This was my solo version of "Tunes from the Bottle", which I also recorded with IPECAC (on Fake Reverb 2. Usually, my versions were demos which preceded the IPECAC recordings, but my notes suggest the opposite for this one.
It's an okay song. This version is just piano and vocals. It really sounds like a demo, doesn't it? Hmm.
Lyrics to "Tunes from the Bottle (demo)":
VERSE: i was walking home late one evening stumbled on a dead man lying in the gutter his face was gaunt; he had died of hunger stuck in his hand was an empty bottle CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their emptiness, shared their sorrows now I see that dead man's bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle was a dead man, a man and his bottle shared their emptiness, shared their sorrows now I see that dead man's bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle VERSE: it tells the story of a middle-class man who had potential but no ambition he quit his job and picked up gambling found success in acquisition CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their secrets, shared their sorrows now I hold that dead man's bottle i hear songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle songs of sorrow, tunes from the bottle VERSE: on new year's eve he got so wasted, bet all he owned on twenty-one would have been rich if his luck persisted but he pushed too far - the dealer won he pushed too far - the dealer won VERSE: eventually, he turned to drinking drink to escape, drink to forget the rest of his life he slept with his bottle he died in his sleep, choked with regret CHORUS: there was a man, a man and his bottle they shared their dreams, shared their sorrows all he had was his empty bottle all i have is this empty bottle
Lunch Time
- Piano Picks track 2
- Fullerton track 32
- started: 1996-08-??
- recorded: 1996-1?-??
- location: Fullerton
- length: 1:13
- Travis Emmitt - piano, vocals

This is a silly but kinda catchy little piano and vocal ditty. The lyrics are shaped like a circle, so that they can be sung forever. Who would do that, though?
Some notes suggest this was written in August 1996. I'm guessing that was just the lyrics, because it appears on the tape labeled "October - November 1996".
Lyrics to "Lunch Time":
lunch time, lunch time it'll probably also be my dinner fine, that's fine maybe i'll get a little thinner, fine, look fine maybe i'll find a little sinner, mine, all mine about time, yes almost time for lunch time, lunch it'll probably also be my dinner fine, that's fine maybe i'll get a little thinner, fine, look fine maybe i'll find a little sinner, mine, all mine about time, yes almost time for lunch time
Early in the Morning
- Piano Picks track 3
- Fullerton track 33

This is the piano-based demo for "First Thing in the Morning", which I recorded as Tripecac on Where's My Muse.
It's kinda sloppy (especially the solo), but the heart-felt essence of the song is definitely there. To me, this feels like the centerpiece of the Fullerton recordings.
Some notes suggest this was written in August 1996. I'm guessing that was just the lyrics, because it appears on the tape labeled "October - November 1996".
Lyrics to "Early in the Morning":
INTRO: this is just a little dinky demo VERSE: i get up early, brush my teeth and take a shower put on my clothes and have a bite to eat wave to my mirror and i try to feel empowered as i pull my fancy shoes onto my feet walk to my car and turn on the radio but they are hyper, mentally diapered they don't say anything i don't already know but they're making money quote being funny unquote CHORUS: first thing in the morning i hate them, i hate them VERSE: drive to the bus stop and i take my place in line i check my watch about 200 times i don't know anyone so i just read my book sit by myself, don't really mind finally get to work and i'm the only person there that's the way i like it; colleagues annoy me they don't say anything i don't already know and all they talk about is work and money CHORUS: i go to work and put my hours in and i hate it, i hate it i go to work and put my hours in and i hate it, i hate it VERSE: i get home early, lay around and watch tv i call my friends and talk about old times keep on wondering what has happened to me because i planned to be productive in my prime now all i seem to care about is prime time nbc my keyboard and my brain are collecting dust i don't do anything i don't already do no one to force me to try something new CHORUS: last thing in the evening i hate me, i hate me i regret the way i used the day i'm wasting, i'm wasting away SOLO: VERSE: i worry that i'm already metamorphing into something someone as boring as them i'll be just a number without creativity fattened up for slaugher like a hen they just wanna use me to solve their own problems but i can't even solve my own some of that fat i know is my own fault i'm not treating myself much better than they are i don't say anything you haven't heard before my muse is gone, my muse is dead i don't say anything you haven't heard before my muse is gone, my muse is dead i can't even solve my own oh i can't even solve my own CHORUS: first thing in the morning i hate it, i hate it last thing in evening i hate it, i hate it first thing in the morning i hate it, hate it

I thought this sounded dark and trancy, like Julian Cope's "Rite" series. It's kinda relaxing. I like it.

