Travis,
I read this in Q magazine. It was basically a Julian Cope concert mega-review.
The article says that Cope said to the audience that the name of his next album
would be called Auto-geddon Blues. Music from Rite was apparently being piped
in between sets, but at that point Rite hadn't been released.

Subject: Liner notes
G'day,
I've been meaning to do this for some time. I find Julian's liner
notes both amusing and interesting. They're on practically every-
thing he releases. I'll transcribe those from "My Nation Undergrond"
and the "East Easy Rider" EP. I also have "Peggy Suicide" but I
think practically everyone on the list must also have it so I wont
bother with those notes. Perhaps anyone else with other notes could
send these to the list. Travis could also make the available for ftp?
MY NATION UNDERGROUND ...children of a lesser groove
i was born in the blazing sunlight of the very first century.
i was raised by the hands/overhead of my mother earth...but my
father i could not see..i'm hot i'm flushed i'm cold...do i
stand at the edge forever...well i wait/wait for daddy all alone
look away while i dribble & stutter...i un-derstand you all
she says "god jam it" Man & Womb-man/Man & Womb-man
so i went up for a meeting with my image maker...it appears
we have met the enemy/and lo he is one of us.
"Hang on by your fingernails...and never look down." Rorschach.
MY NATION UNDERGROUND Says Nostradamus "it's coming soon," red sun
and rainstorms will have us all. So i built Noah's Ark in my
basement for all the hind-legged people that i love. They gave
confession in my fallout shelter, and i'm particular about people
in my home. i had to seal the ventilation shaft. Now i'm dancing
on my own. Because when the fever breaks, the pain follows soon.
& oh oh oh what d'you do then?
I'M NOT LOSING SLEEP a MoFo of self-pity and doubt. Donald plays
neophyte tenor sax (rudimentary technique w/90% attitude) Ronn-eye
plays all tune percussion.
"when you reject my cries for help & lead me down a darkened
alleyway, you don't need my love, but i'm afraid i'm giving it to
you anyway.
old age & treachery, that's all you've given me
grey hairs and treachery, that's all you've given me
But i'm not losing sleep. i only try to keep you burned out.
in my room i'll keep my eyes open. i'm not losing sleep.
Was it dumb luck to believe you'd let down your guard and sing
to me? and what's on my sleeve? you don't have to beat me...
i'm going anyway..."
19th May, Ron sees the ghost of John Cevetello standing behind
me. He engineered the Vogues' 5 o'clock world & died in the studio.
His last words were "Ready, achieve...."
FIVE O'CLOCK WORLD it's a 5 o'clock shadow when the missile blows....
Double drums- Donn-eye on the right i think. i play the wailing
guitar w/Ron's Thai Tasse organ.
"i know a place where we can hide from the human race outside.
The countdown's started & your bags are packed.
We leave this planet tonight, my dear, let's ride...."
CHARLOTTE ANNE or Beware of those people who, for the sake of
appearances, take on the superficial aspects of the quest (Elevators)
i have this recurring nightmare, i'm playing outside with
a cardboard box. i'm 7 and some big kids are up the street w/all
kinds of johnny sevens & cool bikes. Even though their toys are
about 20 million times better, they come & steal my box. It's my
4th dimensional pleasure that they're jealous of, I guess
"and in my room, i'm alone in my room,
and in my casket, i'm alone in my gloom,
and maybe stay in here for a while.
oh, can't you see light is only in your eyes?
would i be guilty oh, would i be?
the sound you bring is an antiquated thing
so please don't look to me for guidance
Charlotte Anne i do understand
my splendid art, oh my sad profession
now stick with me and i'll betray you
for should i lose my bad depression
my splendid art i will betray you
haul me out of the water
haul me on to the land
beneath the sky there is an open fire
i do understand."
When i was just a little puppy hootin' round in puppy park
i cried four winds wailing and in the night, "don't let me die
like my brothers & sisters, don't let the plastic bag & the river
get me. Let me love in glorious light like french film tableaux
love triangles of vibrant light."
EASTER EVERYWHERE
"i'm in the mood for easter everywhere
long time in the mood for easter everywhere
lie back in the mood for easter everywhere
your whole scene skips a beat but you're killing me
& i'm in the mood for easter everywhere
laid out in the sun for easter everywhere
i'm on a valium cruise for easter everywhere
& some say "wait and see" not "follow me"
we're on an earthquake island/on an alien planet
gotta find someone who can help me out
i don't care about the others/just care about me
don't want to have fun & i just don't want to be free"
Well, the devil capsized my little blue boat... "do you sink or
do you swim?" said he. "cause i'm gonna find you guilty if you
float"...so i dive to the bottom of the harbour.
VEGETATION
"it is possible that a certain amount of brain damage is
of therapeutic value" Dr. Paul Hoch/N.Y. State commissioner for
mental hygiene.
"one time i stood, crazy at the brink of a 6 foot drop in the
ground. i just couldn't wait to have the soil on me, as my head
spun round & round.
i looked down & into that hollow grave, but i just could not be
sure. my vertigo brain had me on the edge, but i'd fear if i
fell for you and your vegetation.
well i didn't really want to kill myself, but there just was no
other way. now i wait for you darling in my graveyard bed &
each day brings you close to me & my vegetation.
well i live my life in here now, what a shame, as the flowers
grow over me. sometimes i wonder what kind of weed i'm growing
up to be."
CHINA DOLL
"foolish child, shade your eyes, blanket the sun,
came the day i am safe, you are the one,
a magic carpet ride, dreams (and All true)
see my alabaster child roll on...
cause i'm an earthbound boy
and so i worship you china doll
eyes that shine hide behind, pale & unsure
did my broken promise break your china heart?
my little black haired girl, porcelain doll
sink slowly into this blank heart of mine
cause i'm an earthbound boy
and so i worship you china doll
you feel my flailing arms around your neck, china doll
you feel my crazy silence
round the depths of your soul
and all the misery & crying, all the reasons i don't give
you're gonna wake up in the morning
with a crowd round you bed
cause i'm an earthbound boy
& so i worship you china doll
14th May, my dog Smelvin eats enough rat poison to kill him. we look
after the little dude & in 10 days everything is cool again
...great white shark...great white way...great white hope...
great white wonder...great white hoax is me point down on you
GREAT WHITE HOAX or Carve a headstone for humanity...Fred Nietzche
said "battle ye not with monsters lest ye become a monster"... i'm
making a glitterstompf out of saying it.
"end my life is all there is...i get no help from me
shame myself into something real, cause that's what i'm
going to be."
i have this nightmare where i'm at a party. It's for me, it's
my party, and everyone is welcoming me & being really cool.
This keeps on about 20 minutes, piling up the friendliness till my
head explodes. I grab a crash helmet and start to run, head-down,
at the plate glass doors to the garden...smash...though the
window...through the people outside, and away out of the grounds.
i run on and on through a small village where people are standing
at their doors, welcoming me and smiling, the light from the coal fires
glows behind them silhouetted in the doorway.
i run and i run
Is there nowhere i will be unwelcome?

