Notes
The songs for my cousin Kim are heavy on percussion and light on composition. Since I'm not a percussionist and had no way to edit my performances, the end result is a mess.

This is a chaotic percussion and sparse keyboard improv. It sounds like I had given up on writing songs, and just wanted to bang on something. I think there are (at least) 3 tracks of banging here; you can tell by the voices, the hiss, and my comments in "Lucky Three Chatter".
I'm pretty sure this was recorded the same day as "The Brightest Smile" and "Lucky Three Chatter".
See "Lucky Three Chatter" for my thoughts regarding the recording date.
Lyrics to "Mustard":
well this particular one's called mustard and it's a horrible recording and i hope it's good all right this one is it's just new it's trash real trash ready wooh ??? we're talking about the best d--n ??? in town we're talking about the best d--n ??? in town the best d--n ??? in town 1 2 ready wooh wow baby ??? woah yeah wooh all right that was mustard or mustard seed, whatever you want to call it
The Brightest Smile
- Kim 9 track 2
- recorded: 1988-04-16

- other names: The Brightest Star
- length: 5:23
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, percussion, vocals

The a capella vocals in the beginning (about no smoking) are kinda funny, especially if you consider the song title. I can't understand most of the other singing. I think is has something to do with a shark attack. The last bit collapses, and I forgot the name of the song at the very end.
Lyrics to "The Brightest Smile":
next one is gonna be the brightest smile brightest smile coming up the brightest smile brightest smile next one is gonna be the brightest smile brightest smile i suggest i i i i... suggest i i i i... suggest i i i i... suggest i suggest no smoking i suggest no smoking i suggest no smoking i suggest no smoking as you listen to this song i suggest no smoking while you listen to this song yeah the brightest smile i ever ??? the brightest smile i ever laid eyes on ??? the brightest smile i ever saw ??? ??? and the shark came and he ate up all the ??? swimming and ??? the brightest smile that i ever ??? he could ??? he ever got away the brightest smile that i ever did ??? was eaten by a shark while ??? the brightest smile that i ever saw was eaten by a shark and ??? the brightest smile the brightest smile it was the brightest smile the brightest smile and the brightest white teeth the brightest smile ??? shine ??? ??? ??? that song ??? and for the grand finale ??? yeah yeah oh no no no there ??? quiet that was that was the brightest star
Lucky Three Chatter
- Kim 9 track 3
- recorded: 1988-04-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:14
- Travis Emmitt - percussion, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This chatter is split into three parts.
The first part starts with an explanation of how I had been recording with 3 tracks. Then comes a "tour" of the percussion instruments. This dwindles off talking about whatever was on my mind, all the while banging those stupid drumsticks!
The second part has my voice slowed down a lot, using a dictaphone. I was trying to guess the date.
At first I thought the date was the 17th, and the later I thought it was either the 16th or 18th. The "funny" thing is that this was either the 16th or 18th tape; I wasn't sure because the label had fallen off. It turns out it was the 16th tape, and this was recorded on the 17th, since that was a Sunday. Since the talking in "Adios Amiga" suggests that it was recorded on the 16th or 17th, and since that was probably the following day, that means this was most likely recorded on the 16th.
Anywah, the third part returns to "normal" speed and gets us focused again on the songs I was supposed to be recording (rather than this stuff).
Lyrics to "Lucky Three Chatter":
lucky number was 3 i hope because i'm using 3s i'm recording on this tape first and then i record from there to the other tape; that makes 2 recordings then from the other tape back to this tape, so that makes 3 how's it sound? it sounds awfully i have some more instruments like this a canteen so is this ??? i don't, i never use those and these are just lids or tins and pans and this is a kettle i've been using this and that one and this is a frying pan and that's the top for the kettle here i'll give you a better that's gas, gas tank and what else that's the drumsticks hitting themselves um happy birthday the 22nd will be your birthday 3 months 2 days and 1 hour after me so i'm 3 months ahead of you not something to brag about reall i get my license soon driving license if i drive oh wow i've got to go upstairs ok and i'm not feeling very well okay goodbye all right can you hear me very good all right um ok good ok today is um the 17th i think yeah this is one ok and hit it 18th 16th anyways sunday all right can you hear me am i on the regular speed now see i was slowed down that was to catch your attention what's this tape 3 still side 1 um, what was it the brightest smile
Moop
- Kim 9 track 4
- recorded: 1988-04-16
- location: Charlottesville
- other names: Mooper
- length: 6:05
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, percussion, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is energetic but sloppy. At some point I got off sync, and never really recovered. Yet I kept banging away with enthusiasm, which is kinda fun to hear. The ending is a mess.
I'm guessing this was recorded the same day as "Lucky Three Chatter".
Lyrics to "Moop":
this one will be called moop m.o.o.p. i don't know why 'cause it sounds like i'm moping all right ??? wooh wooh blooper gotta make a blooper blooper wooh hey wooh wooh blooper gotta make a blooper wooh wooh wooh wooh wooh hey wooh yeah yeah number 1 ??? wooh
African Poo 1
- Kim 9 track 5
- recorded: 1988-04-16

- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This was an attempt at "toasting". It's kinda pathetic for the most part, although the "can you feel the rhythm" bit is almost catchy at times. The music is monotonous and the solos are super-lame.
This was a single live recording, no layered tracks. The middle and ending is very sparse; I think this is because I decided mid-song to add more tracks later (see "African Poo 2").
The mix has really bad panning. I think this was because the tape was dying.
Lyrics to "African Poo 1":
all right, how was that that was scary that was mooper hope it sounded nice you know i never even hear these things again they're just gone and you sit back and relax to them ok, i don't know what the next one will be this one's gonna be african african music, it's african, it's african that was some of the first scat-trav i did ok ready yes yes wooh i'm on the mic m.i.c. is mic not m.i.k.e. that sounds really stupid oh m.i.k. m.i.k.e. not m.i.k. we're jumping to the rhythm ??? we're jumping to the rhythm as we're shaking our shoes shaking our shoes we're jumping to the rhythm as we're shaking our shoes as we're shaking our shoes jump into the rhythm and jump into the pool jump into the rhythm like you jump into the pool jump into the rhythm like you jump into the pool and jump into the pool like you jump into the school jump into the pool like you jump into the school ha can you feel the rhythm beating on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm hitting the school air can you feel the rhythm floating through the ground can you feel the beat can you feel the rhythm on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm in the air can you feel the rhythm on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm jumping out of the windows can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm boy can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm boy can you feel the rhythm feeling in the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm coming down the doorstep can you feel the rhythm floating through the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm can you feel the can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm, rhythm, rhythm can you feel the rhythm coming ??? can you feel the rhythm ??? rhythm can you feel the rhythm, can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm, just tell me can you feel the rhythm feel the beat as it goes to your feet hey hey hey

This is "African Poo 1" sped up with at least 2 more tracks. It's just as stinky as the original. Sure, it's faster, but it's also sloppier and more out of tune with itself. Interesting idea (showing both versions) but poor execution.
This song gives me a headache.
Lyrics to "African Poo 2":
that was african poo 1 and this is gonna be african poo 2 and notice how shaky they are it's so disgusting how shaky they are ok hope this works african poo part 2 this song is gonna sound awful because it's sort of [scat] 'cause it's the tape, ok da da ready yeah yeah i'm on the mic m.i.c. is mic i'm on the trumpet yeah not m.i.k.e. that sounds really stupid oh m.i.k. m.i.k.e. not m.i.k. we're jumping to the rhythm ??? we're jumping to the rhythm as we're shaking our shoes shaking our shoes we're jumping to the rhythm as we're shaking our shoes as we're shaking our shoes jump into the rhythm and jump into the pool jump into the rhythm like you jump into the pool jump into the rhythm like you jump into the pool and jump into the pool like you jump into the school jump into the pool like you jump into the school ha can you feel the rhythm beating on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm hitting the school air can you feel the rhythm floating through the ground can you feel the beat can you feel the rhythm on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm in the air can you feel the rhythm on the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm jumping out of the windows can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm boy can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm boy can you feel the rhythm feeling in the sidewalk can you feel the rhythm flowing through your hair can you feel the rhythm coming down the doorstep can you feel the rhythm floating through the air can you feel the rhythm filling up the air can you feel the rhythm can you feel the can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm, rhythm, rhythm can you feel the rhythm coming ??? can you feel the rhythm ??? rhythm can you feel the rhythm, can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm, just tell me can you feel the rhythm feel the beat as it goes to your feet hey hey hey yeah can you feel the rhythm can you feel the rhythm did you see how much it shakes?

