Notes

These are songs which were originally recorded as videos.

At some point I might make the actual videos available, but for now you'll have to content yourself with the audio.

The title is a pun on a video rental store that I used to frequent.

Songs

Blanche Mold Jam

This is a sloppy piano improv from a home video, with TV, talking, and kitchen noises in the background.

Candlelit

This was on a home video, right after my play "Candlelighting", which I recorded with my parents. During this clip, I was piddling around the house with some pre-recorded casio music playing in the background.

At the end of the clip, I started "interviewing" my dad.

Lyrics to "Candlelit":

trav: ??? not

dad: what are you recording

trav: i'm not

dad: yes it is

trav: it's recording now?

dad: ???

trav: then it must have been left on

trav: ???
      the sign fell

dad: well there's no
      are you dubbing?

trav: i've got to interview you

dad: no

trav: i want an interview
      ready?

dad: no

trav: that's you're name, right?
      say correct

dad: yes

trav: do you accept the responsibility and the shame of being associated with
      one travis emmitt

dad: no

trav: producer of candlelighting

dad: no

trav: well, guess who's right behind your shoulder

Jean Jacket Guitar

This was a bad guitar improv that I recorded on home video. It cuts off at the end. Thankfully.

Dubbed Music Video

This was my first attempt at making a music video. The video part was mostly me playing the keyboard and french horn, but then occasionally I walked around and showed different objects to the camera. The audio track was completely dubbed, and was a song I had recorded earlier.

I'm not sure if the audio was recorded (via tape recorder) at the same time as the video and then dubbed back on later, or if the videoed performance was lost forever. Tears streaming down my face at the thought.

Lyrics to "Dubbed Music Video":

cut

Video Medley

This was a live keyboard medley I recorded on video. I was sitting in the dining room, with my back to the camera.

The songs were: "Red Joy", "Grapejuice" "Doltish Sonnet", and "Just Stupid".

The performance was pretty sloppy, and the audio cuts out in places, but otherwise this is pretty much par for the time period.

Lyrics to "Video Medley":

1 2 3 4

[red joy]

there is one kind of person that i despise
she has red joy in her eyes
there is one kind of person that i can hate
she has that red joy look across her face

she had started by killing her mother
got carried away, had to commit another
  commit another

  that's why she
that's why her name is red joy, red joy, red joy
red joy, red joy, red joy

[grapejuice]

my shoes have grapejuice on them
there's a puddle of it on the floor
  mother is screaming bloody murder
and then she points to the door

hey didn't you know hey didn't you know
hey didn't you know grapejuice stains the carpet
  carpet carpet carp carp carpet

let's start this one over again

my shoes have grapejuice on them
there's a puddle of it on the floor
  mother is screaming bloody murder
and then she points to the door

  hey didn't you know
hey didn't you know that grapejuice stains carpet
  hey didn't you know
hey didn't you know that grapejuice stains carpet

dad comes home i'm still outside
i'm too cold to talk and about to cry
hey you better learn how to grow up
  hey you better loon soon

  about to cry

he goes inside and leaves me here
he greets my mom with "honey dear"

  hey hey
  what's he doing
  what's he doing
  out there on the porch
  out there on the porch

  hey hey
  what's he doing
  what's he doing
out there out there on the porch

  actually that's my mom's voice
  well

what shall i do? i feel a breeze
without a coat i'm here to freeze

hey, you should've thought of that earlier boy
  you're in for a surprise
  surprise surprise
  oh dry your eyes

  i try the door
  it's locked, oh no
  forecasters call
  for 5 feet of snow

  oh my god
hey now, they're not always right, are they?

