Notes

This is a collection of "odd-ball" songs finished in 2004. The first seven are alternate versions of previously released album tracks. The last four are wild, unreleased experiments that didn't fit on any of the albums.

Gear:

The songs were started using either Sonar or the Triton's sequencer and then finished using Sonar 3 or Sonar 4.

There's guitar on "Distorted Pod Loop", "Labor Day Long", "Treadmill", and "Hussy" (which features my friend David on guitar); and vocals on "Alive Again", "Treadmill", "Hussy", and "Enough" (which is a capella). The rest of the noises come from the Triton.

Songs

Distorted Pod Loop

This is the full version of "Distorted Loop". Giovanna hated it so much that I agreed to shorten it for Schmocial. I actually prefer this long version; it feels trancier and gives me enough time to get into the "feel" of the song. The short version just sort of comes and goes, without any real payoff.

User Comments:

  1. "My opinion over this song has changed over time. I think I really disliked when I first heard it. I sounded like a mangled-jumble. Listening it over time, it grew and now I really like it. It's definitely a memorable song!" - Giovanna (2010-07-16)

Second Friday Long

This is slightly longer than the Schmocial version. I don't notice much difference.

Labor Day Long

This is a bit longer than the Schmocial version. I think it has more of the noisy guitar at the end.

Islence Long

This is almost a minute longer than the Schmocial version, but it's hard to spot the differences. An extra chorus, perhaps?

Alive Again

This is the three original Triton+vocal takes of "I'm Alive", mixed together. It's shorter and slower than the Schmocial version, but has a more interesting vibe. I have no idea what most of the lyrics are; they're all jumbled together and full of delay.

Lyrics to "Alive Again":

[unintelligible chatter]

i'm alive
...
travis
travis, spare us
spare us
spare us
the voice
please spare us
...
travis, be silent
...
i'm alive
...
'cause everybody can resist

Early Instrumental

This isn't the first instrumental version of "Early"; there was actually an earlier one (no pun intended) that predated the vocal version (on Brroom). I later remixed it, to get rid of some of the boominess in the bass.

Contact Instrumental

This is the instrumental version of "Contact" (from Chuckadee). You can actually hear the sax solo this time!

Treadmill

I recorded this multi-track guitar and vocal improv in a few hours. Since I completed it in one day, it could have gone on Wonday, but I figured it didn't fit stylistically. I cemented its exclusion from Wonday by remixing it a couple days later, violating Wonday's single-day rule. So, where to put it? I didn't want to put it on Chuckadee; it was just too weird for it. I finally decided to put it on the odds-and-ends album (Extra Extra).

Well, what's it about? Nothing really. It's just me rambling on about something Giovanna said one day, about my life resembling a treadmill. I thought she had a point, and explored the idea in this song.

The second part of the song, which is vocals only, makes fun of avante guarde music.

Lyrics to "Treadmill":

haven't played guitar in over a year
there's the metronome and i'm beginning to fear
that you're expecting to hear
something good

can you shut the door
can you shut the door
  [repeats]
can you shut the door on your way out
can you shut the door on your way out
  [repeats]
can you shut the door
can you shut the door

if you are a guitar player
you will know that i'm just faking it
if you are a sitar player
you will know that i'm just pretending it

if you are a guitar player
you will know that i'm just portraying it
if you are a sitar player
you will know that i'm just betraying it

i'm not doing justice to anything
  (you're not doing anything really)
i'm not contributing anything
  (you're not contributing anything really)

i'm not creating
anything useful to anybody but me
and even then it's debatable
whether i'll listen to this again

i'm not left with much
i'm not left with much
  [repeats]
i'm on my treadmill

come on, travis play a different chord
but i can't 'cause i'm on my treadmill
i'm on my treadmill
i'm on my treadmill
  [repeats]

but i will show you what the treadmill can do
yes, i'll show you what the treadmill can do
i'll show you what the treadmill can do
i'll show you what the treadmill can do
  (can do, can do)

