Hey guys! As you can see, I gave The Tempe Times a facelift. It should now be easier to use. I also updated the archives, and added a search form to it.
Yesterday I added entries I-L to the IPR Encyclopedia [link at the top of page], using a new style. I've decided that I don't like the new font; I much prefer Times New Roman, so I'll either switch back to that, or let the font face default to whatever the user has specified in his browser. However, I still haven't made up my mind about whether the colored text actually improves the look of the pages. I wanted to make different sources stand out, but it seems to be a little cheesy-looking to me now. It's trivial for me to change the font and colors back to their defaults, but before I do, I want to know what you guys think.
Later!

By the way, has anyone gotten FrontPage 2000 yet? I am getting a little tired of FrontPage 98's bugs and the way it fiddles with my nice and neat html. However, FP2K is $149, so I want to know if it really improves over FP98.

hi everybody,
i just spent a frustrating half hour at tripod, trying to update my ipr gallery. i finally got my new mac and was psyched to get back to work. i have lots of images to add to Trudge, but tripod seems to have locked me out of their homepage builder. no matter what i do, i keep ending up back at the welcome page there. trav, or anyone, if you know of another free webspace provider or a way to get into the new (i guess) tripod pagebuilder, please email me!!
anyway...
rhonda, i was with ethan port recently, and he didn't mention anything about a reunion. i haven't spoken with bruce in quite a few months, so i should soon...and i'll post any info i get.
aaron, i'll check with ethan and bruce about videos and such. i have some stuff, but no good way of making copies. plus, i'd like to check with them that it's okay first. maybe one of them would like to do something in the form of a video release. one thing i have spoken with both guys about, is the rerelease of savage republic cds, which should happen...i just don't know when :o(
trav, long time no speak. hope to hear from you soon.