  about to cry

  my tears are ice
  my hands are dead
  my fingers have lost
  their healthy red

  hey tough break kiddo
tough break kiddo tough break kiddo
  tough

  dad opens the door
  so i rush in
  i clean up the mess
  and i am forgiven

  i clean up the mess
  so i am forgiven

we though we had it made
our hands were on the blade
  the enemy were dismayed
and behind us in the distance a mother's children played

  our tactics you'd admire
  our forces you'd desire
  our purpose you'd inquire
and we'd answer there's only one: to control the whole empire
  to control the whole empire
  to control the whole empire

  and then we entered battle
on foot and in our saddle
  behind us all our cattle
far away behind the cattle a baby shook his rattle

but in the end we failed
  our valiants retreated frailed
  their faces bloodless and paled
and somewhere in the distance a lonely child wailed

  waa waa waa waa waa

[just stupid]

  a 1 a 1 2 3

fat cat sitting on the window sill
she topples over, falls off, and stays still
skinny dog lying on the front porch steps
breathing really slowly like the last will be next
jessica dancing at the top of the stairs
suddenly she slips and falls unaware

  of the danger
  the danger of being clutzy
  lazy or just plain ugly

travis tries to strum a tune
on the guitar he got from who knows whom
mother is shutting the door to his room
when all of a sudden down falls the moon

  with the danger
  the danger of being clutzy
  lazy or just plain ugly

the world is not a perfect place
  especially for the human race

  this is awful

Slouch

I recorded this piano improv for a home video. I was slouching when I played it. It's pretty bad.

Lyrics to "Slouch":

i'm going to subject you to some awful awful awful happenings
i gotta slouch in order to be seen
i don't have anything to play so i'm gonna wing it

oh yeah

allright i'll play for real
i gotta slouch
ok trust me
i don't usually play like this

see if it doesn't sound good
it's because of the microphone
and your inability to assimilate
all the fancy chords i'm playing

Ferry Eve

I recorded this piano improv (which was a video) in a practice room in Bellingham on the day before hopping on the ferry to head up to Alaska. It's not too horrible. I guess I was in a good mood.

Ferry Eve Coda

More piano noodling in Bellingham. Doesn't really work.

Someone Stole My Camera

I recorded this guitar-based song shortly after getting my video camera back after it had been stolen on a school hike. I recorded it with the camera itself.

Lyrics to "Someone Stole My Camera":

someone stole my camera
but that's ok
someone stole my camera
but i got it back today

someone stole my memories
but that's ok
someone stole my memories
but i got them back today

i got them back today

yeah right

you'll be amazed by the amount of sound
that can come out of one string

someone stole my camera
but i got it back today

Very Much Enjoyed

This was a short guitar improv I recorded for Jess on my video camera.

Lyrics to "Very Much Enjoyed":

hi jess
this is monday night
just a brief hello

anyway
i very much enjoyed
here i'll put on some background music

i very much enjoyed
visiting you at your school
what am i saying
you're not at school i am

i very much enjoyed
listening to you play your tunes
what am i talking about
i must be flying

i very much enjoyed
spending the week with you
what am i talking about
i spent it with my books

i very much enjoyed
spending the week with you

don't you like brotherly communication

Post-Joy Noodle

This was simple guitar noodling I recorded after "Very Much Enjoyed" (on the video for Jess).

Ok

Silly improv on guitar, recorded on the video for Jess.

Lyrics to "Ok":

ok
i'll think of something to say
ok
i'll think of something to say

o
i'll

i can't play loud
'cause all my suitemates are asleep
otherwise i'll just blow the house down man

You Might Think

This starts off as a really bad guitar improv and then turns into a minorly bad guitar groove,

Lyrics to "You Might Think":

isn't that entertainment at its finest
you don't think so
well how about this

come one
stop wasting our time

that's not true

you might think that i'm wasting your time
but i'm not

you might think that i'm wasting my time
but i'm certainly not

you might think that i'm wasting my life
but i'm not

you might think that i don't have a life
but i do

i know that's pitiful
but at least i can sing better that you

[scat]

all right
i have to go to school
bye bye

Fairbanking

I recorded this piano improv on video in a practice room at the university in Fairbanks, AK. It was extremely cold outside. In the middle of the improv I stop and comment about the cold.