[the next three voices are simultaneous]

VOICE 1:
  i'm on my treadmill
  i'm on my treadmill
    [repeats]

VOICE 2:
step after step after step after step
    [repeats]
step after step after step after step back
    [repeats]

VOICE 3:
  i have decided
  i have asserted
  i have determinated
  i have observed
  the power of routine
  the power of determination
  the power of determination
  the power of the mind

  it's all in the mind
  it's all in the mind
    [repeats]
  controlling the mind
    [repeats]

A CAPELLA:

VOICE 1:
  step, step, step, step
  keep stepping, step, step, step
    [repeats]
just keep stepping, step, step, step
    [repeats]
step after step after step after step back
    [repeats]

VOICE 2:
  modern

  this is modern music
and if you do not like it
  then you're unsophisticated
  unsophisticated

  this is modern music
and if you do not like it
  then you're unsophisticated
  you're unsophisticated

  this is modern music
and if you do not like it
  then you're unsophisticated
i took me only five minutes
but i didn't have to do anything writing
but i didn't have to do anything planning
  it is all just improvising
  but i pretend it's intellectual
and i go on the radio
and say it took me so long
and if you don't understand it
  then you're retarded

  this is modern music
and if you do not like it
  then you're unsophisticated
  you're unsophisticated

  this is modern music
and if you do not like it
  then you're unsophisticated
  you're unsophisticated

    [repeats]

  this is modern music
  and if you don't appreciate
  then you are retardated
  you are retardated
  you are retardated
  you are retardated
  retardated

  this is a capella
and if you do not like it
then you have better taste than me

VOICE 2:
  have i made my point?
  have i made my point?
    [repeats]

VOICE 3:
no no no no no no no
no no no no no no no
    [repeats]

VOICE 2:
  you're making a big mistake
  you're making a big mistake
    [repeats]

VOICE 3:
  maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe
  maybe maybe maybe maybe maybe
    [repeats]

VOICE 2:
  i can achieve success
  i can achieve success
    [repeats]

VOICE 3:
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
    [repeats]
  success!

  1. "groovy!" - Giovanna (2010-07-16)

Trite

This is a long, rambly jam that didn't fit with the rest of Chuckadee. It was originally the second part of "Rusty".

Hussy

One night in late 2002 I invited my friend David to come and "jam" with me in my apartment. I programmed a simple, funky loop, and then David added some bluesy guitar over it. I tried to get him to sing, too, but he declined, so I ended up adding vocals and a bit of guitar myself.

When I finished the song in 2004, I made it much longer and added tons of keyboard solos. It still felt a bit empty, so I improvised some more vocals. It was all done very hurriedly, to finish up the Extra Extra album by the end of the year.

I'm surprised how catchy it turned out! The groove is actually catchy and the solos are super-energetic. It's amazing how a "throwaway" song like this (which is how I perceived it when I was working on it) can end up one of my favorites!

Lyrics to "Hussy":

okay
this is the last song finished in 2004
it's called hussy

oh yeah
hit it boy
play 'em chords
you're all right
uh-huh

uh-huh oh yeah oh yeah
uh-huh oh yeah oh yeah
uh-huh oh yeah oh yeah
uh-huh oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah

oh yeah
well that wasn't too bad
for a hasty solo
added to a long song
at the end of a long musical year

now we're gonna rewind to 2002
i've got some old vocals
and guitar to play for you
hit it david

david's afraid to sing
but travis has no such fear of the thing
because he knows he can't (nuh-uh)
he can't sing (not at all)
and i can't hear you
he just received a call (oh yeah)

the cell phone is ringing
there's the phone again
there's the phone again
there's the phone again

always ringing me
telemarketers (such a groovy groovy band)
always bugging me
always bugging me
always bugging me (uh-huh)