[Bruce posted this today on the Big Takeover mailing list. -- Travis]
Subject: New SCENIC album
Hello Big Takeover list,
A couple days ago Jack let me know that someone was wondering about the new SCENIC album so I thought I'd log in and post an update for those who may be interested.
We started recording the basic tracks for "The Spheres" in Los Angeles back in September, with several further sessions since then. As most of the band live in Los Angeles and I live in Arizona, and since the end of the year is our busy time at Independent Project Press I wasn't able to get back to L.A. to work on the record as much as I would've liked. But I'm planning several trips back in January, so we should be able to complete the laying down of tracks soon. Then we'll have the final mix to do, which I hope to have the financing for by sometime in February.
One reason it's taken so long for this album to come about is that World Domination Recordings, the label we'd licensed "Acquatica" to, and who had first rights on our next album, was slowly petering out over the last year and a half, and they finally bit the dust in May of '99. I've spent the last six months attempting to get statements and royalties due the band from their accountants and attorneys and I've been assured that what's owed the band will be forthcoming as soon as they can figure out the mess that was left of the accounts and contracts. We'd been counting on that money to get into the studio to record, and we finally decided to go ahead and foot the bill for the recording ourselves since it was becoming obvious that waiting around any longer for it to come from World Dom would be foolish. So we're proceeding as we can. That ad I placed earlier in the year was a bit optimistic. Jack always asks me if I'd like to advertise and I always do want to support the BT, so since I didn't have anything else to advertise at the time I thought I'd let people know something new was coming from SCENIC since it had been so long since the last album.
As for the music on this new album, it was originally inspired by being asked several years back to contribute to Darla Records' Bliss-Out Series. We started working on some things that were a bit more ambient and improvisatory, eventually recording 5 or 6 pieces on 8-track in early 1998. As things turned out, Darla was busy with other projects at the time, so the 8-track recordings didn't get released. We decided to focus on writing more material in that vein since it had opened up an interesting area of exploration for us and by early '99, since we'd been working on the material for awhile we decided it would benefit from being re-recorded in a "proper" studio. You could say that some of the material is kind of like SLOWDIVE meets PINK FLOYD, and one song (which we wrote 2 days before entering the studio) sounds a bit like HAWKWIND meets STEREOLAB. I suppose these descriptions will intrigue some people on the list and repulse others, but hey, WE like what we've done and in the final analysis I'd have to say that's the most important thing. In listening to what we've recorded so far I think I can safely say that even though I mention the above references, there's really nothing else out there that sounds quite like what we've done and that suits me just fine. Besides, I listen to our music more than anything else -- that's the main reason I do music, because there's something that we can create that I don't hear anywhere else. And I guess I need that -- it's like breathing clean air or drinking pure water, the body needs it. As a creative person doing music I can't understand the musicians (some of whose music I love) who say in interviews that they never listen to their records once they've recorded them. I'm very grateful for these people that they've made their music (one example that comes to mind is Neil Halstead of SLOWDIVE / MOJAVE 3) but I just cannot understand how they can create something so incredible and then never listen to the records again. I don't get it, I'm sorry, I just don't.
But I digress... I'm very much looking forward to getting the new SCENIC recordings done and out, and seeing and hearing what others think of the work. We've re-recorded several of the 8-track pieces on 24-track and added several new pieces. We've got 10 tracks we're working on, average length is 8-9 minutes apiece, with the longest almost 19 minutes. Needless to say, they won't all fit on one CD so we'll probably save a few pieces back for eps, compilation tracks, etc. There are some pretty interesting alternate versions of a few songs, and we may release some of the 8-track versions on limited edition ep releases. There are a couple small UK labels who are interested, but we still need to see how things develop. We've one guest on the record so far, HAROLD BUDD came in and added piano to one short (5 minutes) ambient piece called "Under A Wing." He was a joy to work with and it looked like he had a great time the day he came to the studio.
A couple other developments which might be of interest to BT readers -- we've been in touch with a Greek label who want to put together a SAVAGE REPUBLIC box set, which we are currently negotiating the licensing agreement for. They want to put the four studio albums plus the "Trudge" ep onto 3 CDs (which will barely fit), then have a 4th CD of "rarities," for which I'm currently going thru hours of rehearsal tapes to see what I can find. I feel like the live recordings have been done enough, and there's a lot of "work in progress" that to me is more interesting anyway. In addition to the box set I think we can see the four studio albums being re-released on CD here individually after the box comes out. We've also licensed an SR track to K-Tel, believe it or not, for a the first volume of a double CD compilation series called "Gimme Indie Rock" which will be released in the Spring. We're also talking to them about the possibility of Independent Project Press printing Discfolio covers for the comp, which could be an interesting thing. I'm also starting to conceptualize a project for later in the year that would be an IPR 20th Anniversary Compilation, with tracks from most (if not all) releases on the label. I'm presently going thru the many demo tapes I've received over the years from numerous bands and hope to compile a CD of previously unreleased material. This would include unreleased songs from many IPR bands as well as some other artists who approached me about releases but for one reason (time) or another (money) a release never materialized.
Hope this info is of interest to a number of you on the list, and I'll be happy to try to respond to any further questions anyone may have given available time.
Best wishes for the new year,
BRUCE LICHER

whay back in the late 80's (possibly 89) I heard a "live" recorded song played on KXLU radio here in l.a. by Savage republic. I believe it was called Tabula Rasa, all insturmental except for the singer at one or two points in the song keeping time by saying "1,2,3,4"
I love the song in it's live format but can't figure out if it's the right song and to which this album contains this song.
can anyone try to help me figure out whatthis needle in the haysack song is and on what album it is on?
thanks...and email me if you can if you know.