1. EAST EASY RIDER..."Easy ride inside of
you". Seems to me that the wheel's gonna
kill us. You spend your life being sold on the
idea of freedom and the open road, 2-Lane
flat-top, the driving movie, the open-
topped sports car, the motorbike as phallic
metaphor, the whole schmeer. Then we find
out that pollution's going to kill us and we'd
all better behave damned quick. This
double-absurdity shouldn't be lost on any
of us. Especially this - if we don't move (and
pronto, Tonto), our children are going to
take one look at the world that we've left
them and they're going to kill us whilst we
sleep.
2. BUTTERFLY E... The Clang of the Albion
Reaper.
3. ALMOST ALIVE...There's a psychic
umbilical chord between the dream state
and the waking self. There is a similar
chord between the waking self and the
super-consciousness. That chord is a tunnel
of light, a Beautiful Blue Upwards waiting to
shine out of us. "... and I do believe"
4. LITTLE DONKEY..."Well, I'm a burro boy,
a little donkey". This song was first
released on the 1989 LP. "Skellington".

Hi, list!
I have gotten astoundingly overwhelmed in a busy week, I've been on the
net about 2 times in 2 weeks as opposed to maybe 200 before. But I just
read the interview with JC and Bill Drummond where he was up in a cave
working on his book about stone circles etc. I think his thoughts on
Island are utterly brilliant.. they are the short sighted ones, he knows
that the numbers he sold for Peggy Suicide are awesome, and isn't
going to get sucked into their frame of reference.
Let's hear it for two double albums in a row...

