Notes

These are songs that didn't fit stylistically or time-wise on other Trex cds. The first few (from 2001) feature piano. Next is a Triton-based demo for "My Old School". Finally, there's a set of guitar jams which immediately preceded The Key of G.

Songs

Pinky Solo

I played all these notes with one finger (my pinky). Clap now. With one finger, please.

Lyrics to "Pinky Solo":

this is the bravest way to improv
one hand
now... gonna play one hand

one finger improv, okay
but i will use the sustain pedal
this is my pinky finger
total improv

and i'll pick the first letter that comes through my mind
which is an "a"

all right
that was a 1-fingered pinky solo
and didn't it bite

Short and Sour

The title is obviously a corruption of "short and sweet". Well, the song certainly is short.

Gist Intro

I was introducing the next song ("Pop Idea"). Nice mumbling!

Lyrics to "Gist Intro":

all right this is the --
this is the what the 26th
thursday the 26th of july 2001

a little song
it's probably gonna eventually be called "bellingham"
i don't have any lyrics yet but here's the gist

Pop Idea

This was my "pop" idea. Hmm. Ease up on the sustain pedal, dude! And the cheese! Not so much cheese! The bad notes can go too. In fact, how about a little silence? We could use some silence about now.

Jessotony

I recorded this on my Dad's birthday. For time reasons (and quality reasons) I omitted it and the next two songs ("Yet Another Blaa", "Yet Another Zzz") from the Dad Day Jam CD. Good riddance!

It tries to be trancy, but doesn't really settle into a comfortable groove, so it ends up feeling... um... well... monotonous.

Yet Another Blaa

Another boring jam, more a finger practice than anything else. Isn't most of Trex (and Tripecac) like that?

Yet Another Zzz

Hmm. This sounds suspiciously like the last song ("Yet Another Blaa"). Except it's faster. And tighter. And more melodic. Except for the bad note at 0:42. Very bad note. And the other one at 3:07. Another very bad note, but not quite as bad as the one at 0:42. Hmm. Anything else to say about this one? Nope! Hasta la Vista Ultimate!

My Old Intro

Here I am introducing the tape recorded demo of "My Old School". I later called the demo "My Old Demo". Pretty witty, huh?

Lyrics to "My Old Intro":

all right, today is the 6th of may 2002
the rest of this stuff was recorded
probably within the last month or month and half

what i want to do here is just present a quick vocal idea
without using the computer

the music you hear in the background is already programmed in
but i do not want to put the vocals in
because it takes a while to do the whole midi to audio conversion

so i'm just experimenting to find out
if the tape recorder is an appropriate way to demo a vocal idea

now this song is called "my old school"
and that's its working title
and it's old school because it's extremely simple

i kept everything as simple as i could
um, it's just like a simple banjo bass

i'm not going to describe it to you much
because by the time i listen to it again
i will already know what the song is

here's the vocal idea

My Old Demo

This is the tape recorded demo for "My Old School". It's pretty rough. And sappy. Just like the real thing!

Lyrics to "My Old Demo":

i remember my girlfriend's hair
and i remember, i remember, i remember

even though it was 10 years ago

i remember walking over here
and i remember talking over here
and i remember, i remember, i remember

i was a member of my old school
i was a member la la la la la
i was a member, a member, a member

walking to class or the cafeteria

and i remember my girlfriend's hair
and i remember the flowers in the air
and i remember, i remember, oh i remember

even though it was 7 years ago
or how many years ago it was

That's the Gist

I recorded this right after "My Old Demo".

Lyrics to "That's the Gist":

that's the gist of the idea

Fartrack

This and the next few guitar songs were recorded with my 4-track. They appear on a tape right before The Key of G, which was recorded on 2002-12-17. The tape had "Key of G" and "2002-12-07" scribbled on it, but the "07" was later changed to a "17". This could mean either:

  • the "07" was a typo (or "write-o"), which means I recorded these a few hours/minutes before The Key of G, or
  • the "07" was real, but I (mistakenly) thought it was a typo later

I'm assuming the latter. This means I recorded these songs on the day that I saw Giovanna a second time. This was also the day after I got laid off. Can you sense the anger?

Anyway, this song is 4 tracks of aggressive guitar. It's pretty rough.

Fortrock

This is another amorphic 4-track guitar jam. I like the super-fast solo a couple minutes in, though.

Fartrock

This is slower and sludgier than the preceding 2 jams. The sour notes inspired the crude title. It kind of reminds me Brain Donor.

Fasterd

This accellerates; hence the first part of the title. It's also awful; hence the second part of the title.

Convertorted

When I was listening to this for the first time years later, I pictured a missionary getting surrounded by natives. It starts with "tribal" drumming. The missionary tries to bring them beauty (the refined guitar sounds) but they keep coming back at him with their raw pounding. He tries other sophisticated means of converting them to his faith, but they always revert to drumming.

So, I tried to pick a title which reflected the missionary's contorted attempts to convert the natives. Get it? Hmmm.

Well, this really wasn't recorded with that much thought. It's just a messy collage of "test" ideas recorded on top of a distorted drum track. Double hmmm.

Key Eve

This is the last piece of music recorded before The Key of G. It's very simple, and sounds like a single guitar track, but I think there's a lower second guitar buried in there.
