The Culture Bunker #01

1993-02-26 to 1993-03-05

early March 1993

[This first "post" was a brief introduction to The Culture Bunker that I mailed out along with the first few issues to new subscribers. -- Trav]

Hello! Welcome to THE CULTURE BUNKER, the very first Julian Cope / Teardrop
Explodes mailing list. The first issue was 26 February 1993, so you probably
haven't missed a whole lot of the discussion. I'm gonna mail you the first two
or three issues so that you can get a feel of what goes on here. So far we
have about 15 people subscribed to the list. We've got people in Britain,
America, Canada and even one extra-friendly guy down in Perth, Australia. So
we could rightfully call this the Very First INTERNATIONAL Julian Cope /
Teardrop explodes list.
I totally enjoy writing about Julian Cope and about music in general. So it's
no problem to subscribe people and to write up reviews and articles for this
list. However, I'd love to hear your input! So far (as of 2 March 1993) we've
had only one other contributor to the conversation. I know this is only the
second official day, but I'm rearing to go! So let's get the babble rolling
(no this is not the Cure list...) and maybe, just maybe, we can petition Mister
Cope for an interview (yeah dream on, Trav... Hey, but if the PHISH list can
do it...) :)
Anyway, take care, and start your babbling!
Travis
P.S. --> If you want the complete discussion up to now, mail me requesting it.

[The "Allen Foster Production" reference is an inside joke that no one will get except me; my best friend and I would often use Allen Foster (another friend) as a "scapegoat" for our less serious creations. "Copephilia" was a self-deprecating pun trying to deflate the apparent seriousness of having a mailing list. "Official" was a complete misnomer; this mailing list was in no way approved (or likely even read) by Cope or any of his representatives. In other words, I had no idea what I was doing. -- Trav]

Allright, let's start by introducing ourselves. I'm curious how you guys got
into Julian Cope in the first place. It might be easier in Britain, but few
people over here in the States seem to know him.
A friend of mine dubbed me a mixed tape back in high school. It had "Planet
Ride," "Saint Julian," "Eve's Volcano," and "Trampolene." (from the SAINT
JULIAN L.P.) I instantly liked it, along with the Chameleons' stuff she dubbed
for me too. Anyway, I kind of hung onto those four songs, but didn't go
out and buy any tapes (wasn't a big collecter then.)
When i got to college, one of the guys at the tape store recommended I try
PEGGY SUICIDE, so I got it and instantly liked it! (Yes this was only a year
ago that I got my first Cope tape...)
Since then, I've bought all the L.P.'s, dubbed several E.P.'s and B-sides from
the radio station, and begged copies of DROOLIAN and SKELLINGTON off of my
friend Jim, who is subscribed to this list. (Now where'd he g...)
Anyway, as I've only been collecting Cope stuff for the past year, I haven't
had to opportunity to learn all that much about Julian Cope. Just from talking
to Jim and from a few articles I cut out of ROLLING STONE. Some say he's
crazy, some say he's brilliant... So let's get the discussion rolling!
   --- Travis Emmitt ---
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone wants to get copies of albums from me, please go ahead and ask me.
I don't mind dubbing stuff for people. Also, if anyone has bootlegs (I don't)
then go ahead and offer 'em... (face it, we're the only dudes interested in
Cope - who else are we gonna get stuff from?)
I'm looking for: RITE (whatever it is), lots of EP's, any literature or
lyrics files. (Hey, anyone know the lyrics for Jehovahkill? We can write our
own if there isn't an existing one.)
Basically, I am really psyched about this list, because Julian Cope is my
favorite musician and finally we can get some group discussions going! :)
  So please write!