- Walk Around track 1
- recorded: 1997-0?-??

This is a kinda cute piano and vocal ditty about my family's pets (Woodie, Peta, Daffy). I recorded it while visiting my parents in Charlottesville.
Lyrics to "Had a Friend":
there once was a dog named woodie and he had a friend named peta and she had a friend named daffy and she had a friend named me there once was a dog named woodie and he had a friend named peta and she had a friend named daffy and she had a friend named mom there once was a girl named jessie and she had a friend named rosie and she had a friend named travis and that boy is me ugh

I guess I was worried that something would prevent me from going to Alaska. I don't remember what the threat was. Must not have been that serious.
The music is okay. The beginning is similar to "Peta and Woodie", which was recorded a few minutes, hours, or days later.
Lyrics to "Can't Go Dirge":
this is called my what if i can't go to alaska dirge
I Wanna Live It All

Wow, ambition! Where art thou nowadays?
I was trying to play punk on piano while warbling like Johnny Rotten. So, do I get an F or an F minus?
Lyrics to "I Wanna Live It All":
this will be totally poo-poo this is piano punk i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna take it all [scat] i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna live it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna see it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna know it all i wanna, i wanna, i wanna, i wanna ??? Petstrumental

- Riding the Greyhound track 7
- recorded: 1997-06-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:41
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This rocking instrumental was inspired by the pets. It's a little sloppy in the beginning, but is the kind of music I love to create on piano; it's got a steady beat and is almost 100% solos.
Do you hear that metallic raspy sound in the background? That's the broken string from "Have You Seen the Dogs". It kinda sounds like a hi-hat, making this song even cooler.
Peta and Woodie
- Piano Picks track 9
- Riding the Greyhound track 8

Yet another song about the dogs. The singing is painful, but the melodic idea is kinda of nice. I like this one.
Lyrics to "Peta and Woodie":
another silly song got 2 dogs in the room with me... oh got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me their names oh god try again got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me ??? got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me got 2 dogs in the room with me and their names are peta and woodie peta and woodie

Cute. Melodic. Nice.
Great start to an album that quickly becomes unbearably boring.
Lyrics to "My Name Is Travis":
and my name is travis don't wear it out i know i'm bad responding i'm soon going out my name is travis and i'm the only one with full appreciation of what i've become my name is travis and i cannot play my fingers are crippled my talent's gone away my name is travis and the tape is disappearing i really gotta go now 'cause i gotta work no more playing

This was semi-composed. By that I mean I practiced the main idea a couple times and then wung it. I kinda like it, and ended up using its main theme in later practices too.
Lyrics to "Advent":
this song is called "advent"
All About Me

Melodic and witty. This was recorded in a couple takes. I stitched them together later.
Lyrics to "All About Me":
it all started simply with a riff and a melody and then they asked me to sing but i couldn't think of a thing and then it was all about me it was all about me i really have to go after this it's one time through the many other things that are all about me are like stepping outside into the world and the air and the fresh breeze is all about me and then i'm gonna have this thing about a girlfriend or something and she has a list of all the things wrong in her life and i look at the list and it's all about me and i just come back to the idea of writing a song that was supposed to be a trivial little song and that has become all about me you know, the whole thing about the girlfriend and stepping outside so here i go it started simply with a riff and a melody and they asked me to sing and i couldn't think of a thing and then it was all about me and then it was all about me it started simply with a tune and a melody and it was all about me and it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me [repeat] i started simply with a riff and a melody and ??? sing i said i couldn't think of a thing and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me so i got up one day and i looked and the sky was gray and i said i don't feel like staying inside but what ??? so i ??? and i looked inside the door and i ??? breeze and i stepped out into the glory and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and ??? ??? like i needed ??? ??? i said what you talking about ??? ??? all that good stuff ??? enough and then it was all about me and then it was all about me she had written a list of bad things all the things that had ??? and ??? ??? and it was all about me and it was all about me and then it was all about me and then it was all about me and the song started simply with a simple melody? i ??? melody ??? me me me me me me me me me me me me me me that's when ??? going ???
Ten Minute Trance
- Piano Picks track 13
- Days Like These track 7
- recorded: 2001-06-21
- location: Bellingham
- length: 10:00
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is exactly ten minutes long. Aside from that, it's pretty nondescript. Repetitive, non-melodic, more an exercise in stamina than anything else.
Twinkle Trance
- Piano Picks track 14
- Days Like These track 9
- recorded: 2001-06-21
- location: Bellingham
- length: 2:21
- Travis Emmitt - piano

