Notes
It was 1998 (and early 1999). I was in graduate school in Charlottesville, and becoming disillusioned with the usefulness of some of my courses and fellow students. For me, the highlights of that time were my trips with friends and family. I longed to return to the Pacific Northwest.
Meanwhile, Tripecac was grinding to a halt. I was tired of my Yamaha SY55's memory limitations and the hassles of editing on its tiny LCD. So, I borrowed my Dad's guitar again. Fiddling around with it was more convenient, efficient, and fun than dealing with the SY55. These songs are the result.

Hello, 1998! This was an intro for a song idea that didn't make it onto Trex. Don't worry, it's not a big loss!
Lyrics to "Depths of Time":
all right this one is gonna be lost in the depths of time
Struggle

This starts off very rough, but then settles down into a semi-pleasant rhythm. It's sloppy, and I can't always hear all the words, but it's not bad.
Lyrics to "Trying":
all right here's a gratuitous, spontaneous solo by the way, today is the 22nd of february 1998 trying not to hit the high notes trying just to hit the low stuff trying not to talk to any people trying just to talk to my lone self to my lone self trying not to think really hard yes, trying trying not to play very hard notes trying just to ??? my own lone self trying not to hard ??? to sing the right words i thought i'd try that ??? really see? 2 3 4 1 2 ready go trying too hard to even sing very well i only try to be my own lone self yeah whatever bye

Sometimes it's frustrating being more active than other people. Such as when we have to interact with those other people. Inevitably, the active people end up feeling pressure to do the work of the inactive people. But then we think "why the heck am I bailing this lazy person out?" We end up resenting the other people, and withdraw from them. And since we're more active than most people, we end up withdrawing from most people. We end up hermits. That's the safest route to daily happiness.
Of course, it's also a lonely route, and if our happiness depends on the approval or thanks or entertainment value of other people, then there's a limit to how happy we can be in solitude.
Anyway, the music here is pretty cool. Aggressive, choppy, crisp. I like it!
Lyrics to "I Do the Work":
today is the 20th of march the travis' ides of march the t-ides of march the tides of march the tides of march the tides of march i wash my face and i wash my hands and i wash my head and i wash my feet so where are the girls? and where are my friends? and where is my life? and where is my wife? i rejoice i do my school work i go to bed on time i eat lots of vegetables so where are the girls? and where are my friends? and where is my life? and where is my wife? i play guitar and i try to sing i play these chords i do everything i do a web site and i write stories and i have friends and i go to bed and i eat vegetables and i wash my face and i eat my medicine and i do just about everything

I was making fun at my ineptness on guitar. The ironic thing is that I was better back then than now!
Lyrics to "Negative One Chord Blues":
i only know two chords i only know how to play two chords, two chords i only know three chords i said the other day i only know three chords now i only know two chords now i only know one chord this is called my one chord blues i woke up the other morning and i said i said, yesterday i knew one chord and now i know no chords so i just tap myself in the head 'cause that's all i can do and now i know negative one chords this is called negative -- this is called blues in negative one chords yes i gotta go to school today and i'm gonna stay home and i program a lot and it really, really irritates me moreso than this note didn't irritate you and so i'm irritating because my life is irritated this called my frank zappa negative one chord blues thank you

From the aggression in the guitar, it sounds like I was mad at something. The lyrics match that feeling.
Lyrics to "I Go On":
march 25th 1998 i don't know but i go on i work real hard i don't play at all but i go on i sit in my room i never have fun i sit by myself go for days without seeing on but i go on oh man i can't believe i ???

Salmonilla plus milling equals salmonilling. Okay, pretty weak, I know, but so is the music, so it's a match made in heaven, eh?

Another simple bass melody, no vocals, no energy, no talent. The music is as boring as the title.

- recorded: 1998-04-01
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:20
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I recorded this on April Fool's Day, 1998. Does that make it zany and surprising? No! It's boring, like the rest of the gentle bass melodies on this album.
Lyrics to "April Fools Song":
my april fools song hmm
Same Day
- I Mowed track 13
- recorded: 1998-04-01
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:09
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar, talking

I don't remember what I meant by this. I think someone was blaming me for bad weather. Or something. Don't know. Don't care.
Lyrics to "Can't Undo the Weather":
I know you think you're clever but you can't undo the weather you can't undo the weather you can't undo the weather you can't undo the weather you can't undo the weather I know you think you're clever but you can't undo the weather
Six Ate

- recorded: 1998-0?-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:34
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
The title is a pun on the "sick satan" lyric from IPECAC's "Kiss the Devil" (on Leaping Leper Limousine).
The music is yet another simple bass pattern.
Beautiful Beautiful Man
- Acoustic Picks track 12

A girl who liked me sent my mom a letter saying that I was a "beautiful man". This song was my reaction.
The solos weren't bad. Until the very end. :)
Lyrics to "Beautiful Beautiful Man":
30th of june 1998 do it and do it again for the beautiful beautiful man do it and do it again for the beautiful beautiful man do it and do it again for the beautiful beautiful man do it and do it again for the beautiful beautiful man do it and do it again for the beautiful beautiful man they don't know they don't know they don't know they don't know they don't know what goes inside my head ugh