Hey Travis,
Good to see you got the newsletter happening. How do you feel about changing
its name to something a bit more related to Julian, like just to show
everyone how cluey and esoteric we are? I was talking to my friend (who
also wants to be on the list, mail him at chrisp@cs.uwa.edu.au) and we
thought something like "Sqwubbsy" or "Drude" or "Safe Surfer" or even
"The Culture Bunker" for us old Teardrops fans (I like that one the best)
might make good names. Anyway, it's just a suggestion, I'm curious to see
what you think.
I reckon we should get together and try to compile a complete Teardrops and
Julian discography. All the albums are easy, but there's a lot of CD and
vinyl singles and EPs which we could compile - I've got a few and so has my
friend Chris. I don't know if you or any of the other people on the list have
got bootlegs or rare singles we could add to it.
Now you've got the list happening you should post to alt.music.alternative
announcing it. I can get Chris to post to the Manchester list telling them
about it - bound to get a heap of people joining from there.
Anyway, keep up the good work.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All right - we have an official name now and it's not "Copephilia," which
people thought perverse, but is now "THE CULTURE BUNKER," as suggested by
James P., who just happens to be our VERY FIRST CONTRIBUTOR!!!! Thank you,
James!!!
A complete discography... hmmm... Yeah, given that the albums are pretty
much commonly known, we could do well to amass a list of EP's and bootlegs...
Good idea, James. I have a few E.P.'s which I'll post in a second. I dubbed
them from the radio station, so I don't know all of their proper names, but
I know the songs:
TEARDROP EXPLODES E.P.'s:
All I have is YOU DISSAPPEAR FROM VIEW (from now I'm gonna capitalize all
albums and EP's and put songs in quotes, which is the usual convention
when lacking italics and bold type)... Basically, the only tune not on
EVERYBODY WANTS TO SHAG (1990) is the string quartet version of "Suffocate,"
which is neat but not essential. The date for YOU DISSAPPEAR.. is 1983,
from Phonogram records (according to the Trouser Press Record Guide)
JULIAN COPE E.P's and singles:
JULIAN COPE E.P. (1986 Island) -- contains "World Shut Your Mouth,"
"(I've Got) Levitation," "Umpteenth Unnatural Blues," "Non Alignment
Pact," and "Transporting." I like all of these songs.
DANCING HEADS E.P. (1991 Island?) -- contains two remixes of "Head," one of
"Beautiful Love" and one of "East Easy Rider," all off of PEGGY
SUICIDE. All all different from album versions, being more dancy
(almost in same spirit of The Cure's MIXED UP).
FEAR LOVES THIS PLACE E.P. (1992 Island?) -- contains "Fear Loves This Place,"
"I Have Always Been Here Before," "Sizewell B" and "Gogmagog." I love
the first two songs, really like the third one, and kinda like the last
one. They're all really rhythmic, in the style of some of the dancier
        stuff on JEHOVAHKILL.
Well, that's about it for me. Four E.P.'s... not very much. Jo's being nice
enough to mail me a few more in swap for SKELLINGTON and DROOLIAN, which are
two very WEIRD albums that are nevertheless ranked up there with PEGGY SUICIDE
in certain reviews I've read.
Time to start a new article.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all, everybody... start writing to the list! James was a brave
soul in deed for putting up his words in front of the millions of scathing
eyes of all these Cope readers.... (Well, actually, that would mean each
of us has a hundred thousand eyes or so.. anyway enough silliness ha ha ha)
I don't have any bootlegs. Jim mentioned one recently. I don't know if
Cope is as into audience tapings as PHISH is, so I have no idea of how good
these concert tapings sound. Maybe Jim can help us out here.
Another thing I think would be neat is to come up with some lyrics files.
SAINT JULIAN and WORLD SHUT YOUR MOUTH have lyrics in the covers, but I don't
think any other albums do. So this would be cool Get a couple of people
deciphering FRIED, a couple deciphering JEHOVAHKILL, etc... I kind of think
the Brits and Aussies have an advantage over us Americans here, give the
accents, but I';ll give it my best shot anyway...
Lastly, I've got a handful of reviews/articles about Cope that I can type
into the computer on a semi-regular basis. Does anyone want me to start doing
this? (If so, I'll gladly do it, but if not, I won't fight you.)
I'm planning to post this every evening that I get mail. So it's like a
digest. I don't have real MAILING LIST software - I had to write my own - a
couple of semi-fancy script files is all... So is once a night okay?
Allright, I'm posting this in 5 minutes... If I get any more mail tonight
I might put out another issue but unless that happens, until tomorrow,
y'all!!!!

