Survey Results - The The (1997)

There were 30 respondents. I was initially going to provide links within this summary page to each of the respondants' individual responses, but figured it would probably be overkill.

Sorry if these results are messy and full of typos!

2. Do you buy the artist or the albums? i.e. Do you tend to try to buy everything put out by a certain album, or do you tend to aim for only The Best albums out there? How often do you "max out" on bands?
If I really get a "kick" on one particular band I sometimes try to get everything.
Buy both artist and albums. If I really love the band or artist, I'll always get their new release. I also go on recommendations. I max out occasionally, tastes can be cyclical
I buy absolutely everything i find from the bands i like and the best albums from the others i'm interested in (sorry for the ambiguity).
I buy what my economic possibilities allow me in both ways.
Usually I buy the album. I can't afford to buy too many CDs and there are too many artists and styles I like to only buy certain bands' work.
I try to buy the best out there, but sometimes my judgement sucks. Anybody want a copy of Bodacious by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper?
I buy the album first, but if I like it a lot I get curious. Define max out - if you mean buying the entire discography, then i've probably done it with 10-12 bands
A little of both, if I hear an album I like, I buy it. If I really like it, I'll buy others by that artist. As far as "maxing out", I've only done that on two bands, the The and Led Zeppelin
Depends on the Band and the album, For example I'll buy any Pink Floyd album I can get my hands on (including solo tries), but while I love the album Laid by James I haven't felt compelled to go buy anything else by them.
Depending on the artist, I frequently buy everything if I sense a winner.
It varies, sometimes I'll buy something new 'cause I like the sound, mostly though I just try and catch up with old stuff that I've been wanting to buy. Most new music that I've heard is crap (Guess I need to find something besides the radio for exposure to new stuff.) so lately I've been concentrating on stocking up on my favorites rather than getting new stuff.
The albums unless there are new tracks on the singles rather than remixes and that also depends on whose remixing ???
More often than not the artist than than the music - how many people will listen to Guns Sluts before buying it?
The Artist
Artist usually. I've "maxed out" on many bands including most of the ones I listed above.
A bit of both... I can be fanatical about certain bands but I will also buy albums I think are good although I may not be a fan of that particular artist (ie. Smashing Pumpkins 'Siamese Dreams', Prince's 'Sign o' the Times' and My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless'). Sometimes I find myself sticking with an artist that may have long lost their lustre but because of their wonderful past recordings, I keep buying their sub-par work (ie. that damn Frank Black, R.E.M. and Morrissey)
I guess I buy the artist
Pretty maxed out on bands listed above, but not aside from that.
Um...yes
Try to find what's good, not much lately. Max out on the The only.
The artist usually but if i hear an album is good from someone, i give it a try
Best and favourite albums only. Never maxed out yet.
Mostly, the artist. if an album sounds good, though, it doesnt matter (on most occasions) who its by
Artist usually. Maxed out on about half of the above.
For the Top 10 List, I buy pretty much everything they do. For the rest, I will buy the album based on its own merit. There are many artists who have flashes of brilliance (e.g. Pulp, Hunters & Collectors), but can't sustain it ... I guess if they did, they'd be on the Top 10 list!
Artist, only sometimes.
A little of both. Have maxed out on 4 or 5.
Artist, though I can't pass up a good album
Artist. I'm the same way with books and actors.
3. Will an excellent sounding dub suffice or do you always try to obtain originals? Frequently? Occasionally?
(7) Originals
It varies.
I don't mind dubbing if the qualitiy is good. Makes for great compilations too.
Used to tape a lot (700 copies!) but now, if someone let's me an album i buy
I generally only buy cd's, not always for sound quality but for durability - i drive a lot and used to melt a lot of tapes
A dub will do in a pinch and in the car, but I eventually get the originals.
Accept Bootlegs
Originals, Mobile Fidelity if available
I rarely, if ever, listen to tapes at all so I tend to stick to the originals.
A lil bit of both, the remixer counts
Usually originals
I'll buy originals eventually if I dig the artist but I get into many new bands thru dubbed recordings from friends.
I love live stuff...anything goes. I have lots of Live Tori Amos..just getting into The The
Not very discriminating ears, so dubs are fine.
Dubs will do, until I can get the original
Try for originals, but a dub will suffice.
Almost exclusively originals.
Originals I guess
Originals unless unavialable
Tape decks are finicky and frustrating, so I go for CDs.
4. Do you collect bootlegs (or foreignly produced live CDs)?
(12) No
Yes
Did when I collected albums...but too expensive anymore. I will buy an import if it's not released here.
Occasionally
Again, not unless it's something i really want to hear - not for the novelty of owning rarities
Yes, for some bands
not really
If I see one I'm really interested in and it's not too outrageously priced I'll buy it, dunno if you'd call that "collecting" though.
occasionaly when i wanna splash out
I would - if I knew someone who had them!!!
A bit of Joy Division, but not usually
Yes, I love the Live stuff
No, though I have given some as gifts (they cost too much!!!)
Not collect, but will make the purchase if it is worth it.
Occasionally
Only if its Matt.
Yes, but only for a few bands.