I got a bunch of articles on Cope yesterday.
He said some of the songs off Skellington dated back to his days with
the Crucial Three. There was also mention in an article about a follow-up
to EVERYBODY WANTS TO SHAG THE TEARDROP EXPLODES, which would contain
B-Sides. Anybody know about these things?

Subject: more stuff for the list
Just to keep the list "warm", here's a pretty wanky blurb from this Teardrops
EP (double single, actually) I have. It was meant to be the final record
issued as The Teardrop Explodes, but obviously they found enough extra stuff
to release Everybody Wants to Shag.
Yesterday I was looking through my vinyl record collection and came across my
original copies of Wilder and Kilimanjaro. I noticed that these had inserts
which included the lyrics to these albums and also some extra verses/poems by
Julian. These were missing from my CD copies of these albums. I'll type them
in when I get suitably bored one day.

I often hear people asking,
'What bag is Julian Cope REALLY in? Is he like, well y'know, WEIRD, like.
But I mean TOTALLY weird?' Having pondered these very same questions myself
from time to time I think I may have stumbled across two answers and a red
herring.
You see, both your media buff and your zealous fan share a tendency to form
opinions in black and white. To one Julian Cope is simply 'a white faced loon',
to the other he's 'a godlike and utterly honest injun'.
These foolish bromides cut no ice with me.
The truth of the matter is that Julian Cope, like the chameleon, comes in
colours, he gives his imagination full scope. He is a personality at a time
when being a personality is rare and unfashionable.
Cope's sin, in the eyes of the humourless, has not been a penchant for heavy
drink, or excessive womanising, or the fact that he is a part time vegetarian,
but that he has the guts to be spontaneous. Copey, as his friends call him,
isn't afraid to make the odd facetious gesture and carry it off, a quality
which annoys those who prefer their heroes rugged, safe and boring.
A classic Julian Cope performance recognises the virtues of exhibitionism
and flaunts it in the face of convention. It's one thing to sport a pair of
leather pants on stage - quite another to shamelessly smother your torso with
Gale's honey. What seems stupid to some is profound to the next man. Ironic
even.
Julian Cope values irony in his art as well as emotion.
This is a brief sketch and I'm sorry not to have mentioned the music or the
faithful hound in much detail. As for this EP I like it a lot and hope that
you will too, now and in the years to come. It is sad that this is the last
record to be issued under the Teardrops Explodes banner but the lads felt that
they'd gone as far as they could in that direction. Anyhow, they've left us
with a couple of LPs of the first water not to mention a fistful of 45s which
all bear repeated listening and you can't ask for more than that.
Julian says to tell you that 'what's coming up is going to be SEVEN times
better. Is that enough?'
Wow
Music, maestro please.

Yeah, I was pretty tempted by the Phoenix festival. Glastonbury has a
sad line-up this year (with a few notable exceptions) and Long Marsden
isn't really that far.
It's a lot of money, but Jehovahkill will be spectacular in the open air.
Sonic Youth will be a total letdown afterwards. Young Gods, Butthole
Surfers? Could be interesting if you're in the right mood. Giant Sand?
Yes! Billy Bragg? Great, but probably on at the same time as Gil
Scott-Heron, and you won't be able to get within 50 feet of the stage
anyway.
So? A verdict? If there's a few of you, and you get into it, it'll be
brilliant. If you feel less than 100%, then it'll be crap.
That said, am I going? No idea.

Jehovahkill:
What's the story with the different CD boxes? My Jehovahkill box is coloured
solid blue, with no writing on it at all. There's just a sticker on the front
giving the listing. But the other day, I saw another box with a transparent
cover, the sleeve of which had more pictures of ancient stones, and on the back
was written DEICIDE amongst other things.
What gives? And is one rarer than the other? What colour is _your_ box?
Nicki
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nicki -
I've got the opaque blue box with the sticker that says "Jehovahkill" etc
on it. The booklet itself has the pretty sceneery on it. This is the
British version, or at least one of them.
The American version has a transparent "Normal" CD case, but the outside
of the booklet is blue. Also, the American version includes song lengths
while the British version does not. (Again, I'm speaking of the American and
British versions that I've seen.)
Personally, I think the best cover would be transparent CD case with the
pretty scenery showing. Or course, all ya gotta do is buy an extra CD case
and you've got just that., With ther British version, at least.
Maybe the "other" CD you saw was actually a differnt case, but same
booklet.

