Notes

I had a little "disagreement" with my girlfriend. To try to make myself feel better, I jogged to the nearby college and found a practice piano. I then jammed for an hour or so, recording most of it. These tracks are all from that session.

Songs

Sniff Sniff Sigh

I was sniffing because I had a cold (which you can probably tell by my singing on the next few tracks).

Lyrics to "Sniff Sniff Sigh":

sniff sniff sigh
sniff sniff sigh
1 2
sniff sniff sigh
sniff sniff sigh

Oh No (part 1)

This song represents the manic-depressive state which follows an argument with a loved one. It's one continuous improv with lots of jamming and profanity. I've split it into multiple parts to isolate the worst profanity.

My voice was low that day because I had a cold. Sexy, huh?

Anyway, I like the gentle sentiment. And the chugging trancy part, which represents getting back on your feet... Some of the solos aren't bad either.

The second vocal section crumbles, though. I sort of fall back on profanity and self-reference.

Lyrics to "Oh No (part 1)":

oh no it happened again
i got in a fight with my best friend

oh no it happened again
she left me angry this morning

oh no it happened again
i said something wrong without thinking

i didn't mean any harm
but i never do
can you say the same thing about you?

oh no it happened again
i got in a fight with my best friend

now i don't know what i can do
i don't know which way to turn
on this saturday

oh no it happened again
f---ed up on the piano in the practice room

oh no it happened again
wasting tape in the practice room

uninspired again
i'm uninspired again
my fire is out
my fingers are sucking
keep on f---ing up

oh no it happened again
i've strayed away from perfection

oh no it happened again
my fingers lost the rhythm

oh no it happened again
voice it lost the melody
voice it lost the melody
i'm not perfect

but at least i try

Oh No (part 2)

For this part, I lapsed into a manic but not particularly effective jam. It's an almost masochistic endurance test. Yikes.

The vocal section is funny but kinda slow. The improv after it is heartfelt but sloppy and descends into chaos. Yeah, I know, lots of "x but y". This song is far from perfect, but it has some nice bits. Just like me! I hope.

After that comes another vocal section, which is full of profanity and very dark. So is the instrumental section after it.

Lyrics to "Oh No (part 2)":

oh no it happened again
my ear is suffering from distortion

oh no it happened again
i'm getting fatigued and i'm starting to yawn

oh no it happened again
but this time i think i have a solution
it's called an ear plug

oh no it happened again
putting in the ear plug and it's taking a while to expand
but it will expand
and that is the time that i'll begin to pound on the keys
that is the time that you count yourself lucky
oh f--- it i'll just improvise

oh no it happened again
i can't hear myself singing with an earplug in my ear
but that's okay
oh god

oh no it happened again
f---ing up at the piano

every f---ing time i sit down in this room
every f---ing time i turn on the tape recorder i f--- up
every f---ing time i sit down to play i f--- up
every single time i am my own audience i f--- up

i f--- up
i f--- up

i f--- up
i f--- up
i f--- up
i f--- up

i'm a f--- up
i'm not ???
i'm not ???
i'm not ???
i'm not ???

and i feel that i might
i feel that i might

i'm not ???
i'm not ???
and i feel that i had might
i feel that i had might
i ???
i must've ???

cold crap

Oh No (part 3)

This final section is completely different. My voice is very low. It almost sounds like throat singing.

The rest of the track is weird. Very long and weird.

Lyrics to "Oh No (part 3)":

this is more like

pedal on the piano sounds a little bit like this
pedal on the piano sounds a little bit like this
  [repeat many times]

oops
i made a mistake but the devil made me do it
i made a mistake but the devil made me do it
i made a mistake but the devil made
i made a devil but... f---

pedal on the piano ???
blaa blaa blaa blaa...

everybody wants to fit you in the rhythm
everybody wants you to be part of their routine
everybody comes to greet you
everybody wants you in their routine

everybody wants you in the rhythm
everybody wants you to be part of their routine
everybody wants you in the rhythm
in their dreams, in their money, in their pocket, in the cage

then the dark times come and people push away
the dark times come and they push them right away
the dark times come and they all scream and nasty
they're nasty, they're nasty, they're nasty, they push you away

and sometimes, sometimes, sometimes, sometimes
sometimes, sometimes, sometimes, you feel
the anger is growing
the tension is growing
the ??? is growing
the ??? is growing, is growing, is growing
the tension is growing and growing and growing
the anger is growing and growing and growing
the anger is growing and growing and growing

