Hi!

Sorry I've been so slow to update things on here. I've been concentrating on the Digital Sex web pages.

I have a bunch of stuff to add to the IPR site - hopefully I'll get to it soon!

I heard a Scenic song in a movie or TV show a while ago. Don't remember which it was, though. Anyone remember?

Oh yeah, whatever happened to Fourwaycross? I'd love to get some of their early stuff on CD - so far all I have on CD is On the Other Hand. Anyone know if Brandon and Bruce plan to re-release any of their vinyl productions on CD?

I checked out Parasol mail order (http://www.parasol.com/) - pretty nice, but I wish it had a dedicated IPR section to their catalog (I couldn't find one). I'll try to add something like that here.

One of these days!

Paul, how's your Trudge site coming along?

Dirk, I don't know of any IPR bands' pages other than those on my main IPR page. I'll try to do another thorough IPR search shortly.

Also, if anyone knows any IPR related URLs, please email me - I'll add them to the main page.

Oh yeah, here's something Chieko mailed me a long time ago, and I forgot to post it. Just found it today.

In 1987 Thom Fuhrmann of SAVAGE REPUBLIC began work on a project called AUTUMNFAIR, recording two songs with partner Scott Feemster which appeared on the October Country compilation LP on Nate Starkman & Son. He later teamed up with Val Haller to record a further body of work in 1988 from which these six tracks have been taken. Representing a more intense step away from the previous release, these songs show the power and creativity of a musical endeavor which continues to evolve, and which deserves the attention of those interested in alternative underground music.

As per http://www.angelfire.com/fl/MiseryOfCities/Abecedarains.html, is the IPR "Other Side Of The Fence" double EP still available?

Thanks.

Hi Trav,

I like the look of the new improved IPR pages! Can't wait to see more. Ask, and you shall receive any catalog info you need. I have em all, going back to 1985 or so. The Abecedarians double 10" listed below should still be available, and based on what Bruce told me, from Parasol. AB-CD is out of print and darn tough to come by. Developments at my Trudge site have been at a standstill, but there are lots of nifty photos to look at!

Hey all just thought I'd drop a line and say hey, I've been a long time IPR enthusiast, along with having a major interest in 17 Pygmies, woo, For Against, and alot of other bands that showed up on IPR. I am parting with alot of my records and printed materials as to lighten my tremendous load. All my vinyl is excellent, so if you guys are looking for something in particular that can't be had from IPR or anywhere else please let me know, it's a very good chance that I have it. Also I was curious if Bruce or ipr have an email address for questions. It seems unheard of that they don't have a website, of all people I'd think they would. Anyway it's hard to find people totally into IPR so it's nice to see you all here talking about the coolest label of all time. Laters

So here it is late on a Monday, should have gone home hours ago and somehow I ended up at Travis' site for IPR. Since I haven't seen it for about 9 months I was pleasantly surprised to see such an impressive thing here. Good work, Travis, and thank you! I appreciate all the energy you are putting into this, and if there's anything I can do to help please let me know. My time is limited, but I'm glad to help out with info whenever I can ( I just sent a bunch of corrections to Martin's SAVAGE REPUBLIC website from Germany, which should help get it a little more up to date).