B. Are you a gig goer?

(4) Yes
(4) No
Absolutely... love live music
Occasionally
No. There aren't too many bands out there touring who are worth my $20 (or $30).
As often as possible, yes
Not really
Only during that time when all the good bands tour at once.
When I get the chance, with work and school eating up most of my time I'm restricted to weekend shows, with occasional exceptions for truly outstanding bands (Thethe included).
Try and be
Rarely. Only SMALL venues.
No, not my scene
Not as much as I have been in the past... or would like to be in the future.
Yes. At times
I try to be
Sporadically
1. On average, how many music concerts do you attend per year?

Used to attend 20 on average, but now I'm lucky to see 8-10
In the last couple of years, probably less than 10. Eek, what happened?
As many as there are decent groups in my city.
2 - Classical
Not as many as I used to! These days maybe 3-5 per year.
2-classical
varies... whenever i can afford it
2-3 "bug" shows. Probably 10-12 counting bar bands
Used to be 20-30, now 3-5 ... am I getting that old?
2. Have you ever "followed" a band's tour? What's the largest number of shows you've seen by a single band? What band?
(6) No
Never seen a band twice
The KINKS - 25 shows spanning almost 15 years
The Cure - 3
I'm not a follower
I've never followed a band. Something about having a job. But I used to see Boingo ever Halloween at Irvine Meadows years ago.
I saw u2's zoo tv tour 3 times (a girlfriend-related thing) and nin's downward spiral tour 5 times
No, things like life get in the way.
I've seen sponge about 12 times. Many times they were the opening act for other bands and I liked their live show a lot so I bought their cd. However I didn't like it all that much but I still like their live show.
3, U2
I've seen Bad Religion 4 or 5 times. twice - theTHE
Never followed, at least not very far. Seen Stevie Ray Vaughan something like 8 or 9 times, seen the Cure 4 times, seen Skinny Puppy 4 times.
Never followed a tour. I've seen the The twice though!
No... although I've seen a couple of bands more than once... alas, NOT theThe
Both tours by the The.
Never followed a tour. Saw pink Floyd a few times
Never followed. 3-Hoodoos, 3-Trip Shakespeare
Never followed (money, job). I've probably seen The Hopping Penguins (local Toronto ska band, who are way too much fun live) 30+ times.
5-Seen Spirit of the West, 2-Barnenaked Ladies
3-Sting, a few others 2 times
3-My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, 3-Concrete Blonde, 3-Robert Plant
Never followed, 2 - Bela Fleck.
3. Do you make bootlegs? Do you ever bring tape recorders to concerts, even if it's just for your personal enjoyment?
(15) No
Went once, and heard more then people round me than the band.
Never made a bootleg.
If I had direct access to the sound board and a portable DAT I might consider it, otherwise why bother with a crappy dub from a cheap tape recorder.
No, tried once sounded like shite
No - if I could get away with it
No, but I've been thinking about giving it a try.
No, it would sound shitty so I wouldn't enjoy it. Like someone else said -- if I had access to the soundboard and a DAT I'd probably make one, but just for me.
Only for a local band of which I can't get enough, and even then I ask first.
Brought a dictaphone to a concert once but the sound quality bit.

