Track List
Notes
Here are my favorite songs using the Casio CT-310, which is the keyboard I used back in the late 1980s.
I've arranged the songs in chronological order, so the first few are a bit rough.
Well, come to think of it, so are the last few.
And the ones in between.
Songs
I Beat Her
- Casio Picks track 1
- Eye Beater track 1
- recorded: 1986-09-10

- Travis Emmitt - Casio CT-310, vocals

This is the first recording I have of myself on my Casio CT-310. I recorded it in the summer of 1986, when I was 13. My cousin might have earlier recordings (which I mailed to her), but until I hear them again, they don't count.
I was sick of other boys my age always bragging about how awesome they were. So I made fun of them by pretending to brag about beating my sister in basketball. This is a joke, because Jessica was 3 years younger (10) and almost never played basketball. My song jokes about her having her "hands tied behind her back" while I beat her. Yeah! Go, me! I'm awesome!
Seriously, it's neat to see glimpses of subtle, insightful humor at that age. I certainly was a clever little kid. Yeah! Go, me! I am the greatest!!!
;)
Lyrics to "I Beat Her":
i beat her, with her hands behind her back i beat her, with her hands behind her back i beat her, fair and square, i beat her oh yes i beat her uh-huh that's right, yes, i, yes, i beat her beat her, beat her, beat her, beat her, beat her beat her, yes i beat her oh i beat her, yes i beat her with her hands behind her back, i beat her oh with her hands behind her back, i beat her tied behind her back, behind her back, behind her back fair and square, i beat her, oh yes i beat her really fair, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, i beat her oh yes, have you ever beaten somebody as good as her? no you haven't, no you haven't have you ever beaten somebody as good as her? no you haven't, no you haven't she's the best, i was the best, now i am the worst; that doesn't make any sense ha ha! oh yes, we're jammin' she is the best but now i am she is the best but now i am she was good, she was so good but now i am the best best best best best best best best best best best best best best best best oh yes i beat her with her hands behind her back, oh yes, i beat her and that's the best i can do, really it is, truly i mean, i beat her, oh yes i beat her oh yeah i beater yay, i won!

This is the self-mocking sequel to "I Beat Her". It uses a simple blues progression, and has some improvised bits.
This is the first song that uses a fake British accent. Yum. The funny thing is that I was affecting the "-a" suffix five years before I ever heard The Fall, who ended up becoming one of my favorite bands of all time!
Lyrics to "Life of a Basketball Champ":
a 1, a 2, a 1 2 3 hit it 2, 3, 4 life of a basketball champ, champ life of a basketball champ, champ life of a basketball champ, champ life of a basketball champ, woo! i don't ever madden and stomp 'cause i'm in the life of a basketball champ, champ life of a basketball champ, champ i don't ever madden and stomp life of a basketball champ champ, champ like pac-man! life of a basketball champ life of a basketball champ life of a basketball champ life of a basketball-a champ, a ball-a-champ life of a basketball-a champ, ahh life of a basketball-a champ, ahh life of a basketball-a champ life of a basketball life of a basketball life of a basketball champ champ champ of a champ, of a champ, of a champ, champ of a champ, of a champ, of a champ i might mope and i might cry i might pout and i might die 'cause i'm in the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ life of a basketball-a champ, champ life of a basketball-a champ, woo! life of a basketball-a champ life of a basketball-a champ a life of a basketball, woo! the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a-champ the life of a basketball life of a basketball life of a basketball-a champ, a champ the life of a basketball life of a basketball life of a basketball-a champ the life of a basketball-a champ the life the life of a basketball-a champ i might mope and i might die i might pout and i might cry 'cause i'm in the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ the life of a basketball-a champ, like pac-man the life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ the life of a basketball-a champ, like pac-man life of a basketball life of a basketball life of a basketball life of a basketball life is a basketball life is a basketball oh life is a basketball and a net life is a basketball and a net, and a net oh yeah, no other sport will do only basketballs life is a basketball and a net not a tennis racket not a soccer ball not a golf ball not a baseball not a baseball mitt or a bat life of a basketball champ, a-ball-a champ life is a baseball well, that'll come up next week 'cause i don't have anything more to say no really, i don't but, let's end with this oh yes a life of a basketball-a champ, a-ball-a champ life of a basketball is wonderful tonight like pac-mac!