Dirk, I've never heard of the "Broken Wings" CD -- someone else must be using the name SCENIC, which is a shame. Good name, though, so I'll have to get more ambitious about getting new SCENIC music out there. We've been working on a lot of new material over the past year, but my energy has been of necessity more focused on my printing and design business. IPR has never been enough of a money-maker for me to be able to afford to do it full time, though I still have the feeling that someday it could. The last IPR release was the "Shelflife" CD by FOR AGAINST, released earlier this year thru a licensing arrangement with World Domination Recordings. We'd hoped to go into production on CD re-issues of both albums by RED TEMPLE SPIRITS, as well as a CD from THE INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF TIBET (William Faircloth and Dallas Taylor from RTS with more recent recordings, in a tribal folk psychedelic vein, cassette version with letterpress cover should be still available from Parasol) several months back, but World Dom's financing dried up and they've been in the process of getting new financing and distribution. Things look like they'll be in place by January, but I've learned not to expect too much, and that it'll happen when it happens. In the meantime I'm working on a 7" ep of tracks from STEREOLAB, something that's been in the discussion stages for about 4 years, since SCENIC opened for them at the Troubadour in L.A. in 1995. I'd hoped to get this out earlier this year, but finances were too tight. If all goes well it'll be ready in January, and Parasol will be selling copies. Apparantly the groop have put the three tracks on "Aluminum Tunes," the compilation just released by Drag City, though I've not picked up a copy of that yet to verify. Which is a drag (no pun intended) but I still think people will want the IPR release (especially since it'll come with a cool letterpress stamp sheet). Anyway, IPR's situation at present is that I'm not in a financial position to continue to release records without the help of someone like World Domination. Fortunately Dave Allen (former GANG OF FOUR bassist who runs the label) is very supportive of IPR, and once he has his new financing and distribution in place, I expect to make plans for numerous new releases. With a bit of luck, SCENIC's next album will be out by Summer of '99, tentatively titled "The Spheres," and it's a bit more abstract and ambient (in an old PINK FLOYD kind of way rather that an "Electronica" kind of way). We've got several pieces demoed, as well as rehearsal recordings of several improvisations that will be developed and recorded soon. We also have another group of material we've been working on which I hope to be recording later in the '99. This will be a suite of songs (similar to "Incident At Cima," though more melodic) about the Kaipirowits Plateau in southern Utah, just north of Lake Powell. This is some of the most beautifully desolate landscape I've ever seen, and I've been photographing it recently as well as working on developing the song ideas. There is some other material SCENIC has been working on, some songs of James' and Robert's, as well as a few songs by Mark Mastopietro, our newest member, who is quite a creative guitarist. Perhaps some of this material will be recorded for an EP, though it's a little too early to tell. We've also been working on some snippets of material for several indie short films, which is giving us some good experience in scoring soundtrack work, an area we're interested in further exploring. So there is a lot of potential for new SCENIC material in the coming year, once financing and scheduling falls into place. As for other IPR releases: when things come together with World Domination, we're talking about CD re-issues of a number of past IPR releases, and we'll probably start with FOR AGAINST, ABECEDARIANS, THE DENTISTS, and SAVAGE REPUBLIC. Plus there's new material -- FOR AGAINST will start recording a new album in the new year, and RED TEMPLE SPIRITS are working on new things as well. For those of you interested in RTS, both William Faircloth and Dallas Taylor of the band are also living in Sedona, and have been here almost as long as I have. And we didn't coordinate all moving here from L.A., it just happened. After several years of working as THE INVISIBLE OPERA COMPANY OF TIBET, they've decided to go back to using their old name, since they've gone from the folk-flavored psychedelia back to a harder-edged sound. William works part time for me at Independent Project Press -- he's my main printer now, so most of the CD and record packages that have come off the press the past 4-5 years have been at least partially printed by him (meaning he stands there and sticks the paper in by hand, making sure the ink levels are correct, and other such exciting things). And RTS sublet rehearsal space from us next door to the print shop, so I get to hear them work on new material whenever I work late on a rehearsal night. Though they have trouble finding a decent bass player who'll show up for practice regularly they carry on, and have some good new songs.

Alright, I've gone on long enough. I'm happy to be able to fill in some up-to-date details for all of you who are interested. Thanks for being so supportive, and I'm looking forward to working on more music and a lot of new releases in the coming years.

Best wishes, BRUCE

Trav tripalot.com/travis Tue Nov 10 12:04:07 EST 1998

Hey guys! Bruce, what a surprise! Thanks a million for all that info!

Just a quick note.

First of all, thanks for posting, guys! And thanks for your patience. I have a billion IPR-related emails I still need to respond to, and a TON of information (old and new) from Parasol and IPR that I'm trying to assemble into a complete IPR-related catalog. (I don't know if catalog is the right term. It'll be more like an encyclopedia. Okay, that's it, then. The IPR Encyclopedia! I like it!)

