Notes
In the summer of 1997, I went on my first big solo trip. I spent two months travelling in the Pacific Northwest, focusing on Alaska. I totally loved it, and ended up taking two more trips there before moving to Bellingham.
This Trex collection is recorded entirely in Charlottesville. It is split between the days right before my trip and the first few months of grad school. The title refers to my taking a cross-country bus to Bellingham before hopping on a ferry to Alaska.

I was almost ready for the trip to Alaska. This quick song has a nervous impatience to it. Or maybe that's just my imagination.
Monday Blitz

- length: 17:23
- Travis Emmitt - piano, talking

What sort of "blitz" takes seventeen minutes??? This one! It's actually pretty cool in parts.
Lyrics to "Monday Blitz":
all right i'll start ??? [scat]
I Wanna Live It All

- Riding the Greyhound track 3
- recorded: 1997-06-??

Wow, ambition! Where art thou nowadays?
I was trying to play punk on piano while warbling like Johnny Rotten. So, do I get an F or an F minus?
Lyrics to "I Wanna Live It All":
this will be totally poo-poo this is piano punk i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all [scat] i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna live it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna see it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna know it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna ??? Riding the Greyhound
- Riding the Greyhound track 4
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:15
- Travis Emmitt - piano, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I was getting ready to take the bus across the country. The music is very "lumbering". Like a big bus. It fades into the distance. Like a big bus. Right?
Lyrics to "Riding the Greyhound":
riding the greyhound
Smothered
- Riding the Greyhound track 5
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 7:04
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
At first, the muffled bass sounds cool. But then you realize that the recording is just horribly distorted. As for the music, well, it's not too bad. For improvs, it's pretty good. The delicate chords at the end are particularly nice.
Have You Seen the Dogs?
- Riding the Greyhound track 6
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:09
- Travis Emmitt - piano, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is a bouncy, silly ditty about the pets. 2/3 of the way through I broke a string. And sang about it, of course. I kinda like this one.
Lyrics to "Have You Seen the Dogs?":
this is a really silly little song 1 2 ready go have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? she's outside have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside well, let them in tomorrow have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? she's outside have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside well, let them in tomorrow time to go to bed time to go to bed time to go to bed i'm tired time to go to bed time to go to bed time to go to bed i'm tired time to go to bed time to go to bed time to go to bed i'm tired it's ten o'clock in the evening i lost the f chord that's the f note now well, play on! have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? have you seen the cat? she's outside have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? have you seen the dogs? they're outside well, let them in tomorrow
Petstrumental
- Piano Picks track 8
- Riding the Greyhound track 7
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:41
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This rocking instrumental was inspired by the pets. It's a little sloppy in the beginning, but is the kind of music I love to create on piano; it's got a steady beat and is almost 100% solos.
Do you hear that metallic raspy sound in the background? That's the broken string from "Have You Seen the Dogs". It kinda sounds like a hi-hat, making this song even cooler.
Peta and Woodie
- Piano Picks track 9
- Riding the Greyhound track 8
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:49
- Travis Emmitt - piano, vocals

Yet another song about the dogs. The singing is painful, but the melodic idea is kinda of nice. I like this one.
Lyrics to "Peta and Woodie":
another silly song got 2 dogs in the room with me... oh got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me their names oh god try again got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me ??? got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me and their names are peta and woodie peta and woodie
My Singing Has Improved
- Riding the Greyhound track 9
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 0:05
- Travis Emmitt - piano, talking

I didn't, and don't, think much of my singing. Do you? Didn't think so.
Lyrics to "My Singing Has Improved":
hey, aren't you glad my singing has improved over the years?
Looking West
- Riding the Greyhound track 10
- recorded: 1997-06-2?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:13
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
It was almost time to leave for my trip... I was trying to be pensive, but got too excited. The thoughtful riff gets impatiently loud at times. Oh well, the wait is almost over.
I'm guessing that this was recorded the same day as "Itching to Go".
Itching to Go
- Riding the Greyhound track 11
- recorded: 1997-06-2?
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 4:12
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is the last song that I recorded before embarking on my first Alaska trip. I left Charlottesville on 1997-06-26, so I'm guessing this was recorded a day or two earlier.
The music is fast, determined, and full of risk-taking. There's a lot of emotion in here, and it's not wimpy, lovey-dovey emotion. I like this.
The long fade at the end symbolizes a bus fading off into the distance.
Back from AK
- Riding the Greyhound track 12
- recorded: 1997-08-29

I had just returned from my first Alaska trip, and was rusty. Very rusty.
The sad thing is, you probably can't really tell that I was rusty, because even my "good" playing sounds pretty awful. Sigh. Well, welcome back Trav anyway!
Lyrics to "Back from AK":
29th of august 1997 just got back this morning from seattle and here i go
Gentlemental
- Riding the Greyhound track 13
- recorded: 1997-0?-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 0:55
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This gentle instrumental was the first song I recorded in my grad school apartment. I used my dad's acoustic guitar (as I had in Alexandria). As you can see, I hadn't improved at all, and as of 2007 still haven't.
DIScoherent
- Riding the Greyhound track 14
- recorded: 1997-11-23

