I was back in the Pacific Northwest, and very happy. It had taken me four days to drive to across the country to Bellingham. My next step was to look for an apartment. I finally found one in the best location in town, but had to stick around for a few days to finalize things.

Meanwhile, I explored the area on foot and snuck into the college's practice rooms. I recorded the first several piano improvs on the same day that I recorded "Marathon".

After I secured the apartment, I drove north up the Alcan to Alaska. I visited Seward (where I hiked Mount Marathon), and then, while on the road to Homer, had an interesting idea: I played back "Marathon" on the car radio and sang along to it, recording with the dictaphone. The result is "Days Like These".

These were some of the happiest days of my life. I had a job, a place to stay, and an entire summer vacation in front of me. I was travelling, meeting people, and making music all at the same time. It really doesn't get much better than that.