In response to Steve's question about the live version of Tabula Rasa, at first I thought it might have been on the Live Europe '88 CD, as we played that song on that tour. However, on checking I see it wasn't included. The only thing I can think of is that it may have been from the live tape recorded at the band's final performance in Claremont, California. Ethan Port arranged for the show to be recorded with an 8-track mobile studio and a video was to be released years ago by Atavistic. Never got completed, though, and I believe Ethan still has the original tapes. He could very well have passed on some of those recordings to KXLU, which may be what you heard. As I recall there was some good stuff from that show. Ethan planned to release a CD of the recordings and perhaps he still will someday.
Regarding an "official" IPR web site -- it's in the planning stages for later this year. I've secured a domain name (independent project.net) and am starting to talk with a web designer in L.A. with whom I may be working to design the site. I'll definitely keep you posted as more details are available, and once it's up and running we'll get a link happening between the IP site and this one.
Something which may also be of interest -- some recent design and printing work of mine (including the Stereolab 7" and a Harold Budd Discfolio amongst other items) will be included in an exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City. It's the first National Design Triennial, titled "Design Culture Now," featuring the work of 83 designers, architects, artists, and other creative people working today. It's quite an honor to be included, and I'll be traveling to NY for the opening on Tuesday, March 7th, 2000.
Hello Paul -- I'll probably see you in March, and thanks for informing folks about the Acquatica vinyl. We've pressed 800 copies to start, and they're going fast. I'll be sure to keep Parasol stocked as long as copies are available...

Glad you like the site, Kara.
Anyway, regarding Savage Republic... You might want to try calling IPR and ordering from them directly. I ordered a ton of stuff from them mail-order a couple years ago and hopefully they still have something going.
I've seen their CDs in online stores, but not too often.
I just checked all three of these sites, though, and none have any Savage Republic CDs. :(
Ahh, here we go:
- Live 1981-1983 10" $30.95
- Live Trek '85 CD $25.95 -- I recommend this album
- Tragic Figures vinyl $15.95
- Tragic Figures "Digi" CD $32.95
I've ordered from CDEurope two or three times. Their CDs were really expensive, and sometimes they didn't actually have what was listed. However, it's the best online bet so far.
You should try http://www.parasol.com (I don't have time to search them right now - gotta run to a dinner engagement), but I've ordered from them a couple of times and they have a good IPR selection.
Bruce Licher (IPR dude) says he's working on an "official" IPR site, something with mail order capability. That will be *so* cool to see.
My IPR site is totally fan-driven. We'll eventually get the catalogs online, but they are not meant for ordering; they are for informative, pleasant, and inspiring reading.
Gotta run!

Hey, just did a search to see if IPR had a site up and your site was the hit.
I got turned on to Bruce's work back in... '84? Picked up a copy of the second ed. of "Telephone Free..." Didn't know what the process was but responded to it.
Anyway, started my press in '92 and have been plugging away ever since. Mostly job work but have done a number of indie CD and single covers, including a single for my own long dead band. (Sent a copy to Bruce way back when. His comment "yeah it'll peel paint..." right on.) Recently did a CD re-release of Harvey Milks "Courtesy and Good Will Toward Men" available from Andee at tumult.net or Ayal at Reproductive Records who I've done other stuff for.
In any event I don't want this to sound like I'm totally plugging my work but hey, Bruce inspired me to get into this whole thing so...
My easthetic trades typically on black and dark papers and metallic and white inks rather than Bruces' trademark chipboard look which I couldn't in good conscience cop. If anyone is interested get in touch. gotta run since I still work a dayjob... maybe at some point I'll make the leap but Boston is an expensive place to live.
Keep up the good work Trav, and Bruce, hopefully Scenic will make a pass through Boston sometime soon.

I received my Savage Republic tape yesterday. I ordered Tragic Figures. It was just what I wanted! Parasol is amazingly cheap and really quick when it comes to filling orders (I placed the order on Monday and it arrived by Thursday). I am thinking of ordering more tapes/cds/records soon. Probably Ceremonial, and at least one by For Against. I saw many IPR sampler tapes and cds. Are they identified by any certain number? What I mean is, can you recommend a certain one that I could recognize and purchase on Parasol? If you are looking to make more IPR purchases, Parasol would be a good start.

