Notes
This album has a bunch of "firsts" but not many good songs.
It starts with an attempt to teach my sister Jessica a particular background vocal. She apparently couldn't get it, and I guess I gave up on the idea of collaborating with her. It wasn't until the next album (Five Dollar Drummer) that I learned how to sing my background vocals.
After ditching my sister, I picked up my Dad's acoustic guitar. This resulted in a tortuous set of guitar and keyboard drum jams. They're awful. Now you know why I haven't chosen the guitar as my primary instrument!
Eventually I got bored with the guitar (or perhaps Dad took it away), so I focused back on the keyboard. I piddled my way through some long, preset-dominated improvs, none of which are any good. I tried my Dad's cornet on one of those songs. Eek. After that, I hopped on the piano, tried to rap, made a phone call, etc. I was all over the place, trying to find an instrumental setup that "clicked".
The album ends with a "jam session" with my Dad. Unlike the opening track with my sister, this was a true musical collaboration, with Dad on the keyboard and me on french horn and percussion. The process and results were so painful that we never did this again, at least not on tape. Maybe someday...
As you can see, there's lots of new instruments and experimentation on this album. I think I was feeling limited by my keyboard's rigid presets and my inability to record multiple passes per song. On the next album (Five Dollar Drummer), I started multitracking, which let me create more complex (and satisfying) songs with lots of instruments, harmonies, etc.
However, Guitarded isn't there yet. It's the awkward precursor, and is of historical interest only. No gems here.
Songs
Trav and Jess Singing

- length: 0:17
- Travis Emmitt - vocals
- Jessica Emmitt - talking

This is a silly intro. I was showing Jessica the correct way to sing "ooh ooh". She wasn't getting it.
This was recorded between 1986-09-10 and 1987-03-16, but I'm not sure when. I'll guess 1987 since that keeps the dates on this album nice and neat.
Lyrics to "Trav and Jess Singing":
and hit it ooh, ooh no ooh, ooh
Guitar Filler 1
- Guitarded track 2
- recorded: 1987-0?-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:07
- Travis Emmitt - acoustic guitar
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
If you thought my keyboard playing was bad... Here's my first recorded noodlings on guitar. In fact, it's the best of my recorded noodlings.
And what do I play? The stupid "fight song" again?!? Get over it, Trav!!!
The date was some time between 1986-09-10 and 1987-03-16. Mathematically, it was more likely to be in 1987, so I'll pick that year as my guess.

This is a continuation of "Guitarded 1". As if those 72 seconds of stammered guitar noodling (with a brain-dead keyboard drum accompaniment) weren't enough. Collect 'em all.

This is for the legions of fans who are clamoring for yet another guitar and faux-drum jam. Ugh. I told you my guitar playing was rough! It just took you 4 songs to believe me. Right? Hello? Are you still there?
Lyrics to "Guitarded 4":
ah, yuck this really does really stink 1, 2, 3, 4 this is driving me nuts let's try it again [scat]
Guitarded 5

Yay! Last one! After this we can get on with the glorious guitar-free stuff, which sound like absolute gems in comparison.
This one has the distinction of having no connection between the guitar and the keyboard drums in the background. Too much fiddling around with the mic, too little actual playing.
Lyrics to "Guitarded 5":
??? here we go i just have to [scat] ugh um, sorry ??? ok we're all warmed up or at least i am ready, 1, 2 2, 3 2, 3 2, 3 2, 3 all right this is really stinky
Testing 1-4-3

- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- other names: Testing
- length: 0:03
- Travis Emmitt - talking