- recorded: 1998-0?-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:27
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar

This is the final bass melody. It's longer and just as boring as the others. But hooray, they're finally done!
Arpeggio

I guess I felt like my life was in a rut. This song's music and my voice sound very rut-like too. It kind pokes fun at the cliche "you always have your roots".
Lyrics to "Ruts":
it's wednesday i just got back from driving jessica home from colorado across the country saturday night i went to a bowling alley with miro down in williamsburg and then sunday morning i hopped into an airplane to go see jess and sunday, and monday, and tuesday i drove back to charlottesville now it's wednesday and here i am tomorrow i have a meeting with my advisor and decide what i'm going with gloss someday this week my ??? should come this weekend we're gonna go on a bike trip down to southern virginia it should come just got finished watching the godfather on tv actually i rented both of them they were good they were cool but that's all i have to say about that didn't intend to capture my life in a song today but this seemed pretty representative of it, oh yeah oh yeah didn't mean to try to phrase anything elegantly well at least i failed at something this is totally symbolic you can't escape your ruts or your routines all you can do is make them more interesting you always have your ruts you always have your ruts you always have your ruts yes, you always have your ruts you always have your ruts make them good for you you always have your ruts make them work for you you always have your ruts control your ruts control your ruts control your ruts and then control your ruts control your ruts and every once in a while you'll do something unexpectedly beautiful everyone will be surprised

This is the first take of the album's title track. It's based on a multi-meaning pun. I sort of lost the point, though, and had to record a second version in order to get the pun in there.
Lyrics to "I Mowed (1)":
the circumstances for this recording could not be more bizarre all right here we go the 13th of december 1998 um, this is a song that i made up in the car on the way home it has potential but my performance of it does not exhibit such potential i know for a fact i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm old i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm old i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm old i have friends i'm 25 i still have my friends and i'm still alive and i have my girls but they are in pictures i don't have anyone on a daily basis ok there's one thing i can't do and that is sing and play at the same time this one will never make it onto the best of travis tapes this one will never make it onto any best of anything tapes unless i do something really brilliant right now there go my chances and if i keep this up i will miss the beginning of my simpsons episode so i better get some professional air in here by the way, i'm in the bathroom well that's about it and no, it's not it i haven't even gotten to the basis of the song i haven't even gotten to the substance aren't i annyone? 2 3 4 i'm owed by my friends they make me pay the money when we go to the movies or any kinda of restaurant or when we take a trip to williamsburg and of course eat mongolian and promise we'll go to the bookstore but we never do i drive the car but they backseat drive and i take them places and they complain constantly and i do the thinking and i make the plans and i do the talking and i buy the papers and i take resposibility and do the programming and what do they do? they say "travis, work harder" they say "travis, take us better places" they say "travis, pick better movies" they say "travis, better get a grip on yourself because you're looking like you're a little bit worn out" and i make the deals i meet at 11 i buy the coffee and i eat yucky lemons and i eat the pickles and exercise harder and i obstain from fat and i do my homework as soon as it's assigned and i do the specs and i do the perl and i have to be home and i have to program and i do all the boring stuff and i don't have time to play games and watch tv or watch any movies or drink alcohol travis in charge everyone behind him they can throw stones from behind the wall i put up they can walk through the field quickly and smiling and joking amongst themselves and i clear the mines and i lose the legs and i have the boils inside my mind and i can't talk smoothly no time to be kind i can't afford having people eating up any more of my mind i can't afford even thinking about the feminine species or coming up with alternatives to the common cliches ??? said "women are from venus"
I Mowed (2)
- I Mowed track 21

