Notes

In 1986 I got my first keyboard, which was a Casio CT-310. It had preset rhythms and accompaniments, so it acted as a rudimentary "band in a box". This let me finally combine my vocals and music.

Most of these songs were (apparently) recorded in a single day (1986-09-10) shortly after I got the keyboard. Looking back, I see that that was a Wednesday. That's a lot of work for a school night! However, there's not much quality control (as you can hear), so it's definitely feasible that I recorded these in a couple hours.

The album title is a pun on the first song ("I Beat Her"). I keep trying to think of a double meaning, but my mind's drawing a blank.

The photo on the back cover is my Dad playing the Casio CT-310. I don't have any pictures of myself playing musical instruments from this time period. The dorky photo of me on the front will have to suffice. :)

Songs

I Beat Her

This is the first recording I have of myself on my Casio CT-310. I recorded it in the summer of 1986, when I was 13. My cousin might have earlier recordings (which I mailed to her), but until I hear them again, they don't count.

I was sick of other boys my age always bragging about how awesome they were. So I made fun of them by pretending to brag about beating my sister in basketball. This is a joke, because Jessica was 3 years younger (10) and almost never played basketball. My song jokes about her having her "hands tied behind her back" while I beat her. Yeah! Go, me! I'm awesome!

Seriously, it's neat to see glimpses of subtle, insightful humor at that age. I certainly was a clever little kid. Yeah! Go, me! I am the greatest!!!

;)

Lyrics to "I Beat Her":

i beat her, with her hands behind her back
i beat her, with her hands behind her back
i beat her, fair and square, i beat her
oh yes i beat her

uh-huh that's right, yes, i, yes, i beat her
beat her, beat her, beat her, beat her, beat her

beat her, yes i beat her
oh i beat her, yes i beat her
with her hands behind her back, i beat her
oh with her hands behind her back, i beat her

tied behind her back, behind her back, behind her back
fair and square, i beat her, oh yes i beat her
really fair, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, i beat her

oh yes, have you ever beaten somebody as good as her?
no you haven't, no you haven't
have you ever beaten somebody as good as her?
no you haven't, no you haven't

she's the best, i was the best,
now i am the worst; that doesn't make any sense
ha ha! oh yes, we're jammin'

she is the best but now i am
she is the best but now i am
she was good, she was so good
but now i am the best best best best
best best best best
best best best best
best best best best

oh yes i beat her
with her hands behind her back, oh yes, i beat her
and that's the best i can do, really
it is, truly
i mean, i beat her, oh yes i beat her
oh yeah i beater

yay, i won!

Life of a Basketball Champ

This is the self-mocking sequel to "I Beat Her". It uses a simple blues progression, and has some improvised bits.

This is the first song that uses a fake British accent. Yum. The funny thing is that I was affecting the "-a" suffix five years before I ever heard The Fall, who ended up becoming one of my favorite bands of all time!

Lyrics to "Life of a Basketball Champ":

a 1, a 2, a 1 2 3 hit it
2, 3, 4

life of a basketball champ, champ
life of a basketball champ, champ
life of a basketball champ, champ
life of a basketball champ, woo!

i don't ever madden and stomp
'cause i'm in the life of a basketball champ, champ
life of a basketball champ, champ

i don't ever madden and stomp
life of a basketball champ

champ, champ
like pac-man!

life of a basketball champ
life of a basketball champ
life of a basketball champ

life of a basketball-a champ, a ball-a-champ
life of a basketball-a champ, ahh
life of a basketball-a champ, ahh
life of a basketball-a champ

life of a basketball
life of a basketball
life of a basketball champ champ champ
of a champ, of a champ, of a champ, champ
of a champ, of a champ, of a champ

i might mope and i might cry
i might pout and i might die
'cause i'm in the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ
life of a basketball-a champ, champ
life of a basketball-a champ, woo!

life of a basketball-a champ
life of a basketball-a champ

a life of a basketball, woo!
the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a-champ

the life of a basketball
life of a basketball
life of a basketball-a champ, a champ

the life of a basketball
life of a basketball
life of a basketball-a champ

the life of a basketball-a champ
the life
the life of a basketball-a champ

i might mope and i might die
i might pout and i might cry
'cause i'm in the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ
the life of a basketball-a champ, like pac-man
the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ
the life of a basketball-a champ, like pac-man

life of a basketball
life of a basketball
life of a basketball
life of a basketball

life is a basketball
life is a basketball
oh life is a basketball and a net
life is a basketball and a net, and a net

oh yeah, no other sport will do
only basketballs
life is a basketball and a net
not a tennis racket
not a soccer ball
not a golf ball
not a baseball
not a baseball mitt
or a bat

life of a basketball champ, a-ball-a champ

life is a baseball
well, that'll come up next week
'cause i don't have anything more to say
no really, i don't
but, let's end with this

oh yes
a life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ
life of a basketball is wonderful tonight
like pac-mac!

Play the Game

This is a probably my first anti-conformity song. I didn't feel like conforming the vocals. They gradually get weirder and weirder.

Lyrics to "Play the Game":

1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4

do you know what it's like living in a world
that world is filled with people, boys and girls
they'll laugh and tease you, call you silly names
you'll think you'll never quite be the same

oh play the game
it will treat you sane
oh play the game

do you know what it's like living in a world, that
that world is filled with people, boys and girls, ah-ha
they laugh and tease you, call you silly names, ah-ha
you'll never think you'll quite be the same

oh play the game
it will treat you sane
oh play the game

do you know what it's like living in a world
that world is filled with people, boys and girls
they laugh and tease you, call you silly names
you'll never think you'll quite be the same

oh, oh, oh play the game
it will treat you sane
oh play the game

do you know what it's like living in a world
that world is filled with people, boys and girls
they'll laugh and tease you, call you silly names
you'll think you never quite be the same

oh play the game
it will treat you sane
oh play the game

Tequila

This is my sloppy cover of The Champs' "Tequila", which was popular at the time. Yikes.

