Notes

In 1996 I found myself moving back and forth between Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, and Southern California. Some of it was for work and some was due to housemates getting married, etc. I was living out of suitcases and boxes most of the time, which made it hard to use my keyboard for Tripecac. Yet the creative itch was still there.

I also had a long-distance relationship, so was in the car a lot. At first I talked to myself (this was before cell phones), but then I started bringing a dictaphone on my trips. I'd talk to it, sing along with the radio, and make up song ideas as I drove. Pretty soon I started using the dictaphone at home too, and thus Trex was reborn.

This collection of ideas, improvs, and babblings was recorded in the various places I lived (and drove) during that time period. They feature keyboard, piano, acoustic guitar, and vocals. A decent variety.

You be the judge as to whether my writing and improvisation matured during the six year Trex hiatus.

Songs

I've Got a Thing for You

I was driving on the highway somewhere, probably in Virginia. Felt like singing.

Lyrics to "I've Got a Thing for You":

i've got a thing for you
and you've got a thing for me
so why can't we
try and see
if we
can be
together

Here's the Gist

Did I spell "gist" right?

Lyrics to "Here's the Gist":

um
i don't even know if this is going to sound very good
but here's the gist

No Room Jazz

This is an attempt at creating a "hardcore" jazz song on my Yamaha SY55 workstation. It didn't really work, so I cleared it off the keyboard in order to make room for some other song.

I'm pretty sure I was in Reston at the time.

Raquet

This is a melodic, swingy, dancy ditty that unfortunately doesn't go anywhere. I don't understand the title.

I'm pretty sure this was recorded the same day as "No Room Jazz".

Drumb Machine

This is a simple drum machine pattern.

Moscowpie

I thought this sounded Russian. Does it?

This was probably recorded in one take. It's a little sloppy, but kinda cool.

Somellow

Kinda cool trancy groove, probably recorded in a single take.

Amazombie

Wow, this sounds pretty cool. It's very moody and cold. Neat.

The weak link is the melodic solos near the end. I wish I had just stuck to the ominous growls.

Upright Split

This is another attempt at recording a "real" jazz song. It's a single take, and very sloppy. On the positive side, it has lots of energy, and turns into a peppy jam at the end.

If at First (demo)

This is the original ideal behind "If at First", which I recorded as Tripecac on Mouseculine.

Lyrics to "If at First (demo)":

if at first you don't succeed
then try to put forth a little more effort
and if you fail again and again
again and again, again and again

then you're a loser
you're a disgrace
you stink
get out of my face

you're a loser
you belong with the cripples

Halfalife

Silly angsty song.

Lyrics to "Halfalife":

here's some stupid lyrics

i'm just not happy with my life
i feel like i'm just hanging five
right now only doubts and fears thrive
i feel like i'm half a life

i feel like i'm half a life
no
it feels like half a life
no, here we go, try again

i'm just not happy being alive
i feel like i'm just hanging five
right now just doubts and fears thrive
it feels like half a life

of course, you can guess the title: half life
heh heh

Makeup

Singing along to the radio, making fun of ugly people. Anyone who gets offended has a self-esteem issue.

Lyrics to "Makeup":

throw on some makeup
or i will throw up

Wise Over Live

  • NoVaSoCa track 13
  • recorded: 1996-0?-??

A popular song by the band Live came on the radio. I improvised lyrics on top.

Note: Since this contains copyrighted material in the background, I'll refrain from posting the mp3.

Lyrics to "Wise Over Live":

???
elephants stink
don't know much
aren't in touch

resepect your elders
for they will, uh, i don't know
see i am dumb

improvise
i wish i were wise
and
being wise is not a job for the 4-eyes
being wise is not a job for the 1-eyed

Spoiled

I was probably in the car, singing along to the radio. The lyrics make fun of middle class angst.

Lyrics to "Spoiled":

life it sucks, i must admit
sometimes i wish i'd started it
a little bit more unfortunate

Reviville

I recorded this piano ditty on a visit to Charlottesville. It's not very tight, but the main theme is kinda bouncy and sassy. Too bad most of this is lame improv.

The title is a cross between "revive" and "Charlottesville". Revive what? I don't remember.

Middle Man

Back in the car, singing something about being a middle man.

Lyrics to "Middle Man":

i'm not a downtown man
but i don't live in a van
some say i'm plugged into a lan
but i get outside while i can

i'm a middle man
a little middle man
i'm a middle man
a little middle man

i like to walk in the trees and the sand
i like to play with my microphone stand
while i admit my body's not tanned
i once wrote a play about the anchovy band

i'm a middle man, i'm a little middle man
i'm a middle man, i'm a little middle man
i'm a little man, i'm a middle little lamb

Winter Window

More yelling/singing in the car.