so what do you do to wash away the ???
what do you do to the people little boy?
what do you do, do you go hide and sleep?
what do you do, do you go exercise

do you make up a song
do you go outside
do you be by yourself
do you write in a journal

or do you hit somebody
do you call them a whore
do you beat somebody up
do you give them wrong medicine

that's what it all is
it's all wrong medicine
that's what it all is
it's all wrong medicine
that's what it all is
it's all wrong medicine
that's what it all is
it's all wrong medicine

that's what it all is
it has good intentions but
it's all wrong
it's all wrong medicine
that's all wrong
there's lots of medicine
that's all wrong
there's lots of medicine

gotta read the label
gotta think a little bit
gotta think a little bit
gotta read the label

gotta be careful
gotta be paranoid
gotta be paranoid
gotta be paranoid
gotta be anal
gotta be nitpicky
gotta be like travis
gotta be like travis

if everyone's like travis, then everyone is happy, right?
if everyone is travis, then everyone is happy, right?
mmm, yeah, well not at night
'cause if everyone is like travis, then everyone's alone

ok i f---ed up and prayed the wrong note
i said prayed instead of played
is that a freudian slip
i don't give a s---
that's what i have to say
that i don't give a s---
about freudian slips
or saying things like pray or play
just f--- it

and if everyone's alone
no one can have babies
if everyone's alone
no one gets an audience
and if everyone's alone
no one makes the tape recorders
no one makes the computers

or the notebooks
or the pianos
or the chairs
or the buildings
or the books
or the paper
or the watchtower
or the stairs
or the wires

anything, anything, anything

so people can't always be alone
all the people can't always be alone
people can't always be alone
people can't always be alone

which brings me back to my original story
which brings me back to the original ???
which brings me back to the other story
which is in a totally different key
and when i hit it you're gonna get surprised in a little bit, sure
but that's what life is
it's a bunch of changes
and some are sudden
and some are sudden
and some are sudden

but others you can anticipate
especially if you listen
learn to communicate
especially if you listen
you've got to try
especially if you listen
that's the key
you've gotta listen

gotta listen, gotta listen
got, gotta listen
don't just talk
gotta open your ears

listen to what they say
they ???, they do
how they react to certain stimuli
certain behaviors on my part and their part
and other people's part

see what happens
study, examine
do it, and analyze
do everything like that
eventually you come to some conclusion
and if your music ??? not bad notes
and that's okay
even bad notes are okay
because it's all over
at the end of the day
at the end of the day
at the end of the day

f--- the bad notes
ew
are there bad notes
what are bad notes

i can play the bad notes again
but they're gonna sound weird
they're gonna sound weird
but i'll play them again
here they go

bad notes
here are the bad notes
let's look at the bad notes
here are the bad notes
here come the bad notes
here come the bad moments
here come the bad moments
here come the bad moments
here come the bad moments

no matter how you try to keep it organized
someone's always gonna come f--- up your plans
someone's always gonna react to something
in a ??? destructive way
it's just a bad note that i played
but there's this overreation
that f---s everything up
it's a sabotage
it's a constant destructiveness
and i think the idea is to destroy
that which, which represents orders
'cause by doing that you make your own chaotic life seem more normal
destroy the order
destroy the thing that represents perfection
break it, break it
because then your own life doesn't look so bad

hurt the good guy
hurt the hero
hurt the good guy
kill the hero

losers put glue on the winners' shoes
they ???
tell people ???
they tell them to stop writing, stop playing songs
and to conform
and to be a loser too
they want me to be a loser
they want me to be like ???

try so hard to tell them ???
???
keeps on trying
should be organized
???
it's not a matter of temptations
it's a matter of trying to disrupt the routine
??? forces ???
??? open to suggestions
he is ???
he is ???

so perfect he plays every note correctly
???
says everything
people try to drag him down
they pull on him ???
when it becomes like this
???
he has a bad day
and he can't pull off a practical joke
'cause he just ???
and he can't say correct things ???
which brings us back to what i just said
which ???

i got in a fight with my best friend

today's harmony is just not in the cards
someday, someday ???
somedays the piano ??? just too hard
someday even the jogging doesn't even ???
smoothe ??? flow smoothly

i got in a fight with my best friend
i hope it doesn't happen again
and if it will
she'll pout
she'll be still
it happens all the time
and i'm not perfect either
witness this attempt at being witty
and entertaining
i can't sing so i don't try
i can't do it but i won't cry
i'll just pretend that i don't care
am i pretending
reality finds it way here