Does anybody know what Julian Cope is doing now? Is he still touring?
Or is he working on another album? I can't wait till his next one comes out!!
Also, some unanswered questions:
Anybody know about that supposed EVERY BODY WANTS TO SHAG PART II, where
there would be lots of Teardrops B-sides... Or is this really PIANO, with
mostly singles and maybe a few B-sides.
Anybody have some live Cope material? How are the quality of his bootlegs,
in general?
Where is "Bring Cherhill Down" (off of RITE) originally from? Jo gave me
a tape a while ago with BCD on it - wonder where it originates.
How old is Cope now? I have no clue when he was born. Wonder if he's as
old as my dad... :) heh heh
What's the address for a Julian Cope "fanclub?" THere's no address at all
in Jehovahkill...
Anyway, take care everybody!

SONGS TO SLEEP BY:
A Glimpse Into the World of Travis, IPECAC and the Master Anchovies
duration: 90 minutes
contents:
The first side is a collection of songs I recorded with and without
different bands back in 1988 and 1989, and up to the present. It's
narrated and you can get a good sense of my entire "musical career."
The second side houses the ten-song epic BAND IN THE LAND OF THE
ANCHOVIES, which is based on a play I wrote in 1990. The entire
BAND IN THE LAND... series was recorded in April 1993.
The music has jazz, reggae, rock, rap, funk and even easy listening
influences. Yes, it is varied, but the songs I have chosen all tend
to be the catchier, most immediate ones.
The tape cover was printed using word perfect. It lists all the
songs, with a paragraph about each band I used to play with. The
cover notes, like the songs themselves, are good-humored (though
the quality of my humour may be debatable.)
cost: $5 plus postage and handling. You pay me the $5+postage and you
get the tape (I'll buy TDK/TYPE II/HIGH POSITION so don't worry about
getting the el-cheapo stuff) and the tape sleeve.
contact: [snipped -- Trav]
Please let me know if you're interested in buying a copy of SONGS TO SLEEP
BY. The $5+postage covers the cost of the envelope, the tape, the postage,
and the time I spend dubbing and printing out/cutting up the covers. That
means I'm not out for profit, just a little exposure and constructive
criticism. Thank you.

Subject: sex
Hi all,
I just got the May issue of Select (UK) magazine. The theme of the issue is
sex and there is a short interview with Julian, they call him "The Spiritual
Cowboy", which is transcribed below.
S: Would you have sex to your own records?
JC: Yes. One of the reasons we did 'Rite' was so that we
could have sex to our own records.
S: What's your favourite chat-up line?
JC: "Are you comin' upstairs?"
S: What was your first sexual experience like?
JC: It was sort of traumatic because I go VD from it.
I copped off with a 17 year old girl who didn't know
I was 14-I was very cool among the sixth formers
but a total pariah in my own year.
S: What was your most intense erotic experience?
JC: Kind of around th past six months, I suppose.
Dorian and I have been having a different kind of sex.
It's out of doors, clear-night sex and has a lot to do
with the stars.
S: How do you rate yourself sexually?
JC: I've got rhythm.
S: What's your shagging tape?
JC: Any real unchanging Kraut. A Tony Conrad and Faust
album, 'Outside The Dream Syndicate' from 1973- both
sides are exactly the same, they're both 20 minutes.
And I suppose Sly.
S: Have you ever had a homosexual experience?
JC: No, I haven't.
S: What turns you off?
JC: Madonna.
S: Do you get groupies?
JC: I think any mixing with either sex is a sexual experience,
so from that point of view I don't think you have to shag
around to have a tremendous sexual response from your fans.
I'd say the whole thing was a sexual trip.
S: What's your favourite sexual fantasy?
JC: I'd actually not be able to say that. It's just a
bit too overt.
S: Who is your ideal woman?
JC: Oh my wife, definitely.
S: Have you ever faked an orgasm?
JC: No.
S: Do you use a condom?
JC: No.
S: What's your most regrettable sexual experience?
JC: Very early days of the Teardrops., where I could be a
little bit strange with female fans.
S: Who's the most famous person you've ever had sex with?
JC: I don't think I've ever had sex with anybody famous.
Is Lydia Lunch famous?
S: What's the weirdest place you've ever had sex?
JC: With Dorian when I first met her, during 'Wilder',
actually on top of AIR studios over Oxford Street, cos
we were both hanging with our heads over the edge,
about seven stories up. That was pretty far out.
S: Have you ever had sex with a friend's girlfriend?
JC: Yes.
S: Is there any film or photographic evidence out there
somewhere?
JC: Oh loads, yeah.
S: What is a pervert? Are you one?
JC: I suppose St. Paul.
S: Where do you draw the line?
JC: that's a difficult one. I don't know.
S: Have you ever paid for sex?
JC: Not with money.
S: Do you use pornography?
JC: Yes.
S: Have you ever had career sex?
JC: No, I don't think I have.
S: Who would you finish with your partner for?
JC: I wouldn't finish with my partner for anybody.
S: Have you ever had sex/a relationship with a fan?
JC: Yes.
S: Who did you fancy when you were young?
JC: I had a wicked hard on for Helen Mirren.
There it is. Also in same issue, the magazine attempts
to head up a campaign to nominate JC for knighthood.
"Let's put Julian up there where he belongs with sirs
David Frost, Bob Geldof, Michael Grade and John Gielgud
(none of whom ever wrote anything as good as 'Reward'
or 'Out of My Mind on Dope and Speed', and wouldn't
know a stone circle if their chauffer backed into one).