Wow! Chipmunks! Pretty funny and catchy.
This song (and the next few) are pretty ancient.
Lyrics to "Life Is Precious":

The intro for this is long and sloppy, with slow solos and lots of fiddling. When the vocals finally drag themselves out of bed, the energy level increases but the sloppiness still spoils the fun. The recording quality is also all over the place; I think I knocked over the mic while recording.
From my notes to Kim:
10:05pm Wrote it yesterday waiting 2 hrs for school to start. A couple mistakes. You'll like this one.
Like it? Not really.
Lyrics to "This Year":
this one's to kim or to tony or to jim it's all balogna hey pretty catchy, isn't it? i know this girl she's beautiful to see and we used to be friends - her and me just friends, that's all; no more could we be and now we're less than that, you see i see her every once in a while she might say "hi"; we only smile we both have taken our different styles from her friendship, i'm exiled she's the best looking girl in the whole 9th grade a year ago i had it made but it's no use continuing that silly crusade we can see that our friendship has long since decayed

This is a musical remake of "Land of Hunger", which was first written around 1982.
From my note to Kim:
My voice cracks in the middle of it, so I start talking.
The spoken ad-lib ended up being one of my favorite parts! Thank god for puberty. :)
I like the energy on this track. Some of the singing is kinda lucky, too.
Lyrics to "Land of Hunger (2)":

This epic reggae rap has "yikes" written all over it. My fake Jamaican accent was horrible! I admire my persistence, however. :)
My notes to Kim say:
I think you'll like it if you can understand the lyrics.
The lyrics are kinda insightful (when you get beyond the accent). They're about the malaise of mediocrity, trying to find a skill to make yourself stand out. The "character" in the song was a reggae star whose only skill was music. When he was performing, he got respect, but outside of the context of music, he was a nobody.
Is this autobiographical? Not really. I'm sure I had teenage dreams of meta-stardom (I wrote stories about it at the time), but I never actually believed that my music would make me "cool".
For me, making music has always been something I do for fun. It's childish. Like playing games. Or watching TV. A nice benefit is that I can re-experience my "fun" later (since I record most of what I play).
Who cares about being "cool" when you're having fun? And how can you have fun when you're concerned with being cool? Coolness is in the eyes of the beholders, anyway. And I don't really care about other people's perceptions of me. As you can probably tell by now. What matters is that I am happy with how I spend my time.
Lyrics to "Guy in the Middle":
i want you to hear de riddem and i want you to feel the beat i want you to pick up your body and i want you to move your feet because the reggae rule and the reggae rock and the reggae cool all around the block singing reggae, reggae, oh no music like the reggae the reggae, reggae, no music like the reggae we be the rastaman we boastin' reggae walking down the street finding people to meet we be the rastaman we be the iyaman we be the some folks call us the higher man girl, i wish i could know you to walk with you as a friend for you to cling to in times of pain but all i am is just another guy caught up in a silly life sort of like a game i boast no sophistication but no ultimate retardation i'm just a guy in the middle cannot solve this riddle reggae reggae all that's cool about me reggae all that's cool about me who is it that said "what you see is what you get"? The music is very simple. The vocals are repetitive but kinda catchy.