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Who/what is Sqwubbsy and what is the song about?

Mon Mar 1 21:45:56 EST 1993
Here are two REVIEWS I just typed up. They took a lot longer than I had
anticipated - about five to ten minutes each. (I expected to be able to
type as fast as I read but that wasn't the case. Dictating is slow work.)
Enjoy them. They're not very long. One's for PEGGY SUICIDE and one's for
SAINT JULIAN. I've got tons more. Some really long ones too. (sigh)
Take care y'all.

                                 R E V I E W S
Starting small, from ROLLING STONE Dec 12th 1991 :
PEGGY SUICIDE - Julian Cope - Island
The problem with most social-activist pop stars is that whenever they get on
the soapbox, they leave their sense of humor back home. Julian Cope, a
longtime resident of Britain's rock fringe, knows how to have fun with
issues. Consider the ironic Buddy Holly twist in the title of this brilliant,
sprawling ecological-protest opera or the impish echo of the Beatles' "Drive
My Car" in Cope's droll antipollution cruising song "Drive, She Said." But
Cope also knows how to get down and desperate. Over the course of PEGGY's
four phases, Cope articulates his Book of Revelation vision of Gaia under seige
in startling, Technicolor psychedelia - serpentine raga guitars, cheesy sixties
organ, odd but punctuative effects like the Lenny Bruce sample in "Soldier
Blue." PEGGY SUICIDE is hardly sober through and through, but the subtext is
brutally plain: It's not nice to fuck over Mother Nature.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SAINT JULIAN - Julian Cope - Island
(Rolling Stone sometime)
It's been five years since Julian Cope, the former leader of the
Teardrop Explodes, has had a full-length album out in America.
SAINT JULIAN reintroduces him as an artist of stature: self-invented,
self-assured, ready to take on the world. Given the religious
allusions that crop up on this album and Cope's titular sainthood,
the words "Second Coming" don't seem entirely out of place.
Fully nine of these ten songs hurtle forward with a concise sense of
mission and barely containable energy. From tha slam-bang chords that
open "World Shut Your Mouth" to the bullet-train overdrive of "Pulsar,"
Cope attacks his material with an almost deranged vigor. He delivers
feverish visions about God, death, sex and the universe, with a kind
of cosmic giggle underlying it all.
Lifting his gaze above the banality of the day to day, Cope charts a
course for the stars. Driven by a surging beat and fistfuls of
garage-style power chords, SAINT JULIAN spinds you into a state of
disorienting ecstasy. You can almost feel the G forces as each song
throttles up just a little. By the time you're deel into the second
side, with Cope screaming, "Jesus help me, I've got to get out of this
atmosphere," you'll feel a little out of breath yourself. But in a
sudden reversal of tempo, the album drifts back to earth via "A Crack
in the Clouds," an eight-minute parable in which a wandering sould
seeks a troubled truce with the world that tried to keep him down.
Some of the imagery is so private that it will be indecipherable to
the literal minded. But if you let the music wash over you, the
message will come through lou and clear. Updating the flower-punk
sound of the late Sixties with a light coat of Eighties studio gloss,
Julian Cope has forged a neo-psychedelic synthesis that stands as his
strngest musical statement to date.

