Hi everybody
Now that I've become acquainted with the Cope discography that Travis has put
together, I'm interested in seeing if I can get ahold of some of the stuff on
it that I don't already have. Here's the four things I really would like to
have dubs of:
Colours Fly Away 12" (I'm mostly interested in the three B-sides)
Sunshine Playroom 12" (same)
Competition / Belief in Him 7" (listed as Rabbi Joseph Gordan)
Sunspots 7" (with other accompanying 7")
If anybody on this list has any one of these, I'd really like to trade a dub
of your stuff for a dub of some Cope recording of mine that you may not have.
Or I could send you a tape and postage. Thanks, Britt

Hi Trav. Wanted to make sure you check out the Cope feature in the new
issue of Raygun magazine; it's actually good sized. Is the list still
active? Haven't received any culturebunker email for awhile!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raygun? Is that a music mag we can find in the local music stores?
Britt - I have most of the stuff you are lacking. THe only thing I don't
have is the Rabbi Joseph Gordon stuff. Does ANYONE have that?
The culture bunker has been kind of quiet - I think people keep forgetting
the email address, or would rather just reply to the postings. No problem,
really, unless you like it real busy like the Fall newsgroup. :) (At least
it was busy last time I subscribed to it!)
We got a couple of subscribers due to my post on the Chameleons mailing list.
There was some mention of Cope interest over there, so I tossed out the
line.
Also, on the Chameleons list there has been mention of the band For Against.
Someone cited a very positive review of them in Trouser Press Record Guide, and
last night I took a peek at it - they sound interesting. Has anyone heard
their music?
Does anyone know anyting about upcoming Cope releases? Island's CD of B-sides,
Cope's "experimental" album, the Teardrop Live album that never came out...
Take care everybody!

Okay, I'm not shy...generally. Searched as I have, I still
can't come across these two in shops and generally no one is
willing to order them for me. I have some interviews that
I did with Julian that I'd be willing to swap for these
or Teardrop/Cope boots. The quality is okay, but the
commentary is stellar. Some of the best interviews I
have ever done. Drop me a line....pax

Hello, Copers! I have an idea that's been running around my head for
the last couple of weeks.
Is anybody interested in having me put together a tape of Julian Cope/
Teardrop Explodes covers? I'm not talking about songs Julian Cope
performed that were covers (like 5 o'clock world and I have always been
here before) but instead, songs by Julian Cope that *we* cover!
Anyway, I think it would be interesting to try to cover a Julian Cope
song. Maybe some of you feel the same way?
Let me know if any of you are interested in either performing a song,
or a bunch of songs, or if you are just interested in hearing the
compilation tape when it's done.

What a great idea! I will have a go at something this weekend, I
can't guarantee I'll come up with anything though. I'd love a copy
of the tape in any case. :-)

I believe ILK may give it a shot, perhaps little donkey
or Robert Mitchum. I think it's a great idea, I'd love to
hear it for sure. Perhaps advert for bands to do it in some
newsgroups also to flesh it out a bit.

I would love to contribute a track... I play bass, and a guitarist friend of
mine is just getting into his "Cope is God" phase now (in fact, I just bought
him a copy of Jehovakill five minutes ago). I'm not sure what exactly would
lend itself to re-interpretation, though. I have a feeling that anything my
circle of friends would cover would end up pretty radically changed in the
end. Be fun to do one of the long jams tho'.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will also try to contribute a song or two. It's hard to decide where
to start. Maybe we should list possible songs we'll so, to avoid over
lap. Of course, we could all do a version of "Reward" also!
Tell you what - anyone who's interested in putting together some songs,
let's say you have until the end of the month (Oct 31) and then you can
mail them to me, where I will put together the compilation tape. This
"deadline" is kinda arbitrary - just something to spur us on. Without a
deadline, I doubt I'd ever get started.
Anyway, I'm exicted about this project! If you have any questions or
comments, please post 'em to the list! I had a dream that I met Julian
Cope last night. He shook my hand, and I told him about the mailing
list, and he said he doesn't get on the Internet that often, but that
he'd try to check it out. Neat, huh?