This was the eve of my 15th birthday. It sounds like I was pretty excited. Being alive is cool.
The suicide references are a bit cliche. I guess teenagers think a lot about mortality? Or at least artsy-fartsy ones like me? Oh, how very "emo" of me. Snort.
The solos are lame, but the singing is heartfelt and funny, expecially towards the end.
Lyrics to "Will You Believe":
will you believe will you believe will you believe me will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow will you believe i'll give in to sorrow will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow will you believe ??? tomorrow oh will you believe oh will you believe oh will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow will you believe i'll give in to sorrow will you believe will you believe i'll be 15 years old will you believe, will you believe will you believe, will you believe will you believe will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow will you believe i haven't given in to sorrow will you believe i'm still around today to sing this song however long and that's a long long time: a decade and a half i've alive 15 years i'm proud i'm here today to sing this song to have my way to be alive this song 15 i'm 15 oh will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow oh will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow oh will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow i haven't given in to my sorrow i have constrained it, restrained it rearranged my intentions will you believe 15 if you have confidence in yourself will you believe i made it this far will you believe i'm alive to sing will you believe not very hard to be this old if you have no problems at all but you do and so do i and that's why i had to try not to give in to myself, give in to doubts give in to myself, give in to doubts so that's why i am singing that's why i keep my ears from ringing will you believe 15 tomorrow will you believe i haven't given in to sorrow will you have not given in will you believe i'm alive and sinning yeah i know we all had our doubts that i would turn 15 but here i am and singing will you believe, will you believe will you believe i'll be 15 will you believe, will you believe will you believe i'll be 15 and next year i'll be 16 and then i'll be 17 then 18 then 19 and 20 and on and on if i keep my mind from sorrow i'll be alive tomorrow forever more i won't open that door i won't jump into the end i won't turn that bend proud to be 15 i'm so proud to be 15 will you believe i am 15 i still got a long ways to go will you believe i am 15 there's a lot of stuff i don't know got a whole life ahead of me will you believe i will be 15 will you believe will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow and i'll keep on singing my songs ought keep me alive without them i won't thrive my songs keep from dying and they keep from from crying will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow a year older then i was today, ooh that doesn't rhyme but i don't give a hoot will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow the song's almost over so just wait will you believe i'll be 15 and proud of it that's 14 years of living straight oh god this song doesn't earn a star will you believe i'll be 15 tomorrow will you believe i haven't given into sorrow will you believe will you believe me believe me good luck on your exams

This is a moody story about domestic violence. It's not autobiographical in the slighest. I probably wrote it for a girl I knew.
I like the texture. It's very subdued, and whispery. Atypical and kinda cool!
Lyrics to "Full House":
this is called full house and this is take one it has very few lyrics but i like it i like the idea in the middle of the day the dog is chasing the cat who is chasing the mouse sister packs her bags and asks for the car so she can move out of the house mother and father are screaming at each other and suddenly a pot smashes against the wall and brother is so drunk that he's lying in the corner of the hall so she cries she cries when she can't go to johnny's house all because of a mouse it was the middle of june and i was stuck up in my room there was screaming in the hall and i didn't like it at all dishes were hitting the floor someone pulled a knife from the kitchen drawer the yells of hatred turned to anguish then to horror and to fright so i opened my window and escaped into the night so she cries she cries when she can't go to johnny's house all because of a mouse it was the middle of june and i was stuck in my room there was screaming in the hall i didn't like it at all dishes were hitting the floor someone pulled a knife from the kitchen drawer the yells of hatred they turned to anguish then to horror and to fright so i opened my window and escaped into the night so she cries she cries when she can't get a ride to johnny's house to stay stay in this house there's got to be another way it's a full house we can do just as well without her it's a full house she hates it when her parents doubt her she wants them to show some confidence in her as a human being she wants them to notice her to love her but it's a full house it can operate as well without her it's a full house and her parents always doubt her they always fight on into the night they always battle they always fight it was the middle of june and i was stuck up in my room there was screaming in the hall and i didn't like that at all dishes were hitting the floor someone pulled a knife from the kitchen drawer the yells of hatred they turned to anguish then to horror and to fright so i opened my window and escaped into the night so she cries she cries when she can't get a ride to johnny's house to johnny house all because of a little mouse they fight into the night in the middle of the day the dog is chasing the cat who is chasing the mouse sister packs her bags and asks for the car so she can move out mother and father are screaming at each other and suddenly a pot smashes against the wall my brother is so drunk that he's lying in the corner of the hall they fight into the night horror and fright they fight into the night cries of fright they fight into the night cries of fright they fight into the night cries cries into the night cries into the night they fighting through the night fighting through the night fighting through the night so she cries when she can't get a ride to go to johnny's house all because of a little mouse they fight