Hi, Cope fans --
At last -- a mailing list for Julian Cope, one of rock's truly unique.
Thank you Travis!
I became a Julian fan the same way I became a Joy Division fan: by stops
and starts over several years. I heard "Passionate Friend" on
Cleveland's WRUW in the early '80s and was very impressed, but I never
followed up on it. In '85, I taped a song off WILDER and knew I had to
have the album. The same tape, made off Cleveland's WCSB, also introduced
me to The Chamaeleons. Quite a tape...
Anyway, I have a question for the almighty List that has been on my mind
for some time. I recall hearing that Julian Cope was in a band with Ian
McCullough ages ago when they were both kids. This band, as I recall the
legend, was inconceivably cool but played only one amazing gig before it
broke up and formed Teardrop Explodes and Echo & B'Men.
Anyone have some facts concerning this legend?
-- Thanks, Jeff
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello again! We picked up about eight more subscribers today! Yeah!
I'm going to pop on Saint Julian for a while...
Well, I kind of recall someone mentioning Julian Cope and Ian
McCulloch in a badn togerther myself... Let me pull out my trusty
Trouser Press Record guide...
Ahhh.. here it is... page 669.. Under THE TEARDROP EXPLODES...
"Charming despite frequent bouts of pretentiousness, singer/songwriter
Julian Cope (once in a crypto-band called the Crucial Three with future
Echo icon Ian McCulloch and future Wah! man Pete Wylie) led liverpool's
great psychedelic hope, The Teardrop Explodes, through two albums before
moving on - in the midst of an aborted third - to a solo career. etc..."
The Crucial Three does not appear in the Trouser Press, nor is there
any additional mention of them in the Teardrop Explodes article.
It is interesting that Echo and the Bunnymen did a cover of "Books" on
their debut. :)
Has anyone heard WAH! ??? This was the first mention of them I'd ever
encountered.
Peace, everybody...

In the mid 80s, UK. The band had a very large hit with a song called
"Story Of The Blues".....followed with a minor hit "Come Back"....and then
started the spiral downwards into pop oblivion. They were cqalled
"The Mighty Wah!" for the while I can remember (after the 1st hit mebbe? :-)
-------
Someone asked about Squbbsy. All I can remember is the photo of the extremely
large baby-like figure in the booklet to Peggy Suicide......not much help eh?.
-------
How did I get into Cope? A friend in the UK played me "Reynard The Fox" from
"Fried". Instant convert (...and I made the Teardrop connection afterwards).
-------
Teardrop fans should pick up the "everyone wants to shag the teardrop explodes"
LP - the 3rd "unfinished" one. It has some fairly up-to-date sounds in it!
****Interview****
One of my interview-o-ambitions is a cope chat (along with Tim Booth from
James). I do this sort of stuff at my public FM station here in Melbourne.
I'll glady do the interview if we can grab a petition :) :)
(will have to send it to Cope, as Island have dumped him). I've done
Lush, Inspirals, Happy Mondays, New FADS in the past, so have practice...and
of course, will copy tapes for list members etc!) This is all pie in the sky
at the moment.....so lets make it real!

OKay, Brian's our interviewer!
Thanks for writing, Brian
I really like EVERYBODY WANTS TO SHAG.... I'll put it on now, come to think
of it, since SAINT JULIAN just finished...
Oh yeah - Brian, there's a song on Droolian called Sqwubbsy. And I guess
it appears on PEGGY SUICIDE, since they give credit for "Sqwubbsy's Cloak."
Um, LYRICS, anybody?!?!?!?!
And finally, does anyone know of the mailing address for the Julian Cope fan
Club? I wrote the one on the inside of PEGGY SUICIDE but my letter came back
with ADDRESS UNKNOWN stamped on it.
What exactly is Reynard the Fox about???
Darn it! Let's get some lyrics going! That would be way cool! I need someone
to take charge of the operation, to delegate. I can't be in charge of
  everything, you know...
LYRICS would be great!
LYRICS!!

Have I gotten my point across yet?
Laugh!
Yes?

Subject: I've met Sqwubbsy...
In case it isn't clear from the cover of 'Peggy', Sqwubbsy is a space
alian who is Julian's alter ego. S/he/it is also a costume that he
picked up from a theatrical shop that AMAZINGLY was identical to the
vision he had some while earlier. Sqwubbsy went to the poll tax demo
with Julian and the lads (thats what the picture is of). When he was
playing in London in January, Julian announced a special guest and
Squbbsy came onto the stage, danced around for a bit and went off
again...well, you did ask!!!
I think Reynard actually is (mainly) about fox-hunting (in case
anyone doesn't know, fox-hunters wear red coats). When he played it
live, he put on a sort of dog-costume. There were also people
collecting money for Lynx (an anti-fur campaign) and he seems to have
made Reynard a sort of theme-song for them.
Has anyone heard 'The Faust Tapes'? As it's been mentioned as a big
influence on Jehovahkill.
Bye for now,
Jo