Next I attempted beat-boxing. It's horrible, in a hilarious sort of way.
The sound quality makes me think it was recorded on a different day. Also, the numerical song references in the following songs imply the same thing, since this would have been song number 1 for that day (the 17th).
Lyrics to "Wet the Mic":
this next one is called wet the mic [beat-box] this is the best of the 4 [beat-box]
Tell Me Sonny the Day
- Kim 9 track 8

The title was a pun on King Sunny Ade, whose song was on the tape before this. The music starts with a percussion jam. When the keyboard finally starts, the song really starts to stink.
There's a vague Spiderman theme at times; I don't know what inspired that. Well, maybe "inpired" is not the right word. There's really no ideas here, just lots of noise.
The "this first one" reference implies that this was the first song recorded that day, although I might not have been counting "Wet the Mic".
Lyrics to "Tell Me Sonny the Day":
this is tell me sonny the day guess where i got the title it's sorta like king sunny ade so i said tell me sonny the day all right it's rough, very rough but i worked hard on it, so all right this first one is called tell me sonny the day sounds like a perfect ??? ??? tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day wooh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day i guess it's about 5 o'clock tell me sonny the day ??? look at the sun, can't you tell tell me, tell me the day tell me ??? tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day tell me sonny the day wow does he impress you this is the prologue, ok wow that was tell me sunny the day now here's the rest of the song oh boy [scat] aren't they loud there, is that better that is very loud travis on the trumpet woah woah woah wooh wooh listen to the drums listen to those drums wooh yeah wooah we're number 1 we say we are scat-trav we are crappy we are kitties in a basket full of yarn oh baby one more time wooh faster than i can go yeah this is the appendix oh i bet you have a headache after that
Messy Chatter

This is kinda boring, but it states clearly that the only copies of these tapes were going to my cousin, and that I didn't expect to see them again. It was, in fact, almost 20 years later that I finally heard the tapes again!
The last part is kinda funny, where I talk about breaking my mom's canteen (which was one of my percussion instruments).
As for "making pretty good music", well... Ahem.
Perhaps my belief that the music was "disposable" contributed to my lack of focus? Or maybe I was just getting irritated with the "mess" of percussion that surrounded me in the studio? Or maybe I was getting bogged down in school work, having to write format papers, as suggested by the writing references? Or maybe I was getting sick from eating pencils?
Lyrics to "Messy Chatter":
all right oh i finally fixed my pencil i just sort of chewed it until there was just a little left you know my place is a mess; this is a mess down here and it's hard for me to move around but as you see i am making pretty good music and of course the only copies of this music are going to you so that i will never see these again just think that all of scat-trav can be your birthday present, right ok the last was one tell me sonny the day there was the prologue where i was tell me sonny the day, tell me sonny the day and then the body was the main part there was a prologue, a body, and a appendix, all right i totally screwed up my mother's canteen it is dead ok i have 2 options all right i can either buy another one for her or say it dropped or i can just sort of hide it no, i'm just gonna leave it here and if somebody asks... i'm shutting the door 'cause it's getting cold in here
Zulu Dance
- Kim 9 track 10
- recorded: 1988-04-17
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 5:22
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, percussion, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This Scat-Trav jam starts off horribly chaotic, with no beat or melody, just lots of banging. Finally the main rhythm (and scat singing) kick in, making it a tiny bit better. It still feels too hyper and sloppy, but there's some semi-catchy moments in there.
Lyrics to "Zulu Dance":
ok this one is called zulu dance well anyway that one's gonna be the next song i hope ??? ??? appendix after the appendix ??? song this one's called zulu dance ??? zulu zulu hit it ??? [scat] i broke my mother's canteen canteen ??? i broke my mother's canteen oh what do you mean i broke my mother's canteen ??? i broke my mother's canteen and boy do what do you think [scat] [scat] zulu dance zulu dance i broke my mother's canteen zulu dance and boy do what do you think i broke my mother's canteen and boy what do you think [scat] [scat] ??? hit it [scat] [scat] zulu dancing in a circle, zulu dance see, zulu dancing in a circle [scat] zulu dance zulu dance a zulu dance [scat] yeah let's zulu dance for a second while i go to the bathroom just kidding listen to the bathroom while ??? gosh ??? zulu dance zulu dance again [scat] [scat] zulu dance [scat]
Sloppy Birthday
- Kim 9 track 11
- recorded: 1988-04-17