This is a long, slow, melodic song which starts as an instrumental. It sounds very cool coming after the monotony of the previous songs. It was recorded late at night (11:52pm according to my notes).
The lyrics again revisit the themes of teen angst and "Jah". I was listening to lots of reggae at the time. The funny (but not so ha ha) thing is that this song sounds nothing like reggae. It's more like semi-cheesy, jazzy slow rock. I really like the vibe, though.
Lyrics to "Confession":
with every loss, there is a gain when tears are falling like the falling rain when you find there is no way to ease the pain you've got to learn to play the game you've got to get yourself together just got to pull yourself together you've got to move yourself together you've got to force yourself together it's for the good of you, it's for the good of all it's to show your love, your love for jah confess your sins, tell me what you saw and he'll forgive your every flaw just get yourself together just pull yourself together you've got to move yourself together and you've got to force yourself together you've got to get yourself together just pull yourself together you've got to move yourself together you've got to force yourself together

This is a silly song about a vampire. I think the idea came from the "stake" reference in the previous song ("Proper Perspective"). First genies, then vampires... I guess I was geeking out that day!
The music is repetitive, but so is the "bite into your neck" theme which keeps going through the vampire's head. Not too bad.
Lyrics to "Vampire Rock":
i was walking down the corner of a moonlight street and all these silly people came out and started to mingle and made my teeth thingle and i started to get thirsty for some blood [scat] it's a vampire rock it's a vampire rock it's a vampire rock this is a vampire rock rock it all night rock it all night sucking all night sucking all night i bite into your neck bite into your neck bite bite bite bite bite bite bite bite bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck i'm a vampire uh it's a vampire rock i'm a vampire and i want to suck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck i'm a vampire ??? vampire rock i'm a vampire and this is a rock bite into your neck hey bite into your neck hey bite into your neck hey bite into your neck want to bite into your neck hey bite into your neck hey bite bite into your neck hey bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to ahhhhhhhh hey girl, what you doing out here in the middle of the night while you're at it, just tell me your blood type bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck hey girl, what you doing on the street what kind of people do you expect to meet want to bite into your neck, ooh want to bite into your neck don't run from me, don't run from me you shouldn't be scared of me want to bite into your neck want to bite into your neck just come back here girl i want to see something what kind of necklace do you have on bite into your neck what do you want exactly walking around in the street at night bite into your neck bite into your neck i'm sorry bite into your neck what kind of necklace is that bite into your neck oh just tell me bite into your neck hey lemme undo that for you don't run come here now give me a kiss bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck i'm a vampire this is vampire rock i'm a vampire and i want to suck vampire, oh vampire bite into your neck bite into your neck want to bite into your neck bite your neck bite your bite your neck where did you get that little cross you evil double-crosser, i'm a big city boss where did you get where did you get please i'm asking for mercy i'm sorry i tried to make an attempt to bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your bite into your neck bite into your neck bite into your neck i want bite into your neck bite into your little tender juicy bloody neck

This is the first "Scat-Trav" song. It has a solid melody and (laughable) attempts at harmony. I have no idea how the title fits with the lyrics.

I wrote these lyrics for this music, but later loaned them to IPECAC for "Apostrophe Song" (for which Jon wrote the music). There's lots of energy here, and several catchy moments. This is one of my favorite songs on the album, and was an easy pick for title track.
There's a note on the lyrics sheet indicating that they were written September 1988. This is when IPECAC was in full swing.