I haven't noticed a lot of action on the list lately, so I thought I'd throw
out some Cope questions that I've had and never heard answered. Yes I am a
geek.
1) Who is Leila Kahled?
2) Does anyone know if Donald Ross Skinner has ever released anything outside
of his work with Cope? I guess I'm sort of interested in just about anything
you guys might've heard about him becuase he's rarely mentioned in articles
but he seems like such a big part of J C's music.
3) Has anyone ever heard the Scott Walker compilation album that Cope put
together back around '85? I've never heard or seen anything by him at all and
I'd like to know what his stuff is like.
That's it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ahhh, nice questions.
They have a few Cope CDs in the used bin at the local shop:
Fried, Peggy Suicide and My Nation Underground, I think. Fried
might be hard to come by, so if anyone wants me to pick it up, let
me know!

Speaking of dual Kilamanjaro's, I swear I remember there
being different album covers for the import and the US release.
Is this true? I have my doubts about this recollection because
I recently purchased a UK copy of it used and it was the same
jacket I was used to seeing of the guys standing next to one
another (insert big yawn here...). Until then I had thought that
the UK album had a picture of an animal standing in front of a
mountain that I assumed was Mt. Kil.

Subject: In defense of AUTOGEDDON
Hello there, fellow Bunkerites!
Glad to be on the list, having followed JHC ever since my high school
daze in the early 80s.
However, it's a good thing I just started subbing to this list now, since it
allowed me to buy and listen to AUTOGEDDON ignorant of the overwhelmingly
negative reviews that have appeared herein!
I, for one (only one?), _love_ AUTOGEDDON. In fact, it's been about the
_only_ thing I've been listening to for the past month (yes, over and
over...). For me, it's the (il)logical next step from Jehovakill, eschewing
the slick epic production of that album for a much sparser and aggressive
sound. Although it seems to be all over the place, AUTOGEDDON has an overall
cohesiveness keeps the whole thing from exploding in about a thousand
directions.
There's a much more prominent streak of violence in this album,
especially in the light of his message on Jehovakill and Peggy Suicide.
Perhaps this has turned some people off, but I don't find it out of place
here: violence is, unfortunately, a part of life, and regardless of how
good or 'pure' you want to be, your animal self will occasionally rear
its ugly primal head. Yeah, that's it: this album is a gritty and primal
flip-side to the neolithic utopias on Jehovakill and Peggy Suicide.
And for that, I admire JHC's honesty.
Take 'Don't Call Me Mark Chapman', which is my favourite song on the
album. It reminds me a lot of 'Land' on Patti Smith's 'Horses'. Not just
for the mixture of spoken word poetry and music, but how it portrays a
violent act in a very surreal disjointed manner. The fact that JHC can
even inject some humour into the situation he's portraying ('Don't call
me Sirhan Sirhan, Cause they ain't Duran Duran') _and_ make it work, is a
testament to his brilliance.
I dunno, maybe it's just because I'm an old punk at heart, but I really
dig where he's going with his elaboration of 'kraut rock'. I love JHC for
the same reason I love Iggy. Both are honest (painfully so at times),
both aren't afraid to take chances in their work (sometimes it works,
sometimes it doesn't...diamonds in the rough!! I'd rather listen to JHC's
first take of a song than U2's 150th), and both will be pumping out
albums for a looong time to come! :D
I'll leave you with the following quotes:
"Buttf**ers, buttf**ers trying to rule my world!" Iggy Stooge, _Metallic KO_
"Too many buttf**ers controlling me..." JHC, _AUTOGEDDON_
Cheers!

There were two. I have the Skyclad (?) CD with the Zebras in front of
Kilamanjaro as well as the Polydor with the picture of the guys. My vinyl copy
has the zebra cover, but the mix matches the mix on my polydor CD. In other
owrds I was very disapointed when I bought Kilamanjaro on CD the first time,

This was all about 5 years ago so I have no idea what is currently being sold.

Well, I don't know who Scott Walker is either, but I've got an album by
him! It's on vinyl, released in 1983, and it's called Climate of Hunter.
I haven't listened to it for ages but I seem to remember he has a bizarre
sounding voice and equally bizarre lyrics which seem to mean nothing at all.
I think I will go off and listen to it now! I remember when I bought the
album, my brother (who is a lot older than me and knows all kind of pointless
stuff about music) reckoned that Scott Walker was originally from a group
called The Walker Brothers who had some famous hit - I think it was You'll
Never Walk Alone. Maybe someone older than me on this list (is there anyone?)
can confirm or deny this... If anyone's really interested in this guy I can
type in some of the lyrics from the inner sleeve...
While I'm posting to the list I'd like to add my support for Autogeddon,
which I feel has been unfairly slammed here. It's great, especially
Autogeddon Blues, ... Mark Chapman (just trying to drive the fuckers out)
and s.t.a.r.c.a.r. Fantastic stuff. How can you call yourself a Julian Cope
fan if you don't like it? Sure there's no brassy or poppy shit like his more
produced albums, but there is Julian's mind laid open for us to peer into.
Cool! I want to meet him - isn't it about time he visited Aus?