travis on guitar

oh yeah
that's the end of the 2002 bit
and we're just about to wind up the 2004 bit
with a bang, maybe
we'll end
with a bang, maybe (bang)
here's another solo by david
i forgot about it
keep in time, boy (bang, bang)
keep in time, boy (bang, bang)
oh jeez
this is what happens when you collaborate

travis? (yeah)
play us a solo (okay)
a decent solo (all right)
to make up for the lyrics

yeah
okay
good job
the song's almost over
i can't wait until it is over
'cause then i can do something else
always moving from song to song
from web page to web page
from email to email
from book to book
from movie to movie
from trail to trail
from day to day

always moving but that's okay
at least i'm not standing still
at least it's not a real treadmill
at least i'm doing okay
i'm certainly smiling today
  today, today
ok ok ok ok ok ok

we say enough, travis
enough, travis
this is enough, travis, enough travis
this is enough, travis, enough travis
this is enough, travis, enough travis

it's enough, it's enough
it's enough, it's enough
just finish the song
just finish the song
it's enough, it's enough
it's enough, it's enough
it's enough, it's enough
just finish that song

had enough, had enough
had enough, had enough
had enough, had enough
had enough, we had enough

so go home
get in bed
be a blob
stop doing things, travis
you're doing too much
you're just doing too much
five albums in one year?
that's crazy
  (it's ridiculous)
who do you think's gonna listen to all that stuff?
  (yeah travis, who?)
why do you make us listen to all that stuff, travis?
just
  (oh my god)
just settle down
  (just chill)
stop drinking so much coffee
  (just take a chilly-pilly)
stop trying so hard, travis
  (stop trying so hard)
relax, life is for relaxing
  (relax, relax)
life isn't for slaving away
  (don't be a slave)
you gotta relax
travis, you gotta relax
you gotta make it easy for other people to relax
travis, come on, please
just chill out travis!

Enough

This end-of album filler is three tracks of improvised audio. One track is wordless babble. The others are rambles that have nothing to do with each other. Since the two sets of lyrics are independent, I've listed them serially rather than trying to interlace them.

Lyrics to "Enough":

VOICE 1:
  what was the cat for?
why was there a cat meowing?
what does that have to do with the album?

  oh gosh travis
you're not talking again, are you?
  please don't, don't, don't
  don't, don't, don't
don't end the album on -
  just, oh gosh
  be quiet
  just be quiet
  okay
  this is the last thing
that you will hear from me in 2004
the last thing you'll hear from me
just happens to be really poor

  it's awful, it's awful
  why do you do it?
  why, travis?

why must you do these awful experiments?
  you're barely capable
of putting together a proper song
  with the best editing capabilities
and if you take away the editing
  and ad lib like this
  it ends up really bad
  really bad

but i guess that's okay if you're having fun
other people have fun by staying in bed all day
and dreaming and watching tv and eating
  and all that pathetic stuff

  yes, this is travis
and i shall end this album on a defiant note
the defiant note is e sharp
i am going attempt to sing an e sharp
so let's see if i can - oopsie
  did you hear that?
  this is an e sharp
    [cymbol]
thus ends the album in utter failure
as travis hits an f which is an e sharp
but which happened to be mapped to a drum keyboard

  this is
  this is the last album
this is the last impromptu on the album
why oh why can't you do something
  a little bit better travis?
why oh why must you do something so bad?
  so bad?
  so awful?
  because i can
  thank you

VOICE 2:
  meow meow meow meow
    [repeats]

need a metronome to do this
  without a metronome, it's pathetic
need a metronome to do this
  without a metronome, it's pathetic

  oh god
  oh god
  good job, travis

  my name is travis
  i can't sing
  i am travis
  i'm really smart
  travis smart
  very smart
i like to make music with my body parts

  my fingers and my lips
  and sometimes my toes
i like to use my ears too
  my name is travis

  my name is travis
  i am 31 years old
i am mature for my age
  i try to be respectable
but then i destroy any respectability
  by making things like this

  how can anyone respect somebody
  who does something like this?
how can you ever take this seriously?
  you can't, you can't
  good night!
