Notes
This collection of songs is a lot looser than Five Dollar Drummer. It introduces real drums, and includes a little bit of everything else up until now: keyboard, piano, percussion, guitar, cornet, mellophone, vocals, and talking. It even has guest appearances by my sister Jessica and my friend Josh. Yes, lots of noises. Lots of noise.
The lyrics are all over the place too. Attempts at Spanish, stuff for school ("I Do Care" and "Sarah Kemble Knight"), musical letters to friends ("Maybe", "Are You Gonna"), and the weird "Herbie Wake Up", which features surreal writing from an unknown author.
The title is a "clever" reference to "We Know Three Girls" and the wino in "Tunes from the Bottle". Hmm.
Some of my notes say that these songs were recorded during 1988 and 1989. Others say that the preceding album ended in early 1989. This seems to rule out 1988, unless I assembled the tapes out of order, which is unlikely. I'll assume for now that Wino Three Girls was recorded entirely in 1989. Not that anyone cares!

This was my first admission of exhaustion. I think I felt overwhelmed by the intensity of the end of Five Dollar Drummer. I wanted to slow things down a bit, get loose and experimental.
This was probably recorded in January 1989, during or shortly after the final Five Dollar Drummer sessions.
Lyrics to "Take a Break":
well i must take a break now
Song With No Lyrics
- Wino Three Girls track 2
- recorded: 1989-0?-??

Cheesy chord progression, out of tune synths, repeated dropouts in one ear, clumbsy cornet playing...
What a lame way to start the followup album to Five Dollar Drummer, which was my favorite bunch of recordings so far.
Lyrics to "Song With No Lyrics":
this is a song with no lyrics song with no lyrics

Wow, not much quality control here. This is very, very loose. It's funny at times, and almost catchy. Almost. Okay, to be honest, it's a mess. Sorry.

Babbling in (horrible) Spanish. I've kept the bad pronounciations in there. For your snickering pleasure.
Lyrics to "Spanish Talking":
hola, pabla es espion? oh well, there's my spanish habla espanol? si coma de llamas? como de llamas? me llamo travis y tu? me llamo travis eres di mexico? no no eres de charlottesville charlottesville boy, what a spanish accent eres di charlottesville? si eres di franklin? oh gee wiz that's french, not spanish, shut up end of spanish class travis, you're kicked out all right, fine, who cares? no one does
I Do Care

Most of the lyrics were taken directly from a sequel I wrote to The Good Earth, which is a book we read for English class. I messed up the lyrics many times. The underlying music never changes key or rhythm until 5:28, when the song turns into a chaotic synth improv. Weird.
For some reason, this song has an "epic" feel to it. Despite the monotony and sloppiness, I kinda like it.
Lyrics to "I Do Care":
you know what i'm gonna do? i'm gonna punish you guys i'm gonna play a song yeah, it's part of a story i wrote here it goes here it goes wipe out mahr lived a while longer when he was about 95 he married nao maes who was the granddaughter of wang lung's youngest girl youngest girl mahr died while nao was pregnant with his son, abargra who grew up to be just another commie abargra, abargra thus, the grand house of chang was dissolved into this new system wang, not chang, wang only one piece of literature accounting for the lives revolving around wang lung and o-lan remains it is written by mahr koos himself, and reads as following: i tell you that i'm leaving and you start to cry but my mind is made up; the decision is mine i'm going on a journey before i die i'm seeking out a man who is willing to try (yeah) his name is kung hang; he's a big city boss he's related to his father and steady as a horse money is no problem; it's clearly his to toss but the problem of the matter is he's easy to cross got the temper of a tiger and the power of a bear it's good to stay his friend, though even these are rare so when the land turned commie, and he found he lost his share his mind it just exploded; no, he thought it wasn't fair kung hang got arrested, tortured, and then shot (yeah) but somehow he survived it and lives to make a plot he plans to overthrow this govornmental blot and isn't quite content on his little modest lot i plan to team with kung hang and try and run a coup we'll try and get some people to help our plan through twig wing, you're my friend; i've had fun knowing you but now you're in your grave; this is for me to do i know you'll want excitement, the blood runs and the gore but buddy, try to tell me just what we're fighting for violence is out; we're wanting peace the more if it needs the bloodshed, then i guess that is the door good bye, twig wing, my good friend; i hope you rest in peace (rest in peace) boy, i wish that they could; we'd settle this in ease (ease ease ease) maybe they are wiser; maybe i see wrong your life isn't wasted; you fought so very long good bye, twig wing, my good friend; i hope you rest in peace boy, i wish that they could; we'd settle this in ease maybe they are wiser; maybe i see wrong your life isn't wasted; you fought so very long good bye, twig wing, my good friend; i hope you rest in peace boy, i wish that they could; we'd settle this in ease but maybe they are wiser; maybe i see wrong your life isn't wasted; you fought so very long good bye, twig wing, my good friend; i hope you rest in peace boy, i wish that they could; we'd settle this in ease but maybe they are wiser; maybe i see wrong your life isn't wasted; you fought so very long good bye, twig wing, my good friend; i hope you rest in peace i tell you that i'm leaving and you start to cry but my mind is made up; the decision is mine i'm going on a journey before i die to seek jah, my god so high so let me go, let me go, let me, let me go talk with jah let me go, let me go, let me cleanse my soul let me go, let me go, let me, let me go talk with jah let me go, let me go, let me, let me cleanse my soul cleanse, cleanse, cleanse my soul cleanse, cleanse, cleanse my soul cleanse, cleanse, cleanse my soul

