Subject: Island/Cope split
Basically Island dumped him (probably getting too wierd for
them). Last I heard he was claiming that 20 labels had
expressed an interest in signing him. Island must need their
heads examining since he can pack the T&C 4 nights solid.
Mind you the majors are currently having problems with any acts
that don't sell in the States, and (sorry folks but) he's not
mainstream enough for most folks there.
                        Cheers, RobJ

I agree: Cope isn't anything here in the States. I think he's been on MTV
a couple times, but I've never seen him. I've never heard him on the radio,
except when I play him or someone else cool plays him on college radio. Only
once actually have I heard him played on our station.
It's a shame that grunge is more popular here than any of the awesome british
bands: echo, cope, chameleons, etc... All the good bands get ignored. I think
americans are heavily video-dependent. Basically, if it's not on MTV, it
doesn't exist.

you think americans have inexplicable taste! go and visit rec.music.info
and see what kind of garbage makes its way to the top of the british charts.

Yeah, I heard that Island also told Cope tat he was too old
to appeal to the record buying masses!!
But lets face it, Cope does not shift a lot of units here even.
But this is more of a reflection on the label than Cope, they have never
pushed Cope and never marketed him in any manner.
Island were too busy with the big fish, U2, Bryan Ferry, Bob Marley,
and now Take That (*UGH*) to worry about Cope. Personally, I'm surprised
he lasted this long with Island. Of course, it is a formality before
he chooses one of the plethora of Independent labels chasing.
An artist like Cope sells enough records to make or break most
of the British indie labels.
Also, does anyone have any backgrund on how the Teardrops were
formed, how they knew each other etc!!!

This is my best guess at Fear loves.., corrections welcomed.
Fear Loves this Place
---------------------
So a man struck a woman again
and a veil descended from above,
the reasons they cried out
but it was no time for crying,
it was the shaking of the world.
CHORUS:
We're living one hell of a heaven,
Deliver this world at one take.
You hear me crying out, yeah yeah I'm praying
Fear loves this place.
Sheer determination, I walk those miles,
pitiful, microscopic nobody.
Woman, even the night is keeping me alive.
One is gone and one is back.
The little sister cries
and the babe lies on the doorstep,
along with somehing that you lack.
CHORUS
Aaaahhhh
Breathe in and out
O lord its coming to me tonight
peaceful the knives inside me still...
2*CHORUS
Dragging me by my hair....

Hi all,
I've heard Julian has a new album called "Rite" which is apparently only
available by mail-order in the UK. It's apparently 70-odd minutes of
instrumentals similar to those on Jehovakill. Has anyone heard it?
I'm desperate to get hold of a copy. Does anyone in the UK feel like getting
a copy for me and mailing it over (I'll reimburse you of course - a friend here
has a cheque account at a UK bank)? The mail address for ordering is...
Rite Offer
KAK Limited
7 Ivebury Court
Latimer Road
LONDON
W10 6RA
oh yeah, it costs #12.50 for the cd and #8.50 for the cassette.

Subject: Read it in books...
Hi,
I'll introduce myself, Ed Arthur, as a Cope follower since the early daze.
A brief history:
Cope, Ian Mac (formerly of Echo and the Bunnymen) and Pete Wylie formed a
band in the late '70s called the CRUCIAL THREE. Not sure if they ever put
out anything but they played at least a few live shows. (I've got my Bible,
Trouser Press Record Guide, at home and can later fill this out). Well the
CRUCIAL THREE split and Ian Mac went on to front the legendary Echo and
the Bunnymen, Cope fronted the Teardrops and Wylie (a major Clash fan)
went on to form Wah!, Wah Heat, Shambeko Say Wah!, (probably a bunch of
other WAH! bands) and finally going solo.
The only published Cope/Ian Mac collaboration that I know of is "Books"
(first Teardrop album) and "Read it in Books" (first Echo album).
Without straying too far, I suggest checking out Pete Wylie's "Sinful" and
Shambeko Say Wah's "Remember" both pop classics in my book ;-)
I don't think I need to tell anyone where to start with Echo/Ian Mac but
at least the first three Echo albums + "Songs to Learn and Sing" (for "The
Puppet" and "Never Stop") and "Candleland" (Ian Mac solo).
The Teardrops produced two albums and an excellent EP ("You Disappear From
View"), two posthumous albums have come out to date with outtakes, not
including Cope's greatest hits from last year. Cope's first solo album was
"World Shut Your Mouth" (didn't contain the song) which was followed by the
very odd "Fried". Both were released in 1984. This is about when my Cope
fanaticism began. I had been familiar with the earlier stuff but never
enthralled by it.
Troy Tate from the original Teardrops went solo and has put out an interesting
album or two although I've never heard any of his solo stuff. If I'm not
mistaken the other members are in the JAMS, KLF family! Maybe someone could
comment more.
I've seen Cope twice both times extremely memorable events. I think the first
time was 1987 and the second in support of Peggy Suicide. I missed seeing the
Teardrops in NYC around 1981 along with the legendary dB's and Pylon. For
some reason the show was cancelled. Major bummer.
Hope this starts things going.

