Notes
Ah, computers. In 2000 they finally encroached on my music. Completely bored with my Yamaha SY55, I replaced it with a Korg Triton. I bought an electric guitar the same day, and then a Pod Pro a few months later. I found a way to MIDI everything to the computer and made the switch to PC-based recording and editing. Tripecac sprang back to life as a result.
Meanwhile, I planned and start my third trip to the Pacific Northwest. This time, I had money saved and a job lined up, so I drove out there with hopes of not needing to drive back.
The 2000 songs are from Charlottesville before I left and feature guitar (acoustic and electric). "Marathon" is a long piano improv which I recorded in Bellingham on my trip.

Just another introduction.
Lyrics to "Cheapest Intro":
all right so here's the cheapest recording
Our Own Fault
- Acoustic Picks track 15
- Marathon track 2
- recorded: 2000-07-20
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 4:12
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
The vocals are pretty faint, but melodic. The guitar isn't bad (for me).
I don't remember what I was trying to say, though.
Lyrics to "Our Own Fault":
we all do dumb things we all do dumb things but some of us won't recover we all do dumb things but some of us won't recover [scat] won't recover [scat] we all do dumb things but some of us won't recover [scat] we all do dumb things but some of us never recover we get covered never discovered we get buried it's our own fault
Don't Be a Part
- Marathon track 3
- recorded: 2000-09-29
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 0:03
- Travis Emmitt - talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
Independence rules!
Lyrics to "Don't Be a Part":
don't be a part don't participate
Evil Tuner
- Marathon track 4
- recorded: 2000-10-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:48
- Travis Emmitt - electric guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I think I recorded this by piping my electric guitar through the Pod Pro into the 4-track.
There's no groove or melody; it's just mindless improv. The exception is near the end, when I quote from "Tuner".
This is probably the first song that I recorded with the Pod Pro, which I ordered on 2000-09-29. I'm guessing that this was recorded soon after I received it (in early October).
Renut Live
- Marathon track 5
- recorded: 2000-10-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 3:20
- Travis Emmitt - electric guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is the backwards "sibling" of "Evil Tuner". It starts off sounding pretty awful, but then gets punky and trancy. I kinda like this one.
Pod Over Tutorial
- Marathon track 6
- recorded: 2000-10-11
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 4:28
- Travis Emmitt - electric guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I had copied a Triton tutorial into Sonar, and was testing it out. I quickly got bored, so I muted the tutorial and recorded an improvised electric guitar loop using the Pod Pro.
It's sloppy and musically uninteresting, but that's pretty much par for Trex. Besides, this demonstrates how much attention span I have for other people's musical ideas.
Marathon
- Marathon track 7
- recorded: 2001-06-21
- location: Bellingham
- length: 39:55
- Travis Emmitt - piano
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I recorded this epic piano improv in Bellingham on my third trip in the Pacific Northwest.
It's long. Very long. Extremely long. And it's one track. Very repetitive. Repetitive. Repetitive.
The title is a pun on Mount Marathon (near Seward) and the fact that I had jogged a marathon distance three times in the previous year.
