright that it's April 9 and that I received a letter. I'm 99% certain it was the same letter. So, April 9 makes the most sense.

Lyrics to "March 9 Letter":

all right
this is march 9th
this is before i get your letter
all right?
you just gotta imagine that
before you letter arrives sometime today
i honestly think march 9th
as soon as i woke up i knew it was a lucky day
and even if your letter doesn't come then
ok gotta be quick
the keyboard's dying
it's already weak

before i get your letter
i feel i know it's your besta
you pick the perfect dates
to send your letter, your letter

you pick the perfect dates
and not in the way of boys
but maybe you do
but that's not the issue

i say you, you picked a good lucky date
march 9th
you're letter's a bit late
a whole month late

but it's, it's a lucky date

hit it

your letter's in the mail
i can sense it
maybe in the mail box

your letter's in the mail
i can sense it
and it's maybe in the mail box

Reply

This refers to Kim's letter which I received that day.

Lyrics to "Reply":

this song is entitled
let me make it up
quick quick quick
there's not much time

it's a reply to your letter
this is a reply to your letter
this is the reply

[scat]

this is a reply to your letter
this is a reply to your letter
why did it come so late
this is a reply to your letter

this is a reply to your letter
why did it come so late
the only good thing is that i had time to write a longer letter

it's 20 pages long
20 pages of scribble scrabble that you don't even read
it's 20 pages long, 20 pages long
20 pages of scribble scrabble that you don't even read

April 9 Chatter

This "proves" that the "March 9" reference was pretense. Not that it matters.

Lyrics to "April 9 Chatter":

this is april 9th
this is the day that i did receive your letter
all right
i'm just mumbling
i'm getting short on tapes as you can see
stupid songs being ??? like this
the cable for the keyboard died
so i'm using the cable to the mixer
so i'm not using the mixer
all right, that's why it sounds so stupid
ready
i hope this works

Thingamajig

The "thingamajig" was a Kalimba. I tried playing it at the same time as the keyboard. Sounds pretty horrid. Gets even worse when the cornet kicks in. Yikes.

Lyrics to "Thingamajig":

oh by the way this is the thingamajig that you mentioned in your letter

1 2 1 2 3 4

ariba

oh yeah, i love that thingamajig

Write Back Chatter

Complaining about Kim's letter writing became a frequent pasttime. The constant waiting for letters eventually inspired me to write "Maybe".

Lyrics to "Write Back Chatter":

all right
this is probably the reason that you take a month to write back
see, i can officially say a month
'cause last time it was only, what, 2 weeks, 3 weeks
yeah, i can say a month time
but, you know, i bet it will go up to year and i'll be saying
"hey, if it takes you a year to write
then it must take you a year to read the letter"
pbbt

Fake Horn

I don't think I needed to tell you that the horn sound was fake. Some of the Asian melodic ideas are ok, and the distorted bass drone is kinda cool, but overall the song is lame.

Lyrics to "Fake Horn":

here's a little ditty that i want you to hear

by the way
that wasn't me really on the french horn
that was the keyboard
so don't hide your head in emabarassment
thinking that your clarinet playing it so tacky
you probably are a lot better than me
i'm terrible on the french horn

i interrupt that, i interrupt that, i interrupt that
because it's stupid

Midnight Funk

Pretty dumb, but I like the distortion on the bass line.

I think I had reached my creative limit for the day long before this song!

Lyrics to "Midnight Funk":

this is called midnight funk

hey
1 2 3 4

you must wonder why i can go on for hours like that
did that impress you?
not a bit
that was worth nothing
that was the worst yet
ever, in all my tapes
that was the worst yet
see, like i said before, i'm minus 5 or 6 people

Thought So

Fatigued, inglorious end to a lame album.

Lyrics to "Thought So":

if i'm to -- oh

yeah, i thought so

Gross Cookin'

This improv is a sloppy, cheesy pseudo-reggae instrumental. The semi-melodic solos and occasionally unexpected chord changes try to prevent it from being a total snore-fest, but fail.

Lyrics to "Gross Cookin'":

ok
all these i'm making up
i'm just making it up ok

gross
1 2 hit it again
oh yeah
ooh
cookin

Radon Mouse

Enough about radon already! This is really dumb, saved only by the semi-funny improvised lyrics. Unfortunately, the vocal section is very muffled.

"Obstreperous" was probably a vocab word for the week. I don't remember ever using it afterwards.

Lyrics to "Radon Mouse":

this is what happens when i have radon in my brain
and it all wants to leave at once

yeah
i run around in my little house
don't be obstreperous
chill, it's only only a mouse

i run around, i run around, yeah
i run around, i run around

my mouse is big and scary
he's got 2 big fangs and is so hairy
he has 2 little feet
that was all, that's all god gave him, yeah

Mixerless

I guess I was having problems with the mixer. And the brain. Boy, this song stinks.

Lyrics to "Mixerless":

i hate the mixer
that's all i'm gonna say
so i'm not gonna use it this time

Remixerless

The first part of this was the same thing as "Mixerless", with poorer sound quality and more gum chomping. It was really sloppy and annoying. I've edited it out, leaving this improvised bit, which is more interesting.

The "percussion" solo in the middle sounds like I was dropping a pen on the keyboard. It happened to bounce rhythmically. Kinda neat.

Lyrics to "Remixerless":

and that was just some old crap, ow
yeah, now i'm gonna play that old crap right now
i'm gonna prove to you that i can do it

what do you think of that?