Subject: Droolian, Skellington:Just how widely available are they in the UK?
Well, I'm stuck in a big dilemma. Do I switch to CD full-time or keep buying
vinyl? I bought Peggy Suicide on CD (foolishly I later found out, as the vinyl
had an extra track on it. GRRRR!) But then I carried on with Jehovakill &
Rite both on CD. But everything up until then is on vinyl. The only things
I'm lacking are Skellington and Droolian. jamesp has already kindly offered to
see what he can find for me in OZ (on CD) but I really want to find these two
on vinyl. They seem more "original" to me that way.
So, to anyone in the UK - do you know where I can find them? It doesn't
really matter where in the country the shop is (within reason). And I'm due
down in London in a month or two, so if you know of anywhere down there I
shall be eternally grateful.
                        Nicki
P.S.
Obligatory JC story, or "to answer the question : I'm curious how you guys
got into Julian Cope in the first place"
I used to like the Teardrop Explodes in the early 80's, and I think one of
the last big tours they did was supporting Queen. But the aged parents thought
I was too young to be allowed to go to one of those "raucous" Queen gigs. So I
had to wait until 1984 for JC's first solo tour (in Liverpool) which was
really good. I wouldn't say there was more than a couple of hundred people in
the Royal Court. But I've been hooked ever since. Though I have to admit that
his last tour (UK) for Jehovahkill is probably the best I've ever seen. I just
wonder what the future holds in store?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, Nicki mentioned getting RITE, and James mentioned seeking RITE, and
I've had talks with Jim and Jo briefly about RITE, but here's a basic
question: what exactly is RITE? An instrumental album, I take it. In
what style? Some of the Jehovahkill songs are pretty much instrumentals
with snippets of vocals thrown in:
necropolis, poet is priest, the subtle energies commission, etc.
is RITE along these lines?
And is it only available my mail order from the UK?
Also, what is the address one can write to in order to get information
about Julian Cope? (i.e. fan mail, I guess)