About Kili:
I have the Zebra version on Vinyl and the faces version on CD. CD adds
"Second Head" and mixes the order around a bit. Also, I think there were some
minor differences in song mixes, like "Reward" had louder piano on the vinyl.
Of course, those differences might just be in the "warmer" sound of vinyl
versus the "antiseptic" sound of a CD.
Also, the vinyl (zebra) version I have has "suffocate," an excellent song
that also appears on YOU DISSAPPEAR FROM VIEW EP in a string-quartet version.
It's neat how our perception of Cope's albums shifts around every once
and a while. Now, I like Autogeddon, and not because of all the positive
reviews. THe other day, before this discussion came up, I was thinking that
I hardly ever play PEGGY SUICIDE anymore. THen I tried to come up with great
songs that I've been missing by not playing PEGGY. Um, Head, Safesurfer, um
Well, I realized that PEGGY might have a real nice sound, and some excellent
driving songs, but there's nothing really to hook me in, nothing dragging me
back. KILI keeps dragging me back. (By the way, I've started a cover of
Sleeping Gas).
When I turned my attention to AUTOGEDDON, I got more excited. "Ain't No
Getting Round Getting Round," "I Gotta Walk," "Autogeddon Blues." THey keep
popping up in my brain, keep calling me.
Speaking of covers, how are y'all doing? I finally got the bass line,
drums, and trumpets for Sleeping Gas (Good that I have the Piano Version, which
is simpler) but the guitar part is eluding me. I made a stab, though:
In key of D:
    Chord 1: A D F#
    Chord 2: Bb D F
Do these sound right to you?

Subject: Scott Walker
Howdy all,
I've seen a couple of mentions of Scott Walker, and I guess I qualify
as "older," so here's some vague info for ya:
The Walker Brothers were a British trio (none of whom were named
Walker) who had a string of big hits in the UK in the mid sixties.
Front man Scott Engel had a big booming voice which often led to
comparisons with the Righteous Brothers. They were all from
the U.S., but lived and recorded in England. Their best known
song in the U.S. is "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore."
Around '66 or '67, Scott Walker recorded a string of four increasingly
less commercial solo albums ("Scott Walker 1" "Scott Walker 2" etc.)
that are the real basis for his reputation. A mixture of original songs
and Jacques Brel covers, they featured brilliant big orchestral
arrangements. The 4th album, released under Scott's real name
(Engel) was a commercial bomb and he went into seclusion.
There's a biography out there which details some sordid events,
such as suicide attempts. He has only recorded sporadically since
then, including an unreleased album produced by Brian Eno in the
mid-to-late 80s.
Walker fans started coming out of the woodwork about 3 years ago
when the albums saw reissue on CD. Another big Walker fan, btw,
is Lloyd Cole. If you're curious to check him out, all four of these
albums are on CD in Europe. Additionally, there is a single disc
compilation of the four, as well as a second compilation that contains
all of the Jacques Brel covers.

I recently obtained some Cope interviews (Thanks Joe!) and they are
very interesting! Makes Cope seem a lot more human, and makes me
respect him a lot more. He sounds like a very bright, self-aware
guy. In parts, he sounded a bit preachy, but for the msot part Joe
did a very good job of steering him back on course.
So, how are the covers going? Mine's almost done (chuckle). Maybe
I'll get my girlfriend to sing it, or something! (I can't sing
worth caca.)
Also, does anyone knoe mikef? His email address used to be
fiddler@warnut.enet.de.com but now that doesn't seem to be working.
He sent me a message asking if I had dropped him from the list, and
that no mail has gotten to him for the last month. I sent him a
reply, but my reply bounced back.
Lastly, I got a complaint about the size of the headers for this list.
I'm not quite sure if the person was talking about the CULTURE BUNKER
title or the To:/From:/Date:/Message-Id:/Subject: lines, which I
agree do take up a lot of space.
When I have time, I will write a program to split the header of of
mailed files, except for the From: and Subject lines. I think I
already wrote it once, but not on this computer. It's just a
dinky little script file. But anyway, I'll try to get that taken
care of, but it might not be very soon (busy part of the semester)