History Day Chatter

My dad and I were talking about my upcoming filming of a History Day project, which I'm pretty sure was "Settlement of Southern Africa".

I don't know what the "January 18th" reference is. Perhaps I was saying parts of the previous songs ("Mixerless" and "Remixerless") were written back then?

Lyrics to "History Day Chatter":

trav:
  january 18th

dad:
come get all the stuff off the table
bring it down on this table
and then film it down here with the bright lights like you did earlier

trav:
  ok
on this history day project that's due tuesday
how do we know how long to make the pictures?

dad:
  well, we'll experiment

trav:
  woodie, hi
  ok,
  goodbye

Dictaphone Demo

I was demonstrating how the speeding-up effect of the dictaphone makes my music sound cooler. I don't remember what the recorded song was.

Lyrics to "Dictaphone Demo":

i did something sneaky
so that the mixer does work now
and so does the keyboard

  [scat]
ok, you like that?

i like that kind of music, nice and laid back

no

Swing Start

This muffled swing wasn't going anywhere, so I'm not too upset that I recorded over most of it.

Lyrics to "Swing Start":

hey

Dictajamming

This multi-track jam starts off slow, muddy, and boring. It's not nearly as cool as the stuff on Five Dollar Drummer, or even earlier tapes for Kim.

However, it gets interesting towards the end, when a bluesy lyric starts up, and the background solos get wilder.

At the very end, a completely different set of music kicks in. It sounds like I wasn't prepared for it.

Lyrics to "Dictajamming":

all right, sorry to interrupt
i have 2 dictajams waiting
all right
there are dictajams
and i've got to hurry
because last time i ran out
and this is my second recording
so they're not gonna be as good as the first
first one is called dictajam part 1

  all right now
  crisis on my hands
the tape recorder speaker doesn't work
but the dictaphone is working so ???
???
  ready
ready
  this is called dictajam
all right go ahead
  hit it
hit it now go ahead

  oh boy oh boy
  oh boy oh boy

we sing about people
that's all we have time to sing about
we sing about people
that's all we seem to have time to sing about

that's all we seem to have time to sing about
that's all we have time to sing about

that's all we have time to sing about

yeah
  hey
hey, hey, hey, hey...

  hey now
  let's jam

this is dict-, oh god

this is dictajam, we're dictajamming
this is dictajam, and we're dictajamming
it's a silly name but give it a chance
you may find it a game and not romance

  one more time

hey, hey, hey, hey...
hey, hey, hey, hey...

  hey hey
  hey hey
  hey another hey
  hey gosh

i didn't say it
i didn't say that word
i didn't say it
i didn't say it
i don't

this is a dictajam, ???

hey, hey, hey, hey

hey
have you ever heard the story about the 3 wise men
that found the mouse
and picked it up and then carried it home
and tried to ??? the poor mouse a bone

but it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't drink milk
all it would do is chew their silk
??? it wouldn't chew a bone and it wouldn't drink milk
all it would do was to chew their silk

so they picked up the mouse and they took it outside
and they picked up the gun and then
blew the mouse away
blew the mouse away
blew the mouse a--

and they found the pieces and they buried them
but they didn't tell the story, what had happened to them
they just said they had an accident and one of them got shot
but he healed really quickly, that's not hot
and that he really quickly and that's not hot
and the guy really quickly and that's not hot

the next day they went outside again
and they found a little field mouse in their grave
the next day they went outside again
they found a little field mouse in their grave

they took it home
they took it home

yeah it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't drink milk
all it would do was chew their silk
it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't drink milk
all it would do was drink their silk

oh it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't chew milk
how can anything chew milk
and it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't ???
  hit it, let's dance

hey, shut up little kid
i don't want you in my band anymore
  we're jamming
oh shut up, hey
  ??? dictajam, a dictajam
oh shut up kid, i'm singing a song
might be a silly name but i really don't care
you got a ??? boy, yeah
  ???
you call yourself a boy?
  ??? a dictajam
with a puny voice
might be a silly name but i really don't care
shut up
baby, shake it over here, baby, baby, shake it over there, yeah
oh god what a pervert
  baby just move
some guys are pervs and some guys are normal
  baby just move
learn about growing up
  i'm saying baby just move
  you've gotta shake it
  hey

are you done kid
are you done talking
my turn
hey
1 2 3

no, it wouldn't chew bone and it wouldn't drink milk
all it would do is was eat their silk
  hey hey
so they took it outside and blew it away
  one more time
and there's a little red spot unto this day

and their friends came over and asked them what went
they said a little big groundhog came into our vent
so we took it outside and blew it away
so that's why the red spot is here today
singing, that's why the red spot is here today

but the captain of them couldn't tell a lie
so he told the truth about how the mouse had died
??? jesus

Shout for More

One track of vocals it tough enough to stomach. Two is just nuts. Fortunately, the music has lots of energy. Sloppy energy, but energy nevertheless. The last part is sped up, and ups the energy even more.

Lyrics to "Shout for More":

hello
  hey shut up
i will help sing a song
  sure i will
and it would be good
  yeah
and ??? we're gonna run
  uh-huh

it's fast
  real fast
i'll pick you up off the ground
it will pick you up when you're feeling down

it will pick you up off the ground
it will pick you up if you're feeling down

Dull Roar

This muffled excerpt sounds like the end of a song that I recorded over. I don't know when it was recorded, or why I clobbered it.