Has anybody listened to Troy Tate's solo stuff? How about Bill Drummond? I
have a couple songs from each of them, was wondering what the rest of you
thought.
Also, are there any Cope bootlegs out there? We can get a tree going, with
a US branch, a UK branch and an AU branch.
I haven't gotten many replies here the past few days. None, in fact, since
Tuesday. So how about it guys - any of you newbies care to suggest a topic
to beat to death?
One thing I'm gonna do today is start the Julian Cope BEST LP poll, and maybe
a Julian Cope BEST NON-LP CUT poll. Ahh, enough talk. I'll start it now.
Travis
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE JULIAN COPE / TEARDROP EXPLODES "Best" POLL
The first category is Albums. These can be either from Julian Cope or from the
Teardrop Explodes. Don't worry, picky people - I'll include a Best-Of Cope
and a Best-Of Teardrops in the results writeup.
Basically, list all the albums you have heard and assign them a QUALITY RATING
from one to ten, 10 being the best album you've ever heard, one being complete
crapola. Sure, it's subjective. That's the point of this survey. if you
hate all Cope then youre scores won't change the results, since a bunch of 1's
(or 0's) won't give any one album an advantage over the others. If, however,
you love PEGGY SUICIDE and hate the rest, then your vote will have a strong
impact on the success of PEGGY SUICIDE in the list. And finally, if you give
everything 10's, then your vote will be as ineffectual as if you had given
everything 1's, since no album benefits form your vote.
So basically, if you've heard FRIED and PEGGY SUICIDE and PIANO, vote like
this:
              Fried 5 pts
              Peggy 8 pts
              Piano 3 pts
or whatever tickles your fancy.
"What happens to albums that don't get mentioned?" you probably ask... Well,
I'll include two numbs in the over all score of each album. One is the total
number of points FOR it (like if PEGGY got three 5 point votes, six 7 pointers,
and a 9 pointer, then it would end up with 3*5 + 6*7 + 9 = 66 points total.
Now, if 20 people voted, and only (3 + 6 + 1) 10 people wrote down any points
for Peggy Suicide, and all 20 people put a '4' down for KILAMANJARO, then
Kilamanjaro would end up with more points than Peggy Suicide, even though the
people who heard PEGGY tended to prefer it over KILAMANJARO. For that
reason, I will include a second score, a ratio of TOTAL POINTS DIVIDED BY
THE NUMBER OF OCCURANCES oF "PEGGY SUICIDE" or anotehr album in the list.
So for the RATIO TOTAL, PEGGY wiill get (66 / 10) = 6.6 POINTS while
KILAMANJARO will only get (80 / 20) = 4.0 Points. Yes, math majors, this is
the AVERAGE SCORE for the album.
So those are the two scoring methods. Here are the categories:
1) Best Cope/Teadrop album
2) Best Cope/Teadrop non-lp cut (i.e. stuff from B-sides, EP's, etc)
3) Best Cope/Teardrop song ***
*** This will be handled a little differently. Don't write down every song
you've heard! Just pick your FIVE FAVORITE SONGS and write them down for me.
I'll simply see which songs get the most mentions. If no one but JIm and I
have heard "Doomed" but we both love it, then that's our tough luck.
"Doomed" will probably not end up the favorite song.
So there you have it! Just mail me your results! I'll compile them and as
soon as I have, oh, I don't know... 20 or more results in, depending how fast
i get them, then I'll issue the results, with the final results coming out once
everybody has gotten a chance to vote.
So go ahead and vote!!!!!
Travis

Fri Mar 19 16:03:02 EST 1993
before you go writing down all the non-LP cuts, let's change things...
Instead of writing them all down, do what you did for BEST SONG overall.
So write down your favorite 5 non-lp cuts. This is like the non-lp
version of BEST SONG. Kind of like the NIT tournament.
Thanks
Travis

For those who were wondering, PIANO is a 1990 Teardrops release. It contains
singles from the pre-Kilamanjaro period, as well as various remixes of stuff
off of KILAMANJARO. It's pretty good. Not as smooth as Wilder and not as
tight as Kilamanjaro, but the songs can be really catchy. Yes, there are many
songs on PIANO that aren't on the albums.

I can't believe how bloody stupid I am!!!!!!!!!!
Kevin wrote me a letter, to post on the mailing list. Well, I saved it in a
file, as I always do, called "art.1". I read it and had lots of things to say
about it, lots of comments, and I was really eager to respond, so I typed what
I usually type when I want to write an article: "cat > art.1" Then I hit
return and instantly kicked myself! I had just overwritten his nice article!
Damn it!
So I aborted the editt, but it was too late: his letter had been erased!
Well, luckily I have PCPLUS, so I used alt-F6 to scroll up and did some
print screens. Then I re-typed in his entire letter, which took about 20
minutes since I'm not the fastest typist in the world.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I saved the article, once more, to "art.1"
Ahh, now I can write my response, I said, and promply typed, "cat > art.1"
and hit return.
SHIT!
That is where I am now. I have just deleted Kevin's entire letter for the
second time. I feel like such a moron. I will die if I have to type it in
again! Jeesh! So i'll paraphrase (forgive me, Kevin!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LETTER FROM KEVIN (PARAPHRASED)
...This is my first post here...
...sucks that julian is dropped from island...
...friend lent me st julian in high school, it was a change in my listening

etc...
...listen to modern-rock radio station now instead of madonna/phil collins...
...won My Nation Underground via radio station...
...impressed about rorschach and poisoned dog in My Nation Underground cover...
...have you ever noticed: Vegitation--->double vegitation --> peggy suicide
is missing??? ANy other occurances?
...anyone heard comparisons between teardrops and inspiral carpets?
...heard droolian once.. what is it? he took acid and recorded a while album
in a weekend?
...so he has albums before Saint? Are they easy to find?
<then kevin casts his VOTES, like the rest of you should be doing>
OK, enough babbling,
Kevin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So that was the condensed, butchered version of Kevin's post. Maybe I can
make up for my blunder by responding to some of his questions myself.
First of all, thanks for writing, kevin. Sorry I screwed up your letter,
twice!
Here's a list of all the (known) Teardrop Explodes and Julian Cope Albums, in
order of their release (approximate)
THE TEARDROP EXPLODES
 Kilamanjaro