Note: Since this is copyrighted material, I'll hold off on uploading the mp3. Not that it really matters, given the quality of my performance.

Fight Song

Here's another awful cover, this time of UVa's "fight song".

Note: This song might actually be public domain; I've heard it used by other teams as well. So, I'll upload the mp3 and if I get complaints I'll take it down. No big loss if that happens.

Latin Instrumental

This is a latin improv. Basically, I was just messing around with the "latin" preset rhythms. The clunky, obvious-sounding chord progression is blues-based, which about as fancy as I got back then.

Blast Your Ears Out

I was experimenting with different recording techniques. I added live clapping and tested different volume levels. I guess I was already probing the limits of my keyboard and recording equipment.

Lyrics to "Blast Your Ears Out":

oh yeah

woo-hoo!
yes, we're jammin'
yes, oh this is cool

you want it louder, folks
you got it
blast your ears out

that too much?

is that enough for you?
i suppose it is
i'm gonna play normal now
it's a little bit muted
but listen to the bass
yeah, all right

[scat]

who says, who says
we say, uh-huh, we are the band

Loudness Test

Here's another volume test. It's really distorted, but mercifully short.

Lyrics to "Loudness Test":

you think that's the loudest we can get?
well, you are wrong
you want to hear loud?
listen to this

Thank You

Silly intro to the next song.

Lyrics to "Thank You":

thank you guys out there so much
for listening to our basketball soundtrack
it really stinks but you have to keep on listening to it

this one is a really nutty song
i mean, of course, it's dedicated to you guys out there
because it stinks so much

Warm Up

Clunky intro to the long demo. Guaranteed to try your patience.

Lyrics to "Warm Up":

yes, that's the tribute
i mean, it's a good old --

little ditty here
it's not much of a ditty anymore
i mean more like --

that's just proof that i played that ???

and it can otherwise be refered as this
???

yes, we've got a lot of ???

we have a drum section practicing in the background
you can't hear them; i'll turn them up
hey boys play a bit louder

Long Demo

This is a long demonstration of my keyboard. Guaranteed to fry your patience.

Lyrics to "Long Demo":

[i'll try to add these later]

T's Reggae

This is probably my first semi-original chord progression. It's not reggae, though, despite the Jamaica and Marley references. Nope, not by a long shot.

Note: I'll probably have to censor this before uploading the mp3.

Lyrics to "T's Reggae":

ok last song
you better enjoy it
it's called
wait
this is called "t's reggae"
and i really hope you like it
of course my name is travis emmitt
no middle name
i live on ...
charlottesville, virginia, 22901, usa
1986 a.d. is when i recorded it
and the time is 8:38
yeah and the 10th of september
1986 a.d. of course
charlottesville, virginia
you know where that is
usa, earth, milky way
i have contact lenses which are really bothering me right now
[???] as soon as i get done with the song [???]

but anyways, t's reggae
one
hit it

all right

i was saying
i live on the beach in jamaica
lots of pretty women back there
the caribbean, bahamas
all those places
virgin islans, whoo
yes i lived back there
once upon a day
and i met a man
he's now dead
his name's bob marley
he grew up to be famous
i mean, i wish i did
maybe i didn't have the talent
but i do now

and i lived in the united states
yes i do
and i make music
poor bob marley died at a miami hospital in 1981
??? rastafarian
this is dedicated to him

ULS

This was my first attempt at creating an "epic" song. It's an instrumental, combining several music ideas that I had developed in the past few days/weeks. It's much more disciplined than the earlier stuff, and cleanly recorded; I think I was using line-in instead of a microphone. However, I think it's ultimately kinda boring.

The name means "unidentified love song".

I recorded it sometime after 1986-09-10 and before the 1987-03-16. Since the next song is called "T's Reggae 2", I'm guessing that I recorded it (and hence "ULS") shortly after "T's Reggae", which was 1986-09-10. That's why I'm guessing the date is 1986 rather than 1987.

Getting the dates right is very important to me.

In fact, getting the dates right is more important than getting the notes right.

That kinda sums up the Trex philosophy. :)

T's Reggae 2

This is the long sequel to "T's Reggae". It also contains bits of the "Fight Song". Not that we needed to hear any of that again. And it has a "Long Demo"-esque feel, where I do more fiddling than playing. It's pretty bad.

Hmm, "pretty bad"?

More like "ugly bad".

It kinda reminds me of some of the really awful drum-and-bass tracks I've heard on late night radio. So there might be a market for this racket somewhere. I just don't want to have anything to do with that racket market.

Hmm. Racket market. Interesting phrase. I guess something good came out of this song after all! It just took about 20 years.

Lyrics to "T's Reggae 2":

yes
all right now i have here "slow rock"
and i'm gonna play us a tune that is pretty famously known as "t's reggae"

what you hear in the background is the other side of the studio
with of course ??? call me al
paul simon back there
well, this is travis emmitt
i'm not that known, well known

but i'm playing a song called "t's reggae 2"
it's the second version of the original "t's reggae"
which was on the opposite side of this soundtrack
and this one is a little bit different
but ???

yes, it has the same keyboards
i can also get a lot lower on this one
here we go

yeah
and of course we've got the ???

yeah
well, anyways, i'm playing "t's reggae" right here
anyways
t's reggae
hit it

this, this version really stinks
i'm gonna speed things up a bit
it's really slow right now

Another Casio Improv

More hyper drum-and-bass junk, with repetition, distortion, and not much else. Well, at least it's short.