I'm guessing this was recorded on the same day as the next song.
Lyrics to "Testing 1-4-3":
testing 1 4 3
Warm Up 2
- Guitarded track 10
- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 1:20
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is the instrumental intro to "Bossanova Bunch". I guess the only interesting thing about it is how long I held that one chord. Fascinating.
Bossanova Bunch
- Guitarded track 11
- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 5:14
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This is the first (and shortest) of four long keyboard improvs. The preset rhythms dominate, making this sound very cheesy and boring. Better get comfortable with it, because there's over 45 minutes of this stuff on this album.
First Dance Blues
- Guitarded track 12
- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 12:01
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I'm guessing I recorded this the same day as "Bossanova Bunch". In fact, it was probably the second song of the "bunch". I'm guessing it was shortly before or after my first school dance.
It's really long, with not many changes. When I finally do play keyboard with my right hand, it sounds labored and annoying. I almost wish this were 100% presets, 0% Travis.
Arpeggio Attack
- Guitarded track 13
- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 12:05
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
Another long improv. The arpeggios don't really "attack" until about 3 minutes into it. And they sound more like smurfs than an attacking army. There really isn't anything aggressive about this music.
Take One
- Guitarded track 14
- recorded: 1987-03-16
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 14:56
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, cornet, vocals
This is the final long improv on this album. It's pretty lame, with sick-sounding cornet and a long autobiographical rant/rap towards the end. Also, part of the melody tried to rip off a popular song (which I can't place), which is annoying.
At the very end, it sounds like I walked away from the keyboard (with the rhythms running) in order to let the tape run out. So I was bored even when recording it.
Note: I'll probably have to censor this before uploading the mp3.
Lyrics to "Take One":

Indian Piano
- Guitarded track 15
- recorded: 1987-??-??

- Travis Emmitt - piano

Here's an attempt at making a piano sound "tribal". Hmmm.
Christian Rap
- Guitarded track 16
- recorded: 1987-??-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 2:31
- Travis Emmitt - vocals
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This brief chant makes fun of Christian rap. Talk about an easy target... Still, it completely misses the mark, making itself look stupid. Luckily, I "disguised" my voice, so that I could emerge with my reputation intact. Yeah. Whatever.
The beat-boxing is pathetic. I had actually overwritten it on the original tape, but discovered it on the same tape as Kim 11.
Lyrics to "Christian Rap":
christian rap, it sounds like [clap] you can buy our taste at sears christian rap, it sounds like [clap] it will break your inner ears noah, moses, the 3 kings are playing with their ding-a-lings listening to christian rap tastes like [laugh] ok [scat] christian rap, it sounds like [scat] you can buy our things at sears christian rap, it sounds like [scat] it will break your inner ears moses, noah, the 3 kings are playing with their ding-a-lings oh christian rap, it sounds like [scat] [scat] christian rap, it sounds like [scat] you can buy our things at sears christian rap, it sounds like [scat] you can buy [scat] 1 a 2 a 3 a 4 [scat] hi guys [scat]
Waiting for Ian to Call Back
- Guitarded track 17
- recorded: 1987-10-22
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 4:15
- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This song is notable for its inclusion in "Settlement of Southern Africa", which was a video I made for History Day in April 1988. Actually, it was a sped-up version that I included ("Waiting for a Call (2)").
This song sounds much cooler sped up, especially when we get to the main melody, at 1:15. This is probably the first almost-catchy song I wrote.
Lyrics to "Waiting for Ian to Call Back":
this is a little song it's called "waiting for ian to call back" waiting for a call
Where's That Buzz?
- Guitarded track 18
- recorded: 1987-10-22
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 0:02
- Travis Emmitt - talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
This was probably recorded the same day as "Waiting for Ian to Call Back".
Lyrics to "Where's That Buzz?":
hey? where's that buzz? it's gone
Take-off on a Simple Melody
- Guitarded track 19
- recorded: 198?-??-??
- location: Charlottesville
- length: 5:35
- Travis Emmitt - percussion, french horn, talking
- Dave Emmitt - Casio CT-310, talking
- mp3: download listen locally (flash player)(HTML5 player)
I tried jamming with my Dad, who also plays lots of instruments. He played my keyboard and I played percussion (a collection of pots and pans) and french horn I think we used two passes to record all the tracks; how could I play percussion and horn at the same time? Regardless, the results are pretty awful.
This was on a tape labeled "1988" (right before "The Real Stuff"), so I'm guessing it was recorded in late 1987 or early 1988.
Lyrics to "Take-off on a Simple Melody":
trav: i'll tell you when to go ok this is our song and it's called "take-off on a simple melody" and this is dad and i and dad: this is me and i trav: don't, don't and and and he has the simplest part and if he messes it up then don't look at me ok, now first of all ??? this is another try he messed up last time ok, ready?