 World Shut Your Mouth
 Fried
 Saint Julian
 My Nation Underground
 Skellington
 Droolian
 Peggy Suicide

IN answer to your teardrops/inspiral carpets question: no, I have not heard
any comparisons. I think most Teardrops fans would be offended to have the
band compared to the Inspiral Carpets. This is because the Inspiral Carpets
are often thought of as crap. Now, I'm not an Inspiral Carpets hater, and I
do have 2 of their albums (though i never play them) but I must say that the
sheer excitement and originality level of the early Teardrops music far
surpasses the (comparably) lame mimickry of the Inspiral Carpets. Sorry if
you are a Carpets fan! But you are in a room of teardrops fans!
Um, I get the vegitation --> double vegitation link, but not the double
vegitation --> peggy suicide is missing link that you alluded to.
Um, there's easy easy rider --> slow rider ( a long shot ) and certainly
hanging out and hung up on the line --> hung up and hanging out to dry
also great white hoax --> great white wonder
Safe Surfer (droolian) --> Safesurfer (Peggy Suicide)
Elegant Choas --> Oh King of Choas
(oops! Chaos, darn it, Chaos!)
and World Shut Your Mouth (album) --> World Shut Your Mouth (song)
I guess most of those are just coincidences, though....
Um, about his earlier albuyms:
the first one I got was St Julian, which I really liked. When I eventually
got around to the earlier stuff, i wasn't really ready for the "step backwards"
from the driving punk-pop of St Julian to the almost psychedelic
dissonant ditties of World Shut Your Mouth and Fried.
I'm not gonna give out the poll results until we get more votes, but I will
allude to the folliwng results so far:
Nahh, I won't. I'll let people vote first.
WEll, the Teardrops stuff is the least heard stuff heard so far (or least voted)
but it also has the highest ratings. THe early Cope is also relatively
unheard (only 2 people rated FRIED, for instance) but several reviews I have
read proclaim WORLD SHUT... and FRIED to be Cope's best work.
Some people like the Peegy Suicide stuff more than the older stuff, and some
like the older stuff better.
Personally, I love the first two albums. THat's probably becausee right now I
am listening to WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH. When i originally cast my votes, I
rated WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH 3 points lower than PEGGY SUICIDE, but right now,
I'm inclined to to it's at least as good if not better than the PEGGY album.
This sounds like heresy to some of the Peggy Suicide lovers, but just
remember: a week ago I thought PEGGY was tops, too...
So Kevin, my point is:
Check out WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH and FRIED. They are excellent albums (in my
opinion). Nobody *HATES* them. Some people *LOVE* them. i used to think
Saint Julian was king, and Peggy Suicide was queen, and jehovahkill was god,
but it all depends on your mood. More likely than not, you will grow to love
the earlier stuff just as much (if not more) than what you've already listened
to.
And about the Teardrops:
same thing goes. Some people love 'em better than Cope's solo stuff. So far,
my scores of the TEARDROPS stuff are lower than anybody else's! i tend to vote
conservatively, but you get my point: people love the teardrops, and who knows?
you might be a teardrop-lover too. So definatley give them a shot, too!
That's about all,
Travis