This is a very sloppy birthday song for Kim. I recorded it a few days before her birthday, probably on the same day as "Zulu dance".
It's slow and messy and sounds like a complete improv. The singing is lame. The keyboards are out of tune with themselves.
The lyrics are not really for or about Kim. They are about myself (surprise, surprise). I was excited that my History Day project ("Settlement of Southern Africa") had one first place in the school's competition. Of course, the "funny" part is that I was the only entrant in my category. Anyway, I sang about that for a while, before politely returning to the birthday theme.
So, my "it's the thought that counts" comment at the end is laughable, since it's clear that I was thinking primarily about myself rather than Kim.
Lyrics to "Sloppy Birthday":
all right this one is played at the same speed all 3 times so it's not sped up it's not officially scat-trav but it's me, all right that's what counts rough version of happy birthday coming up how many days have you lived how many days how many days how many days... ??? keep track of days how many days how many days happy birthday happy birthday happy birthday [scat] welcome to ??? all right, let's try ??? how many days happy birthday happy birthday happy birthday happy birthday happy birthday oh happy birthday guess what my history day project it won first place no ??? guess what what guess how many people entered my category just one just one just one just one just me ??? i would like some sympathy just 1 and that is me i would like some sympathy just 1 and that was me that's so true so true ??? everybody loved it so true that's why i got first place ha ha ha ha ha ha... ha ha ha ha ha ha [scat] first place out of 1 that's no so bad nobody did better than me singing nobody did better than me that's something to laugh, that's something to cry about nobody did worse nobody did worse nobody did worse nobody did better than me nobody ??? nobody did better than me i'd like to see some real competition some day i'd like to see some real competition some day some real competition some day some real competition some day happy birthday you're 15 too happy birthday i'm singing this to you yeah yeah yeah yeah happy birthday yeah yeah happy birthday 1 more time happy birthday, again happy happy birthday happy birthday you're 15 too happy birthday i'm singing that to you happy birthday you're 15 too happy birthday i'm singing this to you it's the thought that counts
Number 5
- Kim 9 track 12

- location: Charlottesville
- length: 6:51
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, percussion, vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This starts off slow, sloppy, and repetitive. A couple minutes into it, I got bored and sped it up, which made it marginally more interesting.
I think the lyrics are are reference to the "bring out your dead" segment in Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail.
Lyrics to "Number 5":
this next one is called number 5 because i haven't written it yet ok this one's called number 5 or mister 5 because i get confused ??? song ok i may as well stop right now tango, tango, tango, that's right tango hey hey hey hey hey let's speed it up get it up to pace yeah how many guys are found by number 5 how many dead guys does he think are alive how many guys are found by number 5 how many dead guys does he think are alive hey how many dead guys are found by number 5 how many dead guys does he think are alive how many dead guys are found by number 5 how many does he think are still alive there are different pieces scattered across the road there are different pieces, here's a finger, there ??? a toe there are different pieces scattered across the street there are different pieces ??? how many dead guys will be found by mister 5, hey how many dead guys will he think are still alive, hey how many dead guys will be found by mister 5, hey how many dead guys will he think are still alive and they're different pieces and they're scattered across the road here ??? finger and i ??? toe there are different pieces flying through the air ??? ??? number 5 ??? ??? in the middle ??? one more time how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 how many dead guys will he think are still alive, ??? how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 how many dead guys ??? still alive scattered across the road ??? finger and ??? here is a toe ??? through the air ??? here and there ??? hey how many dead guys does he think are still alive how many dead guys is he dumb enough to pass by how many dead guys does he think are still alive tell how many dead guys is he stupid enough to pass by how many dead guys how many dead guys how many dead guys is he passing by doing his rounds for the city trash clean up doing his rounds for the city just make make me throw up doing his rounds for the city is trash clean up doing his rounds for the city 'cause just make make me throw up how many dead guys does he think are still alive how many dead guys does he pass by how many dead guys are still alive how many dead guys does he pass by how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 how many dead guys does he think are still alive ??? live across the road ??? ear and a toe ??? ear and toe ??? how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 how many dead guys will he think are still alive will he think are still alive hey wooh how many dead guys will be found by number 5 how many dead guys will he think are still alive how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 and how many dead guys will that idiot pass by tell me how many dead guys will be found by number 5, hey how many dead guys will he be fool enough to pass by how many dead guys will be found by mister 5 and how many dead guys will he think are still alive wooh that that that really cheers you up after a happy birthday i know it
Konk Me on the Head

