This batch of songs for my cousin Kim was recorded on a single day. It was packaged with five other tapes (covered by Kim 10 and Kim 11). My instructions were to listen to this tape first because the others were so bad. Is this any better? You decide!

I'm pretty sure this song was inspired by a guy from my dad's work (Sam) who got me into UB40. I was probably trying to mimic that light reggae style.
Everything was recording in one attempt, no overdubs. I guess I was serious about being tired of using the dictaphone (see "Adios Amiga"). Unfortunately, I also seem to be out of ideas. This is very repetitive, and the music is lame.
The lyrics are about some sort of neglect. I think the idea was that I felt like I was having to rescue people, but then would get ignored by those people once the rescue was over... until the next crisis. No specific incidents spring to mind.

I was babbling about honors band. This reminds me of the "band camp" references in that teen movie a while ago.
I don't remember which dates honors band was back in 1988. This chatter, and the next song(s) were recorded on the next, day, a Sunday. Several songs later, I say that I'm recording on "Sunday the 8th" which I'm guessing is May 8. Since the songs sound the same and there's no evident break in recording, I think it's safe to assume that this was recorded the same day.

This was my horrible attempt at recreating one of the songs we played in honors band. It's painfully plodding. I butchered it. This is why I don't play many cover songs!

This song was actually the ending for "Chimes of Liberty", sharing the same chord progressions, but developed a "life" of its own. Not much of a life, though, since the music is repetitive and canned. I guess you can call it an "Artificial Life". Heh heh.
Anyway, the lyrics aren't too horrible. They don't sound made up, though, even though I said they were. They're about a genie. A mean genie. I don't know where this idea came from. Maybe the genie wants freedom/liberty and the only way to get it is to wish for music/chimes? I dunno.

This is a silly song about a vampire. I think the idea came from the "stake" reference in the previous song ("Proper Perspective"). First genies, then vampires... I guess I was geeking out that day!
The music is repetitive, but so is the "bite into your neck" theme which keeps going through the vampire's head. Not too bad.

This immediately followed "Clearly not Clarinet"; I don't think I even stopped the tape.
For some reason, I decided to make a "sequel" to "This Year", though the backing rhythms are similar to "Vampire Rock". There's also a bit of "Waiting for a Call" near the middle. I guess I was running out of ideas.
I seemed to know it, because that's what I talked about in the middle. My talking was kinda funny. The solos are sloppy but have some tuneful bits.

This is a long ramble about the tapes I was preparing to send to Kim. The only critical part is the date, which applies to the previous and following songs as well. Aside from that, it's really just lots of gabbing, sometimes funny but mostly dumb. Feel free to skip. I think I was hyper. I kept playing the keyboard in the middle of talking too.
I was being very critical of my cousin's tape-making skills. What a little self-centered, hypocritical snob I was! :) Still, it's kinda funny.

blab like right now i classify this as definitely blabbing all right, i don't blab on those tapes i don't think, i don't think i mean i'm sure in parts of it i get away with a little bit of it i listen to your tape and you're like: oh, paul came over today and i'm like: ok that's great ok another half an hour of this ok this is very supra-critical but i'm just portraying this as i see it and then you go on your keyboard and [scat] and that's good, that's good, great to see you trying but i either write a song out so that it sounds good or i luck out, and i luck out a lot when i say luck out, that means it becomes decent enjoyable to listen, right almost every song that i write is enjoyable to listen except this one right here, listen to this one that's the one exception on the tape all right the others enjoyable but then you come along [scat] with your little rhythms and then you start singing and it's like pretty horrendous it's a lot better than i can do but first of all you're singing other people's songs and then you try to make it, really, really, all right i mean i played i played that, but that's not a singing part but anyways sorry you're great, you're great you talk well, you tell good jokes and um you just need to loosen up i'd say and you can't be like this and this happened today and tomorrow i'm gonna do this and this and you know what, this and this and this as if you're talking on the phone to one of your friends because i don't know what in the world is going on up there and i'm sure you don't know what's going on down here but i don't say, ok, tomorrow i have a test in blaa blaa blaa which i did, though and then i have marching band, oh great, marching band's fun i can incorporate my feelings into it but i'm not gonna say: tomorrow at 3:30 i will be out of school i will go to the cafeteria and there i will see my friends and i'll smile at them and they'll through food at me and i'll try to catch it in my mouth and most of the time it goes up my nose so i sneeze it, it comes out and it sticks all over the floor and then the janitor has to kick me out mr. card gets mad and makes me sit out for most of practice but i don't mind, because i don't like practice anyway no, i don't do that i make it funny and i'll lie, i lie a lot most of the stuff i'll tell you in those 5 are lies i don't like making a big deal about every day life because it it so morbid and you know ok i got that out of my system ok, here's recommendations for your next tape or letter number 1 put a little more of your emotions into it, not the details he This song was supposed to be heard by the entire family. It's pretty pathetic. I had nothing to say, and was kinda confrontational and self-obsessed. Oh well; what's new?
The music starts slow, empty, and boring. At some point the keyboard started dying and speeding up (I don't remember why that happened). I ended up leaving the room at the end. After a while I came back and made the comment about rolly-pollies, which I think were the inspiration for the title.