This is a short, slow instrumental filler. It's kinda boring. I got bored while I was recording it, and ended it abruptly.
I think the title refers to filling an IV. Hmm.
Lyrics to "IV Filler":
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 oh hit it uh, i think we should erase all that
HN Filler
- Casio Picks track 16

This sounds like martial music. It has a decent melody. I don't remember why I called it "HN Filler". What's the "HN" mean???
Tunes from the Bottle (demo)

This was my solo version of "Tunes from the Bottle", which I also recorded with IPECAC (on Fake Reverb 2. Usually, my versions were demos which preceded the IPECAC recordings, but my notes suggest the opposite for this one.
It's an okay song. This version is just piano and vocals. It really sounds like a demo, doesn't it? Hmm.
Lyrics to "Tunes from the Bottle (demo)":
VERSE: i was walking home late one evening stumbled on a dead man lying in the gutter his face was gaunt; he had died of hunger stuck in his hand was an empty bottle CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their emptiness, shared their sorrows now I see that dead man's bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle was a dead man, a man and his bottle shared their emptiness, shared their sorrows now I see that dead man's bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle VERSE: it tells the story of a middle-class man who had potential but no ambition he quit his job and picked up gambling found success in acquisition CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their secrets, shared their sorrows now I hold that dead man's bottle i hear songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle VERSE: on new year's eve he got so wasted, bet all he owned on twenty-one would have been rich if his luck persisted but he pushed too far - the dealer won he pushed too far - the dealer won VERSE: eventually, he turned to drinking drink to escape, drink to forget the rest of his life he slept with his bottle he died in his sleep, choked with regret CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their dreams, shared their sorrows all he had was his empty bottle all i have is this empty bottle

Somehow Jessica and I acquired some helium-filled balloons. Dorkiness ensues.
Lyrics to "Sucking Helium":

Around this time, I started playing with the Anchovies. We often practiced in my parents' basement. Whenever Anand or Allen left the drums overnight, I'd inevitably gravitate towards them.
This is my solo version of "Schnell", which I also recorded with IPECAC (on Fake Reverb 2). The date of the IPECAC recording is 1989-06-09, so I'm guessing this was recorded around that time.

This is my original version of "Maybe", which I recorded with IPECAC and then later as Tripecac.
This version includes horribly out of tune singing, excruciatingly bad guitar playing, and cheesy keyboard drums. Enjoy!
Lyrics to "Maybe (demo)":
CHORUS: maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back VERSE: i mail you letters, you mail me not now how much patience have i got? i'm writing every single night it's just not right TRANSITION: i pray and hope against hope that you will write me oh i know it's been a long time but still i trust that CHORUS: maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back VERSE: you say you're too busy to write to me now that's one thing i cannot believe i probably have as much free time as you and i've sent you 300 pages TRANSITION: i pray and i hope against hope that you will write me oh i know it's been a long time but still i trust that CHORUS: maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back maybe, maybe someday, kimmi, you'll write me back BRIDGE: i send you all these notes and what do you do? you don't even write me back what's happening with you? maybe VERSE: every day when i get home from school i'm looking around for a letter from you and even after seven months have passed i'd think you'd write me at last TRANSITION: i pray and i hope against hope that you will write me oh i know it's been a long time but still i trust that CHORUS: maybe

