Notes
This is a set of loud, sloppy jams recorded in early July 1999 on my sister's bass and her boyfriend's drums. I played both instruments simultaneously. Most of it sounds pretty lame; hence the album's title. The oddball is "Fourth Piano", which was thrown in as a joke. I don't have any photos from this time period, so had to scrounge up some semi-contemporary images.
Songs
Cheapass
- Simulameous track 1
- recorded: 1999-07-0?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:27
- Travis Emmitt - bass, drums, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I recorded this improv with my sister's bass and her boyfriend's drums in two passes using a pair of tape recorders. Have instrument will record, that's my philosophy.
I like the way the bass distorts. That was intentional; I wanted to sound like an electric guitar.
Lyrics to "Cheapass":
all right, this is travis' cheap-ass session 'cause i'm too lazy to drive over to my apartment and get my 4-track yeah okay, ready? this is a test i suck let's try again all right that sucked

This drum rhythm is kinda cool. Kinda. Sorta. Loses it at the end, though.
Travis is Dead
- Simulameous track 10
- recorded: 1999-07-0?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 28:44
- Travis Emmitt - bass, drums, vocals
This is a heavily distorted epic jam, recorded in one take (juggling bass and drums). I love the feedback at the start; it reminds me of Gang of Four. I also love the fact that the drums don't start until seven minutes in. Too bad they're so sloppy!
I really distorted the heck out of the bass! The vocals are really distorted too. It's hard to understand most of them. Not that you really wanna know what I was saying; the lyrics are very dark and raw.
This song was a catharsis. I was stressed about my musical lack of productivity. Tripecac had stalled; I was tired of my Yamaha SY55's limited polyphony, memory, sounds, and editing capability. I much prefered loose, noisy jamming like this, even though it was sloppy.
In this song, I pretended that it was now 2000 and that I had become a couch potato stoner/loser, that I was effectively "dead". That's how I saw some of my graduate school acquaintances. I really didn't want to be like them. This song is my criticism of their unambitious, uncreative personalities.
The interesting thing is that less than a year later, I gave up on the Yamaha SY55, abandoned the album-in-progress (South or Southeast), and bought myself a Triton and an electric guitar. So now I can jam noisily whenever I want. :)
As a "bonus", there's a tiny bit of "Christmas in Cancun" thrown in near the end.
Note: I'll probably censor the profanity before uploading the mp3.
Lyrics to "Travis is Dead":
??? i look back into myself but ??? and i talk to myself ??? i say travis, ??? gotta be like them it's 2000 and i tell myself i'll be ??? and i'm 27 and i will have what you like ??? and would you like the music ??? where the f--- am i now? travis is dead now i'm a cough potato a big pot head can't even write a song take too god-d--- long just gimme a bong so long travis is dead travis is dead a person i talk to all the time when i was little is dead where is he now 2000 comes and he's nothing but a somewhat slim but always miscontent discontent can't even speak right doesn't even give a s--- if he speaks right oh just f--- you, travis, f--- you oughta be dead come on this is called idleside idleside big ??? ified whatever just play the d--- music
Khazad Drum
- Simulameous track 11
- recorded: 1999-07-0?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:49
- Travis Emmitt - drums
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
The title is a pun on "Khazad Dum", which was J.R.R. Tolkien's other name for Moria. Yeah, pretty lame. The music is even worse. It's just sloppy pounding on drums. I guess the kick drum sounded like the drums in Moria.
Hopeless
- Simulameous track 12
- recorded: 1999-07-0?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:08
- Travis Emmitt - drums, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
More thumping. I don't know why I thought I would want to reuse it.
Lyrics to "Hopeless":
all right, something i can actually use later it's pretty much hopeless, don't you think?
Fourth Intro
- Simulameous track 13
- recorded: 1999-07-04

I was announcing the next set of improvs...
Lyrics to "Fourth Intro":
fourth of july 1999

- recorded: 1999-07-04
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:39
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This starts with simple, slow arpeggios, and then turns into semi-cheesy chords. And then very cheesy melodies. Yuck. Fortunately, it's short.
Change of Pace

- recorded: 1999-07-04

Lyrics to "Change of Pace":
all right and this is a complete change of pace it's like 15 minutes later

- recorded: 1999-07-04
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 4:49
- Travis Emmitt - bass, drums

I was trying to sound bluesy. Not too bad. For the first few seconds. But then it keeps going, and going, and going... There are pockets of almost-coolness, but lots of sloppy boringness.
Fourth Punk
- Simulameous track 18
- recorded: 1999-07-04
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 0:52
- Travis Emmitt - bass, drums
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I was trying to sound punk again. Didn't really work.
Fourth Dirge
- Simulameous track 19
- recorded: 1999-07-04
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 5:13
- Travis Emmitt - bass, drums, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This starts off painfully slow. But gradually becomes cooler. Not too cool, though. This is still Trex we're talking about.
Lyrics to "Fourth Dirge":
this is called my fourth of july dirge
Fourth Outro
- Simulameous track 20
- recorded: 1999-07-04

- length: 0:05
- Travis Emmitt - talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
Bye bye.
Lyrics to "Fourth Outro":
that was my bunch of pretentious celebratory noodling
Compare That

Final words from the day's long jam session.
Lyrics to "Compare That":
now compare that to the gentle piano we heard upstairs