Hello kids,
I just posted a short manifesto on the Trudge site, so I thought I would repeat it for Ya'all. Two members of Savage Republic (Johnny Montana, and Six-Pac Shakur ) have just released a 2 song CD. Now , let me preface this by saying that it is a joke. These songs were written during tense times in SR when were feeling a bit stifled. But against better judgement, we are not calling it "Incident with Zima". It is a total joke, the songs are not 11 minute tributes to clouds or anything like that. (We leave that to the professionals) Instead , it is called" Phil is a short rat-like looking crook" and it features two songs. (Ball Monitor & The German Feel) We were having alot of fun at the time of recording(some years ago) and it also features a former SR roadie "Billy B." Each jewel case is graced by a different celeb.
Some of the previous include Liberace, Herve V (the midge) and Colonel Sanders just to mention a few. This cannot be purchased in stores! Operators are standing by to take your order. Just drop me a line and I'll send you one free! Please specify if want it autographed or with a nude Polaroid of Six-pac. (Johnny only appears in lingerie)
That's all for now kids............

in the 90's i picked up a couple of seven inches and a full length CD on IPR (all of them were half string) at a local indie record store (R.I.P) and never realy knew that much about the label, though it seemed they had the right idea and if their other releases sounded anything like Half String i'd like to hear more. if anyone gets this an knows where i can find more please help!
thanks

Anyone here?!
Greetings from Italy! ...I'm a new IPR/Savage Republic/Mobilization/etc fan (I'm a bit late, but when Tragic Figures came out I was 4yr old!).
So what's new...?

Hello Bruce & Co,
We spoke at the last Scenic show in LA. I just found an ancient ('98) posting from you that suggests that you were trying the get the Red Temple CD's reissued and I was just wondering if there had been any movement on that. I've been trying to locate CD copies of both full lengths for years and would even love to get ahold of burned copies. My copy of Eclipsed Moon is a ratty tape that has unraveled many times and my copy of Lhasa is a vinyl that I'm afraid to play-needless to say I haven't heard either in a decade!! Any direction you can point me in would be much appreciated. I'd also love to get ahold of Dallas to say hello.
I was lucky this year to attend the release party that Jeffrey Clark threw in my neighborhood at the Echo in Echo Park for the Shiva re-releases. I often remember visiting the old Nate Starkman and Son headquarters in the hills of L.A back in the day too.
Take Care and Best Wishes,
Andrea

What a coincidence! About half an hour ago I sent email to a couple people trying to find out the same thing! :)
I did a web search but didn't find an official IPR site. There's http://www.independentproject.net/ but it appears to be eternally under construction; there's nothing there yet.
I'll post info as soon as I get it!

Hi all, well it would seem that I am of two bands I've seen discussed on this forum: Red Temple Spirits and For Against. As of 3 days ago I now own everything from RTS (excluding a few compilation releases) and I own the For Against December and Aperture CDs.
I'm kinda on a mission right now to find out as much as possible about what the RTS band members did before/after RTS. I discovered them back in '90 and believe it or not bought Dancing to Restore an Eclipsed Moon new in a record store! So far, I've figured out that before RTS, William Faircloth had a band called Ministry of Love and put out at least one EP called Wide Awake and Dreaming (Underworld) 1987. Then I learned that William Faircloth and Dallas Taylor went on to some project called The Invisible Opera Company of Tibet. Naturally I can't find either of the two ANYWHERE! So if anyone has any info about any of this I'd be MOST appreciative if you'd let me know.
THANKS!
David

Hi all
I have emailed Trav with this question but thought that I might post here as well in hopes that somebody might come along with some info.
I'm trying to track down a band called Man From Missouri. I saw them play with IPR artists Abecedarians a couple of times here in LA ages ago. There are a couple of self released EPs that I happened across (really good stuff in my oppinion) and I'm wondering if there is any thing else out there and what happened to them.
thanks!
Steven

Hal -
Hi, my html version of the old IPR mail order catalog is for informational/historical purposes only. Neither IPR nor I sell anything via this site. You might be able to track down Resin via Parasol mail order, GEMM.com, or eBay; or your could trying contacting IPR itself.
Good luck!