24 hours
she's gonna start a 24 hour shift
not got off until 9 pm tomorrow night
and then the following day
she just found out about a job
and if it works well for her, great
and if it doesn't, she's gonna be a whole lot of stress
24 hours cooped up in the h house
the s.s.h.

is she gonna call me
'cause i'm not gonna call her
gonna wait for her to act more mature
gonna wait for her to reach out to me
gonna wait for her to surrender her dignity
at least regain her dignity
she's gotta her dignity
she's gotta find maturity
she's gotta find some strength in her
she's gotta find some willingness
to attempt to put forth energy
to accept that not everything is gonna be perfect
but to keep on f---ing trying
trying and trying and trying and ??? trying

i got in a fight with my best friend
but i know it's only temporary
i know that if ???

my best friend got in a fight with me
i know it's only temporary
i know that repetition and trying are key

we got in a fight today
but i'll find a way
to work it out

i'll find us victory
and shatter her doubts
'cause that's what i do best

Just a Mess

The second side of the tape continues with more deep voice and moody music. I tried to give it more focus this time.

The chord changes are kinda cool once the song gets going. I think they're based on "C Cm F Fm", which I had started in 2001.

Lyrics to "Just a Mess":

i'm gonna tell you a song about a boy who can't play anything
i'm gonna tell you a song about a boy who has nothing in his head
i'm gonna tell you a song that can only be about 10 minutes long
i'm gonna tell you a song 'cause then i gotta go meet at the chemistry building

i'm gonna tell you a song that's not gonna be very long
the notes are not gonna be very good
the lyrics are gonna be way too loud
or i should say the vocals
because there aren't really any lyrics
it's not like i'm writing this
there's vocals, there's vocals, there's vocals
just vocals, just vocals, just
oh god
days like this
i should be kept away from musical instruments
because if you're not inspired
nothing happens that is pleasing to the ear
it's just a mess
just a mess
just a mess

that note doesn't work very well
ugh
that's a note by the way
just imagine you hear a b
b b b b

Nucleus

The lyrics and music are gently amusing and almost pretty. The antisocial sentiment might be a turn-off to some, but I think it's funny.

Lyrics to "Nucleus":

there's a little boy who walked through the forest
and he loved looking at the trees
and the trees they looked back at him
but he didn't see them through the leaves

not all the trees paid attention to him
most just kinda of did their thing
which involved staring at their roots
staring at the sky

it's like the earth is the past and the sky is the future
travis is the present; we all look at him
the trees need to pay attention to travis
if they're gonna get entertainment today

so all the trees turned to look at travis as he played a wrong note
but that's ok because travis is forgivible
he plays and he sings really crappily
but that's ok because because even mistakes with him are livable

and then the dead salmon slid down the stream
their bodies decayed for two months
and travis' nostrils thanked the rain
and the world thanked travis' brain

travis' brain was bigger than anything that day
travis' brain just had to have its way
everything aligned itself to travis' wishes
'cause travis does his own dishes

ok so humor is not his forte
but remember he's forgivable every day
travis is forgivable
because his mistakes are livable and he knows it

the forest creatures tried to look at travis as he passed them
as usual he was jogging and reading
the moth on the trees twitched as he moved by
but of course he didn't notice it because

the nucleus sees nothing but itself
like a black hole all thought is pulled towards the middle
the nucleus sees nothing of the world
except when the world comes into contact with it

the creatures and the moths were too far away
and so are most people - too far away
and the uglies that travis doesn't go towards them
he doesn't and he's gotta play now because he's getting self-conscious

i should have left 16 seconds ago he says to himself
in the basement of building where he doesn't belong
playing the same repetitive chords
of a half-baked song

yet he is amused, yet he is happy
making fun of himself
this is the life of travis
the life of the country mouse

ok last, last cycle

as travis slipped through the trees
the world and him disregarding eachother urgently
something snapped and he tripped and he fell
and suddenly he was plunged into a green, furry hell

the furry hell was named, um, bubba
and bubba was a piece of moss that could walk
bubba looked at travis and said
"hey i didn't know you could exist

a person who can read and run
who is a nucleus unto himself
who doesn't need anybody
but who seems to be ok anyway

you're not too clear"
bubba said to travis
but unfortunately travis ignored bubba, stepped on him,
and kicked him into the stream
where the rotten salmon mingled with bubba's twisty curly flesh
and bubba stank forever
bubba died, shriveled up, dead
and meanwhile, travis just kept on jogging
his knee slightly scuffled from the fall