Second, longer version of "I Mowed". This one has the puns in it.
Lyrics to "I Mowed (2)":
13 december 1998 this is a dumb song but the lyrics were witty it's called "i mowed" yes i drive the car and i take them cool places i take them places but they backseat drive i drive the wheels and i make the deals and i do the responsible things and i don't get in trouble but they think i will they say i will fail all my classes 'cause i skip them every time i'm stuck programming every day until pretty late at night and i work really hard and i'm thin as a result and i get my "a"s and i don't have aids so my friends look up not to me but to each other i am the camel i carry the ammo they don't realize that slave boy travis has a pair of eyes and has a little voice somewhere inside him saying: and i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed and i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed my friends owe me money my friends owe me time my friends owe me patience and they owe me respect yes, it's owed i have earned it i work so hard i'm rarely inspired to turn out a tune 'cause i'm working on someone else's little project their own little pastime where is my happiness? well, it's here but nobody sees it they think i'm sick they think i'm wasting away they think i am a twirp they think i'm a failure yes, that was a shambles i know it, i'm cognizant of the decline in my musical proclivity and productivity but that is accepted because i have many other hobbies and i am working on other people's hobbies too and i have some time, some time, some time and i will find more time in the new year in the new year in 1999 just like i did in 1992 when i became mr. productive do i sound mr. mean, mr. nasty, mr. silent, mr. hermit? all those things all the negativity all the negativity will run out it will depart it will leave my system it will leave it, leave it, leave it, leave it... i need to finish my song and then i can go watch the simpsons because that is where i belong in front of the tv absorbing, absorbing, not creating or so i tell myself every single not day but almost every day convince myself that i can be normal and i am normal anyone who claims that they're not normal is just being pretentious and pretentious is very normal so i will say i am very normal but if anyone calls themselves normal, that is also pretentious but even pretending to be aware of the pretentiousness is pretentious in iself so i am pretentious i am the most pretentious person in the world i have the worst sense of humor ever pretentious humor pretentious humor no, i'm not under the influence of any strange medications or entertainment devices such as neural implants or something like that which miro covets every day of his life he wishes he didn't me to provide him entertainment but the fact is that he needs me now he needs me for my camera and my company 'cause i have some inspiration left inside my old, old self and people they owe me and that is the point of this song it's a joke it's called a, um, two words that sound alike homonyms this song is called the homonym song and i need to finish it real quick because the simpsons will be on so anyone my friends they like to ride in my car choose uh chew up my gas and i pay for dinner and i pay for the motels and i pay for the tickets and i buy the games and i buy the books yes, and i buy the cds and i rent the movies and so i am poor i'm owed by my friends owed by my friends and i'm owed my teachers i give them way too much of my time and you know why, it's because i'm 25 years old and my friends are 23 and i'm old and so here's the song it's called i'm owed, i'm owed, i'm owed 'cause i'm old i'm owed, i'm owed, i'm owed 'cause i'm old i'm owed, i'm owed, i'm owed 'cause i'm old i'm owed, i'm owed, i'm owed 'cause i'm old and so i need to earn some dollars so i can find my musical habits and my gaming habits and my reading habits and my web page habits and my nice food habits and my write stories habits and my biking habits and my rollerblading habits and my skiing habits and my singing habits which has a little bit declined well, everyone's got some priorities so anyway i needed to make some money quick so that i could watch my tv habit and maybe movie habit et cetera so i needed money and i had no brains left 'cause i was all stressed out and some say burnt out so i did what came easy i got out the weedeater and my parents' lawn mower and i hit the streets yes, i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed i mowed, i mowed, i mowed 'cause i'm owed and as i was mowin' without my goggles 'cause i tried to pretend to that i didn't need goggles 'cause in the old days i used to wear goggles when i mowed my parents' lawn and there were spider webs all over the place and i didn't want spiders in my eyes or in my face and i used to dress up in jackets and gloves and i used to look ridiculous but i still do now and i am speeding up that's true 'cause i want to get this over with 'cause the simpsons are gonna be on soon so anyway i had this fungus flying up in my face as i manicured everyone's lawns and it got in my eyes and i went to the doctor because my eyes were itchy and red and they had this -- you know how you get sleep when you wake up you have sleep in your eye but it was all the time my contact lenses were floating and the stuff was like this the whites from the eggs it was sick it was condensed and stuck in my eye and the doctor said it's a type of fungus so guess what, i have eye mold eye mold, eye mold, ugh, eye mold 'cause i mowed eye mold, eye mold the nice thing about this song is that i don't even have to sing the lyrics correctly because i'm dealing with homonyms but anyways, 'cause i had eye mold 'cause i mowed eye mold eye mold, eye mold so anyways so i lost my eyes and had to get fitted for new ones there were several different types of eyes they came in these different templates known as molds you know where this is going i got an eye mold, eye mold, eye mold 'cause i had eye mold all right, even of that crap

I was explaining a dorky pun-based song idea. Always looking for the ultimate pun.
Lyrics to "Don't Wanna Care":
today is the 6th of february 1998 i'm not gonna sing; i'm just gonna say i don't wanna care for you it starts off by being i don't wanna c-h-a-r for you so it's talking about i don't wanna write code for somebody like for the boss, ok? the next one is i don't wanna care for you which is like talking to a girl saying i don't wanna care for her i don't wanna care what she thinks and all that stuff and the other one is i don't wanna care for you where it's an adult i don't wanna take of somebody i don't wanna have to take care of my parents i want them to be totally active, helping themselves, and all that stuff because that would be too depressing if i have to care for them so anyway you get 3 puns, all spelled the same way what promise that idea holds, eh?

This is sloppy but tuneful. It's hard to hear what I was singing. Not that it mattered. It's hard enough to play and sing at the same time. Coming up with witty lyrics is even tougher. I think I was singing about the productive value of hermiting.
Lyrics to "Time Alone":
1 2 ready maybe if i had time alone that's what i told myself 3 years ago maybe if i had time to myself ??? maybe if i spend some time alone maybe if i spend time alone maybe if i spend time alone maybe if i spend time alone maybe if i stay in my room maybe if i stay in my room i will bang out a tune maybe if i stay all alone i'll get something done maybe if i stay all by myself i'll ???