I forgot to answer one of Kevin's questions: availablity.
Here's what I've encountered as the availability of the albums. I'm living
in Virginia (USA) and I've bought all these albums in the last 2 years, so
the avilability (hopefully) hasn't changed much:
TEARDROP EXPLODES:
Kilamanjaro --> out of print. very difficult-to-find. I got it from station
It was released on CD and vinyl, but I'm not sure about
                  cassette.
Wilder --> hard to find. I bought the CD last summer.
Everybody wants to shag --> on tape!!! bought it last summer.
Piano --> hard to find. I bought the CD last summer. I don't think WILDER
and PIANO were ever released on cassette. Only EVERYBODY WANTS
           TO SHAG... I think.
JULIAN COPE:
World Shut Your Mouth --> CD/vinyl only? Bought the CD last summer. I've
seen it in stores fairly recently, so I'm pretty
                           sure it's readily available.
Fried --> Ditto. Bought the CD last summer.
Saint Julian --> Bought the tape last summer. Easy to find.
My Nation Underground --> Bought the tape last summer. Easy to find.
Skellington --> IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN THE U.S. Wasn't really
released here, except (Jim says) in Texas. It's
a bitch to find. I suggest you beg one of us to
dub it for you, or move to Britain.
Droolian --> Same as with Skellington - bitch to find.
Peggy Suicide --> Very easy to find
 Jehovahkill           --> easy to find
Rite --> ???? mail order only, i think???
Can someone give me some info on RITE?
Oh yeah, I don't have a CD player or a record player, so I get tapes as much
as possible. i think all the cope/teardrops is on CD and Vinyl, and I think
the follwing are NOT available on cassette: Kilamanjaro, Wilder, Piano,
World Shut Your Mouth, Fried, Skellington, Droolian.
Does taht help?
Travis
P.S. please forgive the tpyos!

Heh
I'm amused over all the stuff that happened to my post :). It was just a
measley midday havent-eaten-breakfast-yet, wednesday-of-vacation kind of
post, :).
The links I was referring to were the fact that either a song or albumtitle
is continued, like Peggy Suicide the title coming back as PSIM, so it wasn't
explicitly from double vegetation.
(I see now that there's a lot of this going on, what with World Shut Your
Mouth the album, etc etc.)
I will look for more stuff! I will! :) If I'd seen the prior albums to
Saint, I probably would have snapped them up!
---
so Bill Drummond used to be in Teardrop Explodes? My KLF-liking friend
might like to hear that.
My college radio station (KCSB, in Santa Barbara CA) has one Teardrop
Explodes album, I've played it a couple of times. The song was "...the
poppies are in the field, but don't ask me what that means..." It was
really great, I want to dub the whole thing some time.
Kevin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kevin, I think the album you're talking about is KILAMANJARO. I think.
i dubbed KILAMANJARO along with a buttload of EP's and B-sides, so I don't
actually remember what is on the album and what isn't. But I'm almost
positive it's from KILA.
Everybody - what are some differences you've noticed between the tracks on
FLOORED GENIUS and the originals? Well, there are only 2 that I'
have picked up on:
1) On FRIED, "Reynard the Fox" has drums just in one ear (I think the right).
This may just be my copy (I have the CD version) but i doubt it. Anyway, the
FLOORED GENIUS version has drums in both ears (at least the CD of FLOORED that
I listened to did).
2) THe intro piano-banging to "Out Of My Mind On Dope And Speed" is longer
on SKELLINGTON than on FLOORED GENIUS.
Any other differences?

# so Bill Drummond used to be in Teardrop Explodes? My KLF-liking friend
# might like to hear that.
Not quite - he used to manage them. This is where the song "Bill Drummond Said"
came from (they seemed to have a hate-hate relationship!). Dill Drummond
then wrote "Julian Cope Is Dead" (i shot him in the head etc etc) in
retalliation (a funny, but bad song). JCID appears on Bill Drummond's solo
lp on Creation called "The Man" (a self parody LP methinks)
ah-intrigue.

While we're on the Bill Drummond subject, here's a little blurb from the
Beautiful Love EP about the man. Julian makes it pretty clear he doesn't
like the guy, but who's Balfe?
PORT OF SAINTS... is self-explanatory. Balfe and Bill Drummond now exist
only in my unconscious, but I shall always be paranoid of their desire to
do me wrong. Quite a timely slag-off really, as Drummond has just seen fit
to release all kinds of old material without asking anyone's permission.
The poor guy - ever the entrepreneur - torn between '80s W.A.S.P.
intellectual KAKA and a superb organisational ability.
                                                                - Julian Cope

David Balfe was the keyboard player in The Teardrop Explodes, also
Julian's arch-enemy (from JCs point of view), I don't know exactly
why...maybe they just had a personality clash (anyone know?)
At any rate, he still holds the grudge as on the back of the
Floored Genius T-Shirt that they were flogging at the recent gigs
it said 'Escaped from Balfie 10 years ago'
Balfe is now the head of Food Records (an indie label), I don't
suppose he has offered Julian a contract....

So far, nobody besides me has voted on PIANO. Do people know it exists?
Also, nobody has voted on RITE. It would help a greta deal if people
pitched in a few words about both these albums. Thanks.