Repetitive high chords, not too bad in theory. In practice, kinda zzz...
Different Mood Same Person
- Piano Picks track 15
- Sleepy Sloppy track 10
- recorded: 2001-07-23
- location: Bellingham
- length: 7:49
- Travis Emmitt - piano, talking

The chords are C and Cm. I later expanded this into "C Cm F Fm". I like the latter song much better.
Lyrics to "Different Mood Same Person":
this is called: different mood same person
Tour de Yard
- Piano Picks track 16
- Daffy Day track 2
- recorded: 2003-01-04
- location: Bellingham
- length: 9:35
- Travis Emmitt - piano

The cat resumes her inspection of the yard...
The music is trancy, with a slightly tribal or martial flavor, especially near the end.
Nucleus
- Piano Picks track 17

- recorded: 2003-06-25
- location: Bellingham
- length: 8:33
- Travis Emmitt - piano, vocals

The lyrics and music are gently amusing and almost pretty. The antisocial sentiment might be a turn-off to some, but I think it's funny.
Lyrics to "Nucleus":
there's a little boy who walked through the forest and he loved looking at the trees and the trees they looked back at him but he didn't see them through the leaves not all the trees paid attention to him most just kinda of did their thing which involved staring at their roots staring at the sky it's like the earth is the past and the sky is the future travis is the present; we all look at him the trees need to pay attention to travis if they're gonna get entertainment today so all the trees turned to look at travis as he played a wrong note but that's ok because travis is forgivible he plays and he sings really crappily but that's ok because because even mistakes with him are livable and then the dead salmon slid down the stream their bodies decayed for two months and travis' nostrils thanked the rain and the world thanked travis' brain travis' brain was bigger than anything that day travis' brain just had to have its way everything aligned itself to travis' wishes 'cause travis does his own dishes ok so humor is not his forte but remember he's forgivable every day travis is forgivable because his mistakes are livable and he knows it the forest creatures tried to look at travis as he passed them as usual he was jogging and reading the moth on the trees twitched as he moved by but of course he didn't notice it because the nucleus sees nothing but itself like a black hole all thought is pulled towards the middle the nucleus sees nothing of the world except when the world comes into contact with it the creatures and the moths were too far away and so are most people - too far away and the uglies that travis doesn't go towards them he doesn't and he's gotta play now because he's getting self-conscious i should have left 16 seconds ago he says to himself in the basement of building where he doesn't belong playing the same repetitive chords of a half-baked song yet he is amused, yet he is happy making fun of himself this is the life of travis the life of the country mouse ok last, last cycle as travis slipped through the trees the world and him disregarding eachother urgently something snapped and he tripped and he fell and suddenly he was plunged into a green, furry hell the furry hell was named, um, bubba and bubba was a piece of moss that could walk bubba looked at travis and said "hey i didn't know you could exist a person who can read and run who is a nucleus unto himself who doesn't need anybody but who seems to be ok anyway you're not too clear" bubba said to travis but unfortunately travis ignored bubba, stepped on him, and kicked him into the stream where the rotten salmon mingled with bubba's twisty curly flesh and bubba stank forever bubba died, shriveled up, dead and meanwhile, travis just kept on jogging his knee slightly scuffled from the fall