- length: 0:43
- Travis Emmitt - talking

I was taking a class called Distributed Information Systems (DIS). It was kinda scary. I ended up getting an A. Yay me!
Too bad my musicianship isn't on par with my nerdiness! Well, you don't have anything to worry about here; no music, just talking.
This chant was recorded the night before a big presentation. I sound pretty drunk.
Lyrics to "DIScoherent":
there is a microphone down down in the bowels in the earth and it's called the travis microphone today is the 23rd of november 1997 tomorrow i give my big presentation in distributed interactive simulation which is actually d.i.s. as in dis-stupid like dis-stupid i give my presentation tomorrow and i will be ??? but ??? mind ??? it's like the squirrels don't mind if they have a bad day i will have a bad day but that's okay because you can sing a song of six pence it goes like this if you have a six pence then you can spend it on stuff you like but if you don't then you must whore yourself
Studicide
- Acoustic Picks track 7
- Riding the Greyhound track 15
- recorded: 1997-11-28

This is about students getting so stressed out that they kill themselves. Yay!
Well, I survived. So that makes this a comedy! Just like "Blame the Game". I guess I was making fun of the students who were stressed about classes. I was stressed a little too, but not that stressed.
Lyrics to "Studicide":
i pull the rope across my throat i pull the noose across the floor i take from under the table i pull the gun from the drawer i pull the noose across the floor i pull the pills from cabinet don't change my mind 'cause it is set i pull the blade from the shelf i don't wanna do this to myself i'm not really all that sad it's mostly my mood that's turned bad i don't have a bell that i can ring i don't have a way of calling you i don't have a way of getting my need for attention fulfilled so i take this pill and i put it in my mouth i don't have a care in the world but neither do i have a supporting girl i don't even have concerned friends who would know if travis came to an end i take the rope and put it around my neck but the fact that i have an audience right now is enough to cheer me up, cheer me up i'm not really sad all i am is an actor; brilliant i'm trying to watch tv right now i'm trying to do 2 things at once someone's suffering someone's really pulling a gun out of the drawer or a rope across the floor or a bottle from the shelf or a pill from the bottle or a bullet from a bullet from a cardboard box that says "bullets" and they're gonna put the gun to their head and what do i care? and i don't give a crap because my name is on map and other people's lives are their own business i pull the pills down from the shelf i'm thinking about ending myself i pull the razors from the case i can't stand the mirror's face i don't blame myself i pull the blade across my flesh i wish my life were fresh

Singing about ex-girlfriends is so cool!!! Well, maybe not. But it's a certainly a cathartic opportunity, and one that's hard to pass up.
Actually, the really spooky thing is that I met Giovanna exactly five years later, to the day! Weird.
Lyrics to "Number Six":
oh here we go with number 6 find a memory that sticks number 6 who's gonna be lucky number 7? lucky number 7 here we go with number 5 barely got out alive here we go with number 4 i don't want to think about her anymore where's number 7? i'm not going to heaven here we go with number 3 what has happened to me here we go with number 2 was it you? number 7 number 7 number 7 i want number 7 i want number 7 here we go with number 1 back then it seemed like fun here we go with number 0 and me, the future travis, was the hero
Hanging Over
- Riding the Greyhound track 17
- recorded: 1997-12-02
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:26
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I think I was hung over. This instrumental guitar improv isn't that bad, though. Sure, it's sloppy and out of tune, but I like the aggression that pops up here and there.
Dork Factor
- Acoustic Picks track 8
- Riding the Greyhound track 18
- recorded: 1997-12-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:51
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I'm not sure if I recorded this on the same day as "Hanging Over". It was definitely between then and 1997-12-25. I don't know about the alleged "catchiness", though. It's okay, but nothing special.
Lyrics to "Dork Factor":
this is a song very high in the dork factor but it's, uh, i guess kinda catchy
Subpunk
- Riding the Greyhound track 19
- recorded: 1997-12-??

Not quite punk. Okay, not even close! Not even close to being close!
Subrock

This is a lame attempt at playing rock.
Lyrics to "Subrock":

Original Histrionics

- recorded: 1997-12-25
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:00
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is the original version of "Save the Histrionics". I had returned to my apartment after celebrating Christmas with my parents. This is short and rough, kinda like a demo. Yeah, a demo for a Trex song; that's not saying much!
Lyrics to "Original Histrionics":
this is christmas day 1997 save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides and she wonders ??? and can i put the feelings and stuff and all the love and stuff
Save the Histrionics

I was tired of emotional girlfriends. At first I wanted to write a song about pushing all the histrionics onto the "b-sides", but then I realized that "c-sides" was even more remote.
I had never heard the term "c-sides" before (except for the obvious un-punny "sea sides"). Since then, however, I have seen "c-sides" in a few places. Copy cats!
Lyrics to "Save the Histrionics":
save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides she looked -- save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides she wanted to ask if i can put feelings and love and all that stuff on the a-sides and i just said "no way - whatever" save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides save the histrionics for the c-sides etc. [scat] she comes to my crying with an ear in her eye and she said "i wanna have this my way" she comes to my crying with a tear and her sigh and she said "travis, you gotta make this nice and emotional and all that crap"
Weird Anchovy Rock

This is an almost-funky guitar version of "Anchovy Rock", which was the Anchovies's theme song.
This might have been recorded in 1998; I'm not sure.
Lyrics to "Weird Anchovy Rock":
this is a weird anchovy rock