Lyrics to "Fairbanking":

ewww
ewww
the microphone's busted
i wonder if it's permanent or not
oh well
too much cold i guess

all clumbsiness is due solely to the cold

Videothon

First came "Marathon" (the piano track, recorded in Bellingham). Then came "Days Like These" (the first vocal track, recorded while driving on the Kenai Peninsula). And now we have the third and final track: vocals recorded while driving in the Yukon.

For simplicity, the lyrics listed below are the second layer of vocals only.

Lyrics to "Videothon ":

[scat]

the kenai river is blue blue green
the kenai river is blue blue green

[scat]

the kenai river is blue blue green
the kenai river is blue blue green

[scat]

anyway that's 3 tracks of audio man
heh heh heh
this is called the poor traveling man's recording studio
the piano was recorded in bellingham
the first set of vocals was recorded on the way to homer
and then of course right now it's recorded in canada
it's a music video too

[scat]

Videothon 2

This is the second, faster part of "Videothon". I've separated it from the first because the tempo change and the fact that the background vocals contain a little profanity.

For simplicity, the lyrics listed below are the second layer of vocals only.

Lyrics to "Videothon 2":

[scat]

??? getting to the end of the tape
??? getting to the end of the tape

gotta get to gotta get to gotta get to the end of the tape
gotta get to gotta get to gotta get to the end of the tape
gotta get to gotta get to gotta get to the end of the tape
gotta get to gotta get to gotta get to the end of the tape

[repeat]

Xmas Noodles

This is from a video of me noodling on piano while my family (and the TV) talked in the background. My one contribution to the conversation was to ask whether the stores were open, for some last-minute Christmas shopping.

Lyrics to "Xmas Noodles":

jess: ??? still there?
??? see all the presents ??? go ???
      ??? kinda goes ???
      ??? what

mom: ???

jess: yes it is

mom: ???

jess: ???

mom: ??? and all their other activities ???

jess: see this is much more condusive to an indoor space than to a hula hoop
     ??? right here

mom: well miss jessica
     are you ready to go

trav: you think the stores will be open today?

mom: oh yes

jess: yes, it would be ridiculous

mom: travis was at the mall yesterday at fashion square
     boy

jess: ???

Mandolin Serenade

This was a mandolin serenade that I captured on video.

Lyrics to "Mandolin Serenade":

giovanna: denali's gonna perform a roll

trav: i'm the rock she's the roll
      ???

Childlike Serenade

More serenading on mandolin. This one doesn't sound improvised.

Lyrics to "Childlike Serenade":

want something more childlike?

yay

We Have To

I recorded this guitar and vocal improv on video. The lyrics are about parental responsibilities.

Lyrics to "We Have To":

trav:
  we have to encourage her
we have to even if it results in repeated failure
we have to pretend she's close to the desk
  even if she's not

  we have to encourage her
??? little bit of hurting though she's not hurting
we have to say yes more than no
  'cause she's slow

we have to encourage her to be around art
and make her own special artistic augmentations
we pretend that it increases the value of the picture
  not that it ???

  we pretend she's a little ??? drummer
??? something that's catchy and sellible
  and then one day
she'll upgrade to tupperware and gymnastics

  more like electronics
  and probably photography

giovanna: say bye

trav: bye bye

giovanna: bye

Mount Cook Piano

We were exploring a hotel at Mount Cook Village and I found a piano. I recorded this quiet improv on video.

Potty Request

I don't often get requests. This one was captured on video.

Lyrics to "Potty Request":

let's sing about the potty song
about going in the potty
that one that you were singing earlier was so amazing
was superlative

Potty Song

This was a short, pre-written song about toilet training, captured on video.

Lyrics to "Potty Song":

all right this is like take 10

poopie poopie poopie in the potty
no more diaper duty for mommy
you've got to poopie poopie poopie in the potty
listen to your mommy; don't be mommy

every time you poo
you can see what passes through

poopie poopie poopie in the potty
yes i'm talking to you denali
you've got to poopie poopie poopie in the potty
no more stinky diapers for daddy

ooh
p u
who
little poopie oobie ooie you

that stunk

North Road

Another acoustic guitar improv, captured on video.

I had to censor this. Sorry!

Lyrics to "North Road":