Subject: Julian stuff...
Hi all!
OK, I first got intro'd to Mr. Cope, just before Christmas of '91 when a friend
loaned me the Peggy Suicide CD. I instantly fell in love with it, and went
out to buy "My Nation Underground". I liked that one, though not nearly as
much. Then I bought "Fried" which hit me the same as "Nation". (Both of these
have improved much with me, with time.) Then I copped World Shut Your Mouth,
which I couldn't stand then, and still don't like now - I recently sold it to a
friend... I bought Jehovahkill the day it came out in the states (which was
much later than in the UK, apparently.) I can't decide if I like that one more
than Peggy, but I suppose it really doesn't matter. I don't have Saint J. yet,
so there's still something for me to look forward to!
My favorite musicians are usually solo artists, with a self-aware approach to
their music. (Tom Waits, JC, Neil Young, Harry Chapin, Peter Hammill (more
about him in a second.))
--
I have a couple of informal additions to the JC / TE ep discography:
east easy rider e.p. - 1991
1. East Easy Rider
2. Butterfly E.
3. Almost Alive
4. Little Donkey
(It says that "Little Donkey" is from the "Skellington" LP.
Teardrop Explodes - Serious Danger (CD Single) 1990
1. Serious Danger
2. Sleeping Gas
3. Seven Views of Jerusalem
The preceding 2 I own, but the following are things that I remember seeing:
Head e.p.
contains a remixed version of Head, I think, and at least 2 more songs. One
called "Anyway at all" and one called "Bagged-out Ken"
Not to be confused with Dancing Heads
Beautiful Love e.p. (Including the Best of JC)
has 2 versions of BL, I think, as well as 4 or 5 songs from "Nation" and
"Saint".
--
"Reynard the Fox" is an Old English tale.
--
Julian Cope, in some interview or another, said he was influenced by Peter
Hammill (something that is more or less obvious in certain of JC's songs). PH
wrote a song, way back in '74, called "Gog Magog". Can somebody tell me the
writer's credits for "Gogmagog" on the Fear... e.p.? The song "I Have Always
Been Here Before" was written by Roky Erikson and JC's version first appeared
on "Where The Pyramid Meets the Eye", a tribute album to Roky Erikson.
--
What's the deal with Skellington and Droolian? Are they privately distributed
by JC??
--
I was inspired to listen to "Peggy Suicide" last night - and I was trying to
figure out a lyric: in "Not Waving But Drowning", is it "The sea lingers
here..." or "The ceiling is here..."?
Any word on Julian touring in North America?
All for now.

Subject: The Faust tapes
Thanks for all the email.
I was surpised to see a mention of 'The Faust Tapes', l've got this limited
edition (very) cheap album released on Virgin in early 1973.
It is very experimental as it was drawn from the private tapes of Faust who
were a German band. They had made 2 albums - 'Faust' and 'Faust So Far' round
about 1970/72.
If memory serves (I was 14 when I bought it), it was the first release on the
newly formed Virgin label and was meant to introduce the band to a wider British
audience. It is full of sound collages, etc some good and some ...
The sound is similar to side 3 of 'Tago Mago' (1971) by Can.
I was suprised to find that Julian Cope would be influenced by Faust, although
as yet I haven't heard 'Jehovah Kill' to make any comparisons. I suppose it
makes a departure from his Syd Barrett-Floyd/Scott Walker type of sound.
On another issue, I saw the man himself in 1988 and he was truly brilliant, his
encore rendition of 'Reynard The Fox' was amazing - as was a slowed down version
of 'World Shut Your Mouth'. All in all a memorable gig!
With reference to Scott Walker (another genius), I have the Julian Cope
compilation of Scott's songs 'Fire Escape In The Sky' (The Godlike Genius Of
Scott Walker) - his subtitle not mine.
This album is long deleted and I think was the second of only 2 albums ever
issued on the (Bill Drummond owned?) Zoo label.
I first heard Julian Cope in 1980 when 'Reward' started to appear in the charts
although I sort of lost track until I heard 'Fried' in 1986, an album which I
think is possibly one the best I've ever heard by anyone.
I hope this jogs memories and/or starts discussions.
ps the first 2 Faust albums have just re-issued on CD, because I saw them
   last week.