I have RITE, but got it via a friend in Britain. I did a RITE-up on it (heh)
a few weeks back. THe music is totally different from Jehovahkill. It's
more of the trancy-psycho stuff. Very repetitious, but also very soothing
in a way. Neat stuff. Four songs. Each are about 10 to 20 minutes long.
I think it's only available via mail order. If someone wants a copy, you

How do!
Just read in the local evening paper!
Julian Cope to tour Ireland. Four venues in Dublin, Limerick,
Cork and Belfast.
It is part of his "Ancient Castles" tour.
So far none of the usual ticket outlets are aware of the tour,
but I live in hope. The paper is usually reliable.
Does anyone know what the script is with the Ancient Castles thing.
I wonder is it just stuff from RITE?
Brian!

Subject: Cope Live !
Julian Cope played a one-off gig on Friday at Bath College. It was the
smallest venue he's played for a while - 400 people. The show was naturally a
sell out.
The set was pretty much an acoustic affair - mainly just Julian, occasionaly
joined by Rooster Cosby on bongos/electric guitar.
Julian made his entrance through the crowd which caused quite a stir and
chatted to the audience for 5 minutes or so before getting started.
Songs performed included:
Upwards at 45 degrees, Poet is priest, Robert Mitchum, Sunspots, Greatness and
Perfection, Passionate Friend, Fear Loves this place, China Doll, Beautiful
love, Out of my Mind.. , Soul Desert, Pristine, Hanging out and hung up to
Dry, Reynard, St Julian, Trampolene, Paranoia in the West Country (I think ! -
its a new one).
Julian also recited three poems, which were about Romans, Sting, and the
unknown Walker brother which were all pretty amusing. Usual antics ensued
including climbing over the audience and climbing speakers. The show lasted
about 90 minutes and only came to and end because Julian had no voice left !
News:
Skellington and Droolian will be released as one album in July. Julian is
also in the process of making a new album - Autogeddon, dedicated to those who
die in cars !

Subject: JULIAN COPE SIGNS TO DEF AMERICAN
Julian Cope is signing to Def American, Rick Rubin's
influential US label.
The deal applies to the US and Canada only.
The label is thought to be changing it's name to American Recordings.
Cope is thought to be waiting until the completion of another LP
before signing a UK deal, probably with one of the larger indie labels.
In the meantime, Cope releases another mail-order only LP, "The
Skellington Chronicles" at the end of the month.

Also , I got my copy of Rite back but with no mention of the "Give us
an interview" letter I enclosed with the cash. Not _that_ surprising,
I know.

Thanks for trying anyway, Brian...
And thanks for forwarding the usenet message. I was just about to do
that myself. : )
Does anyone know about the SKELLINGTON CHRONICLES the guy is talking
about? Is this the re-release of skellington and Droolian on one CD
that someone mentioned earlier?

So who's volunteering to get me a copy of The Skellington Chronicles?

Well, it'd help to know what it is first. I haven't had the best of luck
with the mail-order stuff. The addresses I mail to are always outdated.
Does anyone have an address for Cope info? This would be a GREAT place
to post it, you know...