Lyrics to "Winter Window":

in the winter it is icy
but i think it's rather nice
to keep my window open
all the winter long

In My Brain

I had a music idea running around in my brain. So I exorcised it by recording this.

Lyrics to "In My Brain":

runnin' around in my brain
runnin' around in my brain
runnin' around in my brain
runnin' around in my brain

Better End

This is a moody something or other. It was supposed to sound "tragic" but the real tragedy is that my playing is so laborious. Fortunately, the second half of it is very nice; hence the title.

The next thing recorded after the following three piano songs was my drunken talking in Fullerton on 1996-06-29, which was right before I returned to Virginia. Although this means I could have recorded one or more of the three piano songs in Fullerton, my notes say that I recorded them in Charlottesville, prior to my Fullerton trip (which started on 1996-06-10). So, I'll trust my notes and assume these piano songs were recorded before 1996-06-10.

Unwiring

I opened up the piano and plucked strings with one hand while playing with the other. The sad thing is that I didn't know when to stop. It just keeps going and going. At some point the plucking became too difficult so I played normally with both hands.

Here Come the Crickets

The main riff is supposed to sound like "here come the crickets". Why crickets? Dunno.

Alexandria Intro

I was house-sitting a friend's apartment. She had a guitar. Of course, guitar plus Travis equals tape recorder, which leads to Trex.

Lyrics to "Alexandria Intro":

august 8th 1996
alexandria virginia
staying at tracy troutman's apartment

i'm playing on a, um...
it's a fender guitar
but it only has 5 strings
and i've only been playing for...
this is my 4th day now

um
yesterday i swam a mile
and it had been six years since i swam more than 4 laps in a row before

impressed?
well, you won't be after hearing me play
here i go

Stringtro

I like the sound of the guitar on this track. Too bad I didn't know how to play it!

Lyrics to "Stringtro":

thank you very much

Pretty Sad

Banging away on guitar with no plan... Not that absences of plan ever stopped me from recording before.

First Chair

Huh??? I decided to sing along to guitar. With zero planning. It's pretty awful.

The title is the best part of the song. In an orchestra, the best musician in a section is refered to as the "first chair". The great thing about being a one-man-band is that I am always first chair!

Lyrics to "First Chair":

and my ???
sitting in my chair
???
everywhere

Winged Intro

Hmm. I was actually "preparing" these songs??? Doesn't sound like it.

Lyrics to "Winged Intro":

ugh
as you can tell, i've never improved one iota on guitar
so ??? preparing these songs
so i'm gonna totally wing it this time
this is my song
i call it "wing wing wing, um, wing wing"

Wing Wing Wing

Wow, speed guitar! See how fast I can make mistakes! See how fast you can hit the forward button!

Actually, this is not so bad. At times it's almost catchy. Almost.

Sdrumming

The title refers to a cross betweem strumming and drumming. I was hitting the guitar with one hand while strumming lightly with the other. It sounds almost like percussion, except near the end where some notes peep through.

In a Box

Ah, finally, a decent song idea. It was an improv. I have no idea what most of the lyrics are, but I really like the melody. I think it has something to do with isolation.

Lyrics to "In a Box":

[scat]

???

and she walks by my window
and i ??? feel ???

and she looks at the stairways
and i can ???

and she says something to me
but i but can't control my thoughts

and she tells me she loves me
but i'm all in a box

i'm in a box

Alexandria Chat

I was giving a tour of the Alexandria apartment I was house-sitting. I used parts of this in "First Thing in the Morning" (on Tripecac's Where's My Muse.

Although this goes on a bit long and doesn't contain any actual music, I think it's funny and captures my whimsical yet calculating mood at the time. I have very fond memories of that week in Alexandria, and this recording helps keep them fresh for me.

Lyrics to "Alexandria Chat":

hello
i hope you heard all that
i don't think you did

um
one thing i'm gonna do is i'm gonna put this inside the refigerator
and you can tell me what it sounds like, okay?
i'll leave you in there for 10 seconds
all right you're in the fridge now
10 seconds
ready, go

hello, how was it?
i've never been inside of a closed refrigerator before
was it nice?

here's the sound of the air conditioner [whoosh]
it's kinda cold in here, which is what i like it
there's free utilities, so i can turn up the a/c as loud as i want
or as high as i want
it does get loud though
okay i'm gonna gonna flush the toilet...
here's the toilet flushing [flush]
okay wanna hear the sink?

there's little bits of gum all over the sink
because often i fall asleep with gum in my mouth
and then when i get up in the morning
i brush my teeth and all the little gum bits go all over the place

and, of course, whenever i brush my teeth, um, i'm very sloppy
because i'm an aggressive brusher
they don't call me "travis mister aggressive brusher" for nothing
how about that?