C. Are you a musician?

(7) No
Not even close.
Fancy being one
not really...haven't seriously played an instrument since Jr. High...
No, way to fiddly
Not recently
If that's what you'd call it
Not really
Yes, casual though.
1. What instruments do you play? What type of music?
I sing (not professionally), I write lyrics (not professionally), I used to play the BASS Violin (not in years)
Guitar. Rock pop.
I played the cello for five months in fifth grade. I learned "Hot Cross Buns" and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". I Rocked!
Kazoo, triangle, and tamborine. Uh, music?
Sometimes i play on the linoleum
School choir, harmonica (I'm no Johnny Marr however), anything I can Guitar, Tuba. Oompha Blues ...Although I have been dabbling with a homemade didgeridoo...
Guitar - will and do try anything - electric & acoustic bass, six & twelve string
Recorded several songs, one track available on a 4AD covers compilation entitled THURTENE. The "band" is Independent Mechanical Industry, the song recorded was "Swing Like a Baby" by the Wolfgang Press.
I've taken piano and trumpet lessons at an early age, to the detriment of humanity.
Clarinet, banjo
Guitar. Anything I can get my fingers to play
Piano. Whatever I can manage
Used to play sax
I played trumpet in a school band for 7 years.
Piano - classical (not very well), Guitar - modern rock, classic rock (not very well)
Best percussive (Piano/keyboard, guitar, drums), so-so on brass (trumpet, mellophone, French Horn, trombone), piddly on wood winds (sax, flute). School bands (marching, symphonic, jazz) for 7 years. Playing solo or with friends since 1986, mostly jazzy rock originals.
2. How often do you practice? For how long each practice?
(2) Never
Very rarely (got to get a new one)
Until the novelty wears off
Sometimes 20 hours in a week, other times I won't pick the thing up for a month
No speaky englishia
When the need hits me - until I'm bored or can't figure out a song
Errmm?? Whats that??
Whenver im home
Every day or once every 2 months
Currently I don't practice. Every month or so I sit down and noodle for a while and record myself. Wish I had more motivation!
3. Are you in a band? How many gigs have you played? For money?
(3) No
A dream that never came to fruition
Used to. 30 gigs. For fun.
Yes, We have played around 20. Only three times for money
Was in a band. A couple, didn't loose that much money ;)
Played a few times in a friends band (usually when drunk)
Used to be in a couple non-school bands back in the early 1990s. We only gigged twice, unless you count a time my friend and I went carolling door to door with keyboard and sax! No money - we should have paid them, seriously.
4. How many hours of your music have you recorded?
(3) None
2
None, we just play for the love of the music
< 1
45+ in my life. My cousin has 30+ hours from the late 80s and I have my most recent 15.
5. Have you ever sold some of your music?
(5) No
Sold three best-of tapes in 1993 for $5 each. So, figure 45 hours, $15 total, that's 30 cents per hour of recorded music.
6. Do you have a web page? Any other place we can get info about your band?
(3) No
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/9921 More personal insights and a question/answer game called Gutter
Yes, No

D. Any other involvement in music? Are you a manager? A producer? A music-related web page producer? A reviewer? Do you work in a music store? Are you a DJ?

(2) No
Was a DJ at Club 950 in Chicago for a number of years, did several The The feature nights with giveaways. Also used to review albums for college paper including Mind Bomb review.
I'm a DJ for our student station 88.3 WMTS Murfreesboro TN. If you are in the area tune in. I play This is The Day at the beginning of my show every week and always 1-2 more songs by The The.. Also the Executive Secretary for our station. Lots of fun, but don't get paid.
I used to review albums for my school paper
Used to DJ years ago. Then I had to start working for living
Used to be a DJ at WPRK, Rollins College, 91.5 FM (Orlando area) DJ'ed at local club in Gainesville for a few months (got tired of having to play Skinny Puppy all the time)
I was once a manager at music store many years ago. (For the record, Junior, that was a kushy job)
Used to be a DJ.
Journalist, write about music.
Used to be a DJ. Run UNME