Dumb title, cheesy chords, sloppy playing, bad singing. I must've been tired, and utterly unspired. For that reason, I'm thinking this was recorded the same day as "Sloppy Birthday" and "Number 5".
Lyrics to "Konk Me on the Head":
this is one called konk me on the head, all right? konk me on the head this is konk me on the head this is konk me on the head yeah all right suave konk me on the head ready i guess i am oh ??? yeah yeah yeah... yeah yeah yeah... [scat] konk me on the head this is a real short song don't give me don't give me any ??? about it ??? it's a really short song i'm done, i'm done i'm history and that's it wooh
Lucky 7

More clatter. This time I admitted that I was getting bored. I added multiple cornet parts in an attempt to liven things up. The result is just more noise, lots of noise.
Lyrics to "Lucky 7":
all right that last one was konk me on the head; it was pretty short this one's probably gonna be short because i'm getting bored with this this one is lucky 7 because it's number 7 see i'm really just grabbing for these titles isn't that pretty this is lucky 7 because it's number 7 yee-haw you know i'm just grabbing ??? really yee-haw ??? have ??? i put it on every keyboard ??? i like number 7 and ?? i like number 7 ??? everybody number 7 ??? number 7 ??? ??? number 7 ??? ??? ??? 7 dollar bill that'll get me to heaven if there's a 7 doller bill then i'll get me ??? if there's 7 dollar bill then i'll have a lot of spending if there's 7 dollar bill then i'll ??? and now here's a trumpet player with something to say his name is travis t e and no l cool j yeah wooh and that's travis on the trumpet or a cornet if you want to call it that that was travis on the trumpet or the cornet if you want to call it that that was travis on the trumpet or the cornet if you want to call it that yeah ??? ??? ??? makes you want to eat your food whether it it be vegetables vegetables, yucky yucky yucky yucky ??? so cool we have travis playing on the trumpet he's so good, he's so good, he's so good... we have travis playing on the trumpet he's so good here is travis again on the trumpet here is travis on the trumpet here is travis on the trumpet or the cornet, hey that was travis on the trumpet or the cornet he is playing so good just sounds real good, when you're in the mood travis on the good he is really really really really sounds real good ??? so much ??? too much fun we are swinging to the rhythm we are feeling the beat we are moving our arms and ??? and we're swaying from the head to the feet swaying from the head to the feet swaying from the head to the feet and we're banging the drums [scat]

This was the last thing I recorded before sending the tape to Kim for her birthday. It's mostly talking, with an improvised song in the middle. The chatter is kinda boring, but I kept it because gives a clue as to the recording date.
Lyrics to "Adios Amiga":
i'm done, i'm done that was too much that was an overdose for me we'll have to take it easy on scat-trav for a while all these things i'm breaking the keyboard died the little connector i made it broke so i'm trying to fix it i intend to send this tomorrow so you get it on the 22nd that would be nice and convenient it's time to say adios amiga see you in a while when i have new shoes adios amiga see you in a while when i have new shoes adios amiga see you in a while when i have new shoes adios adios amiga see you in a while when i have new news see you in a while when i have new news la la la la la la la happy birthday la la la happy birthday to you yeah that's it [scat] ok so i've enjoyed talking, ha ha it's quite obvious that i've enjoyed talking i hope you've enjoyed listening i really doubt it and i'm very very extremely utterly disgustingly low on tapes you know right on the side 2 part it says i heart m.w. i was like 4/14/87 that was over a year ago a year and 2 days or 3 days, something like that