the only thing i did with a shaker before was "ipecac is dead my friend"

i don't think that's gonna work
all right, let me try to find something else in here
here's another air conditioning unit
air conditioner, with some hangers, and a hat
um, see, i'm supposed to...
actually, you know monday i leave to go back to california
for at least three weeks, probably more

hey, i'm gonna --
there's a bouncy ball
i'm gonna throw the bouncy ball
it's bouncing
ah, it only hit the ceiling once
i'm gonna try again
ow, it hit me in the shoulder
it's still bouncing
it's still bouncing
hey, it's still bouncing
i'm gonna bounce again
ok that was just 2 hits, i'm gonna try again
ow, it hit me again
it always hits me
i'm gonna try for 3
almost, i was so close
i was within 2 inches of 3 hits
ow, hit my foot again
it always hits me
i'm gonna cry
almost, 2 inches
dreadful 2 inches, hold on
got it, 3
3 bounces
all right, i see some more balls here
i'm gonna try them too
i'm gonna throw 3 bouncy balls at once
did you hear it?
there's a jingle bell
throw 'em all at once again
this is fun
ok here we go
heh
that was neat
um these are tracy's old cat toys

my parents are supposed to come visit me this weekend, uh, in alexandria
and then drop me off in centreville where vaughn and ryan now live
and i don't know what the function of this tape will be
'cause half of it is music ideas
but the other 90 percent of it is bad math
no, i'm just being stupid
the other half of it is, uh, me talking about myself
during different portions of my spring or whatever, summer
it's now summer
actually, now, in another month and a half it'll be officially fall
can you imagine that?
you know what's ironic?
summer comes so soon
well, actually it doesn't; never mind
actually wait, when does summer start?
winter starts december 21st
spring then starts march 21st
ok, so summer starts june 21st
yeah, but it's not really summer summer summer until july and august
all right, can you see how boring i can be?

all right, i'm going to jog to old towne
and i'm gonna go to subway
and get myself a foot-long sub
usually it's turkey breast
and i'll get myself diet coke
and that all together costs $4.99
so, so it's $3.99 for the, the foot-long turkey breast
and it's, i don't know what it is for the drink
but its total together is $4.99
so, and then i eat my muffin and orange juice for breakfast
and those cost me $1.94, uh, plus tax, say 2 bucks
so i eat for $7 a day here, ok?

now when i go to california and get continental breakfast,
which i take for lunch
and so i'm not as hungry during dinner
because i eat the stuff i bring to lunch
and um i can usually eat dinner for between $5 and $10
so it's about the same, $7 a day
but still, multiply that by 30
and that's $210 a month i spend on food
i really wish there was a way to cut down on that money spending
but i can't think of any way

ok i need to close these shades in here
um, because people might see me undress
and you don't want that
all right
there's people over at the pool
like i said yesterday i swam a mile
i'm kinda proud of that
can you tell?
um, my left arm is extremely sore
i got sunburnt after visiting beth

CSU Intro

This was my second trip to Fullerton (California, near LA). I snuck into the nearby college's music department to practice on piano.

Lyrics to "CSU Intro":

7th of september 1996
csu fullerton
this is an improv, ok
i'm gonna try to keep it short

Winston

Simple piano improv. It's not that great. I don't know why I faded out at the end.

The song is named after my boss at the time.

Placentia

I'm assuming I recorded this the same day as "Winston". The song title refers to the area where I was staying; Placentia was either part of or adjacent to Fullerton.

Mexercise

To get to Fullerton's college (which had piano practice rooms), I jogged through all sorts of neighborhoods, including some that people at my work said were "Mexican". Some people at work told me that those neighborhoods were dangerous. I never felt threatened, so continue to jog my usual route to the college. This was the start of my daily exercise routine.

I'm not sure what day I recorded this. It might have been the same day as "Placentia", but I don't remember.

Cloudless

This is a short ditty that is more of an arpeggio practice than something to put on tape. Only the chords at the end are interesting.

Nometronometronome

I wanted these moody arpeggios to sound like clockwork. Yet, I didn't have a metronome. I stomped occasionally, but that didn't help me stay in time.

Lyrics to "Nometronometronome":

all right, that's enough of that

Dersu

This "tragic" waltz sounded Russian. Years later, I named it after a character in an Akira Kurosawa movia.

Banging Tough

The title is a pun on "banging" and "hanging tough". It's kinda punky (good), but also very sloppy (bad). Near the middle it suddenly turns gentle and slow, which is kinda interesting. I suppose I could split it into two separate songs, but it's probably not worth the effort.

Didn't Work

Final words.

Lyrics to "Didn't Work":

that just didn't work