Subject: The Mighty Wah
The Mighty Wah were I *believe* a result of changes to a band
called 'Wah Heat!" though I'm not too sure about that. What I
am sure about is that Pete Wylie, their ex-lead vox spent many
years as a dedicated ligger on the London 'scene'. He was
guaranteed to turn up at anything where there was a chance of
getting drunk for nowt. More recently he did actually crawl
up out of the gutter to get a fair-sized hit under his own
name. I think that was probably about a year ago but my
memory is rather hazy on the matter.
There have certainly been no latter day collusions between
Cope/McCulloch/Wylie. The latter two are certainly from
Liverpool, however Cope is a native of my home
neck-of-the-woods (well south a little) hailing from
Tamworth/Northampton.
                        Cheers, RobJ

The relationship between drummond & cope is an interesting one. Check out
"Bill Drummond Said" on one of cope's early LPs (World Shut Your Mouth I Think)
and "Julian Cope Is Dead" On drummond's laughable "The Man" LP. I think
drummond managed the Teardrops and the rift between them was long lasting
and good song writing material!

I've seen cope a few times - one of the better parts of the stageshows are
his giant perch-like mike stands. I've seen a few different ones.....some
with a 'step ladder' like form & another with a swiveling base, so he
drapes himself across it's arm & spins around. Quite weird to see his already
tall frame another 4 feet in the air!

COPE STUFF:
Dan. Nah, no connection between the Cope Gog and the Hammill
Gog. There are some hills (near Cambridge, I think)
called Gog Magog Hills. The Fear E.P. is brilliant
notwithstanding. It includes a weird monologue
instead of STARRY EYES, which is advertised on the
      sleeve.
Laurie.
I think Cope has shown signs of space-rock influence
before. The later Teardrops material was certainly
rim-of-space stuff. The extended version of WORLD
SHUT YOUR MOUTH ("and then you know what happens to
our garden...") was superb. Yes. Yes. Yes. If only
there were decent live recordings of those tours.
Brian.
WAH! now there was a band. WAH! HEAT at one time, but
always doomed to failure. The song COME BACK, available
re-worded on an NME cassette, detailed the end of their
record deal ("come back! Howard Jones can have hits!
come back! The Pretenders have hits! come back! we
believe in you!) A Pete Wylie vehicle. And as usual,
      the wheels came off.

WOW!!! There are more people out there that are Julian Cope fans!!
It's not so lonely anymore! First, I have a question. Who or what is
Sqwubbsy. Is it that big squishy thing pictured in PEGGY SUICIDE? If
not what is the thing in PS and again who or what is Sqwubbsy? What
does it mean?
My introduction to Julian was on MTV's 120 Minutes in '87 and '88.
They were playing EVE'S VOLCANO and 5 O'CLOCK WORLD. I filled it away
but didn't do anything about it then. About Feb. of '92 EVE'S VOLCANO
was haunting me so I went to find the song and the album. I then
became a Julian Cope fan. I don't have everything he's ever done but I
do have his big stuff. I had never heard THE TEARDROP EXPLODES (but I
had heard of them) until I bought FLOORED GENIUS.... They are interesting.
Again looking forward to great discussions about Cope!

I'm going to be in Florida for spring break, so there will be no one here to
run the list (which is not automated, by the way, but soon shall be (hopefully))
Anyway, keep the mail rolling and I'll send a big bacth out as soon as I get
back! Have fun in the mean time! :)
Also, the address has been changed to: [email snipped -- Trav]
That's kinda important. I'm re-writing all the mailing software, to eliminate
bugs and make the porcess a little easier for me.