Hmm. Teenage angst. That's something new. Not much improvisation here, but the writing is solid.
There are several dates associated with this song, on the lyrics sheet, tape cover, and mentioned in some chatter. Pinning down a recording date has been quite a challenge, and I'm still not sure about it.
The lyrics sheet has three dates listed on it: 1989-01-02, 1989-01-18, and 1989-01-24. I think it's safe to assume that the earliest date represents the day I started writing the lyrics. The others could have been days that I updated the lyrics, either before or after the recording. Or maybe one of them represents the recording date itself.
Meanwhile, this song is the first track on a tape labeled "1988-1989". This would imply that it was recorded in 1988. However, that doesn't make sense if the lyrics weren't composed until 1989. Since the lyrics' dates are more precise than the table label, I'll trust them instead, and will assume that the "1988-1989" was an inaccurate label which I added later.
We have one more clue. "Final Kim Chatter" was recorded on 1988-01-21, and mentions that I recorded a song "yesterday" called "I Need a Little Help". That's probably just another name for this song, which would mean that this song was recorded on 1988-01-20. Of course, it's possible that I was referring to a different version of the song, although I doubt it, since no other recording exists, and this is the sort of song that I would have kept.
For now, my best guess is that I started writing the lyrics on 1989-01-02, edited them on 1989-01-18, recorded the song on 1989-01-20, and then updated its lyrics once last time on 1989-01-24, which may have been the day I recorded the final mix of "We're Heathen".
Lyrics to "The Time Will Come":
CHORUS: the time will come for me to be perfect the time will come for me to make no mistakes the time will come when i say all the right things they day will come when i'm awake VERSE: don't let me decide on something something that will hurt you just stop me while i'm thinking you'll never like what i do don't let me get out of hand you might have to use a little force don't get me go too far astray just keep me on the course CHORUS: the time will come for me to be perfect the time will come for me to make no mistakes the time will come when i say all the right things they day will come when i'm awake BRIDGE: i need a little help and someday i'll be perfect maybe i need jump start just to get me going forward need a little help someday i'll surprise them all maybe i need jump start just to get me going but i need a little help first VERSE: don't let me dig my own grave you're only here to help me don't let me lose the sight of day you're only here to guide me someday i'll be perfect someday i'll have no faults at all someday i'll be completely changed but i'll need a little overhaul CHORUS: the time will come for me to be perfect the time will come for me to make no mistakes the time will come when i say all the right things they day will come when i'm awake but i need a little help first i need a little help first [whistling] i need a little help first

This is what happens if you don't say your prayers.
Seriously, though, this is one of my favorite songs on this album. It's got tons of energy, relatively tight keyboard parts, and better harmonies than anything I had recorded so far. I even like the "descent into Hell" bit at the end.
This is the full version of the song. There's a "simpler version" on Kim 13 (recorded 1988-01-21) that I sent to my (very religious) cousin. This full version adds vocal overdubs, and was probably recorded a few days later. My best guess is the 1988-01-24, since that appears to be the last day that I updated the lyrics for "The Time Will Come", and I tended to work on songs in clumps back then.
Lyrics to "We're Heathen":
INTRO: get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready here we go, go this is experience that is more scary than a rollercoaster it's just about the worst experience in the world, the world, the world, the world let's hit it, let's hear it, let's hear it let's hear it, let's ??? worst experience in the world oh god i'm scared [screaming] we're heathen, we're heathen ... heathen, heathen, heathen, heathen ... This sounds like martial music. It has a decent melody. I don't remember why I called it "HN Filler". What's the "HN" mean???

This is my original version of "Maybe", which I recorded with IPECAC and then later as Tripecac.
This version includes horribly out of tune singing, excruciatingly bad guitar playing, and cheesy keyboard drums. Enjoy!
Lyrics to "Maybe (demo)":