I like these lyrics! They make fun of the sun-loving "amateur day" crowd at Boulevard Park.
The music is also pretty solid, at least until the violent "sunstroke" part near the end. I'm glad I had my earplugs in at that point!
Lyrics to "Boulevard Sun":
this is how it feels to be in the summer sun it seems so pretty at first but then you realize there's a bad note in it people say "oh how beautiful the sun, let's all go outside to boulevard park and sit on our blankets throw frisbees talk really loud wear skimpy outfits so that when people look at us we glare at them the only one who doesn't look at us is that geek who's jogging by with his book what a dork why doesn't he look at us why doesn't he look at us we are the queens and kings of boulevard park we love the sun it's beautiful just like this chord can you feel those rays coming down feel them falling down from god manna, vitamin e good for you, good for me everyone loves the sun everyone loves the sun if you don't love the sun you must be sick you must be disfunctional like that guy who's running by with his book he's disfunctional he's not a team player well, are we ready to go home 'cause i'm a bit beat do i look like i got a tan i feel like i got a tan ah, what a lovely day but i'm ready to go home now i'm getting a bit hot can we go home now i don't have any more layers to take off hey, i'm gonna go sit in the shade for a while, all right? i'll just be over there all right, hey, you guys, let's go, let's go home i'm gonna take a shower what do you mean you want to still stay here and play frisbee come on, i'm hot and tired; i want to go home no, i'd walk but it's too far, you know, at least 5 blocks i'm not gonna walk 5 blocks come on now take me home no, i'm tired of being out here the sun is just like, i don't know, i just feel sick how i wonder if that guy with his book got home already is he in the shade is he perhaps sitting on the couch with a beer in his hand enjoying the nice cool ??? of his clean, sparse apartment how i wonder if he enjoyed the wind brushing against his sweaty face as he jogged instead of just sitting here on a blanket collecting those rays, those rays, those rays by the way, i have to visit my mom who's in the hospital with skin cancer but i love the sun we love the sun everybody he asked do you love the sun i love the sun we love the sun everbody asked him have fun in the sun fun in the sun, fun in the sun fun in the sun, fun in the sun [...] he's got fun in the sun, fun in the sun fun in the sun, fun in the sun [...] i'm about ready to go home now i've had enough of the sun it's starting to give me a headache and then the sunstroke kicks in the heat exhaustion fries the brain the sun is no fun anymore

CBC was striking. So the regular shows were cancelled. I was going through withdrawl.
The music starts off schitzo, a disjointed mix of "classical" and "rock". Then it turns into full-fledged rock.
Lyrics to "Gimme Rock":
so we took a walk that night it was after a fight he said i would like a bite so i bit you, i bit you on the ear i said ha ha ha ha ha oh boy ??? only about 10 minutes left of this tape and then we took another stroll ooh and i said: my eyes are beginning to roll and you said: rock and roll here's the rock and rollie i like the rock and rollie i like the rock and roll gimme the rock and roll gimme the rock and roll ??? my rock and roll ??? my rock and roll i can't ??? unless i rock and roll gimme the rock and roll take away the classical come on cbc stop striking all the time i want my shows back ??? gotta have my rock and roll i want my rock and roll take away the classical bring back jazz and rock and roll i get tired of listening to same old bach and chopin and beethoven i wish they'd put on something a little bit more modern gimme the rock and roll and the jazz and anything other than [scat] i'm tired of the same of classical classical it's not even good classical 'cause it's bad classical too and example of bad classical is the song i heard yesterday when i was in the car this is a song which i've played too many times i cannot stand it at all no i'm not talking about what i'm playing on the piano right now i'm talking about what i heard in the car yesterday when i say the name of this song some of you will groan too you will know exactly what i'm talking about the name of that song which gives me shivers to think about which they were playing on the radio instead of my favorite cbc shows the name of that stupid song which i never thought i'm actually hear on the radio the stupid stupid song stupid stupid song i'll tell you the name just try to find a rhythm for it before i can say the name it's hard to find the rhyme just have stumble upon one by chance the name of the song is pomp and circumstance gimme my rock and roll i need my rock and roll take away the classical and gimme my rock and roll stop striking cbc oh how you're hurting me i want my radio but gimme the rock and roll i miss tom allen in the morning i miss jazz at night i miss the rock and roll on saturday night see i cannot sing anymore because i'm going through withdrawl i need my music again i cannot stand classical gimme my rock and roll i want my rock and roll gimme my rock and roll take away the classical see i can barely solo because i'm going through withdrawl see what you've done to me cbc you're inundating me with classical and since when does classical have solos it's just the same thing each time not spontaneity and i am i'm losing it because i'm going through withdrawl from my ??? fix of really nice music and i'm starting to converge on the music i dislike the most which is this stuff