Guitar, drums, and vocals, all in one song??? Yikes! And check out that drum solo in the bridge! Well, what I lack(ed) in talent I made up for in enthusiasm.
I wrote and recorded this for Allen Foster. I guess he was contemplating breaking up with a girlfriend (which he probably did).
Lyrics to "Are You Gonna":
ok allen, here is a song for you from me ready go live, sorta 1 2 3 4 here we go 1 2 are you gonna are you gonna break up with her? are you gonna are you gonna break up with her? it's all your choice i'm just curious are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? it's all your choice it's all your choice you can keep it to yourself if you care to are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! ahh! ahh! ahh! ahh! ahh! wipeout ow hey are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? hey! are you gonna break up with her? are you gonna break up with her? with her? it's your choice

We immediately segued into this rap improv. For music I fell back on IPECAC's "Repetitive Rap" (from Catharsis). Josh and I then adlibbed rap vocals on top. It's pretty sad.
I don't remember who "Chris" is.
Lyrics to "Josh's Rap":
trav: ok here we go josh: ok this is rap i'm ??? wait what's up you messin' on my turf you watch out i'm gonna cut you up i'm big, i'm bad, i got gold chains i have no singing abilities so i just talk and make rhymes i think i'm bad because i've got gold and girls and fur coat and a car yeah i'm bad i'm better than any rapper or mc i'm bad word know what i'm saying oh holmes let's get down go travis go this is my bad dj trav the m uh i got ??? i'm too stupid i didn't make it through high school so i'm just singing this song i'm making more than most people do who have an education so i think my song is through trav: ok chris is a nerd josh: chris is a nerd word up trav: chris is a geek josh: word up chris is a geek trav: and chris is a fairy josh: word up man you got it chris is a fairy trav: ok together now nerd chris is a nerd josh: nerd nerd nerd trav: chris is a geek josh: geek geek trav: chris is a fairy josh: fairy fairy fairy trav: so what does that make us? both: chris is a bad ?? is a nerd is fairy gay cool we're.. chris is a nede geek fairy gay we're [scream] trav: chris is so cool admire josh: he can play play too tennis trav: but josh inspires him josh: 'cause i'm an idol trav: yeah, and what am i? josh: travis is just bad trav: i'm just bad hit it josh: (beatbox) trav: and here's josh the beatbox trav: all right, let's sing it again both: chris is a nerd chris is a geek (geek) and chris is a fairy (fairy) chris is a nerd, a geek, and a fairy and who does he admire? josh, josh

Josh was tired of rapping, so we switched to blues. I couldn't find a decent chord. Not that it mattered; this just didn't get off the ground.
Lyrics to "Josh's Blues":

Josh got on the keyboard. I made up a rap about some girls we both knew. Mmm.
Note: For Josh's sake, I'll probably have to censor this before uploading the mp3.
Lyrics to "We Know Three Girls":
josh: travis, you rap this time trav: i don't know how to rap ok, i'll try though josh: sure i'll do, i'll do -- i'll do the bass line trav: you have to have a sense of rhythm 1 2 3 4 we know 3 girls they're really kinda pretty guess who they are [censored] wait okay ok that's good we know 3 girls they're really kinda pretty and who are they are? This is a repetitive funk groove. Initially it sounds like a nice, focused antidote after the disorderly songs with Josh. However, it soon gets boring. In the end, we file it under "forgettable".
In a way, this resembles the progression of my music in general. I guess all musicians feel the same "smoothing out" of their music. Except Julian Cope, who gets rougher ever year. And The Fall... Gotta love The Fall.
Empty Funk Take 2

Here's a second stab at the groove in "Funk 1". It's longer and sloppier than the first take. Why oh why did I even bother???

This is the weird climax to the album (Wino Three Girls). I was reading something, but I have no idea what. The lyrics are so surreal that I'm thinking they came from one of the Anchovies (Luke and Anand wrote surreal stories, but Jon wrote lyrics, and Allen is mentioned in the lyrics). Well, I certanly didn't make this stuff up.
The bass line is from IPECAC's "How Ya Is'n".

This is the audio portion of a video I made for English or History class. I'm not sure about the date. I know I recorded it after "Settlement of Southern Africa" (1988-04-10) and "Thirteenth Night" (1989-05-08), and the ending features the IPECAC version of "Anchovy Rock" (1989-04-13). So, this was recorded in May 2008 at the earliest, and probably not much later, since I would have picked a more recent song.
As for the audio itself, well, there's not much of interest. It's just a lot of boring talk and silly sound effects. The video isn't much better.
This isn't really part of Trex, is it? I might exclude it next time I do some spring cleaning. For now, I'll keep it on the end of Wino Three Girls, which has space for it. Let's call it a "bonus track". :)