I've decided to put the IPR Encyclopedia together off-line, as a PDF file or a Word document (probably the former). This will speed up the catalog-building process because my new OCR software works much better in making PDF/Word-type documents than HTML documents. I'll eventually convert the PDF/Word version into HTML so that people can view it on-line. But I warn you; it will be HUGE!

There are other reasons than efficiency that make me want to designe the Encyclopedia for PDF rather than HTML. For one, PDF tends to *look* better than HTML. It prints out better and long PDF documents are easier and more fun to read than long HTML documents. Plus, it's fun to download something and read it at your leisure, without having to stay connected to the Internet. You can be more relaxed about it.

Also, I don't want to worry about hyperlinks. My PDF->HTML conversion tools should resolve the URLs automatically for me (like URLs for a band's web site). But I don't want a maze of hyperlinks within the document. I want the document to have the feel of the old catalogs - you dig through them for treasure. I don't want to encourage MTV-style viewing practices. I want people to feel like they can print it out and not be missing out on anything. I want it to seem like a BOK, not a web page.

Anyway, I'll keep y'all posted on my progress on the IPR Encyclopedia... (I like saying that!)

Trav tripalot.com/travis Wed Mar 10 09:57:05 EST 1999

Hey guys!

Okay, first of all, I now have around 40 catalog updates from Parasol and IPR that I need to incorporate into the Encyclopedia.

Even though I haven't gottten any feedback about the Encyclopedia itself yet, I have, in these past two months, come up with a list of ideas:

1. I need to move FrontPage off my my old computer and onto my new computer.

Up until now, I've been using my P-133 for web site work, scanning, and printing; and the P2-350 for email, web browsing, programming, and games. I use the P2-350 daily, but the P-133 sometimes goes a week without being turned on.

This means that it takes extra effort to do web work, since I gotta turn on the old computer, move my comfy chair over to it, plug the phone line into its modem instead of the new computer's modem, etc. Since no one's been clamouring for IPR updates, that inconvenience threshold has not been exceeded in the past 2 months.

If I move my web work to my new computer, web site updates are far more convenient for me. Since most of the IPR updates involve Parasol catalogs that are in my email on my new computer, this makes even more sense.

The problem with moving my web work over to my new computer is that there's less and less reason to use the old computer. I don't want to sell it, because it's nice having a backup, but I don't want it to collect dust like my other computers. I can't use it as a print server, because for some reason I cannot access the modem and comm port [through which I have a null modem to my old computer] at the same time on my new computer.

Does anyone else use 2 computers? How have you made the old one genuinely useful?

2. An HTML version of the Encyclopedia is important.

Currently the Encyclopedia is only in MS-Word format. Judging by the lack of feedback from people, I'd say that developing it in Word and not providing an immediate HTML version was, in retrospect, a mistake on my part. Here's why an HTML version would be important:

a) Not everyone has or is willing to download a WordViewer (or Word itself).

b) Search engines cannot see into a Word document. This means someone looking for Autumnfair information would never get pointed to the Encyclopedia.

c) I have lots of URLs listed in the Encyclopedia. It'd make sense to have them hyperlinked. Right now you have to cut and paste URLs into a browser.

d) The HTML version might actually look better to some people than the Word version. This is because people can customize their WWW browsers to suit their tastes and visual ability. [I recently switched Netscape from using Times Roman as a default font to Arial. It makes a world of difference; it's much more fun to read pages now!]

I didn't intially consider the above to be disadvantages of the Word format. This is because I was aiming at a "book" feel instead of a "web page" feel.

However, I've since realized that not everyone is going to want to treat this document the same way I would treat it. Not everyone's gonna print out a 100+ page IPR Encyclopedia. Many people are probably going to be using it to search for specific information rather than browsing by the fire.

Because some [most?] people are bound to treat the IPR Encyclopedia like a web page, I also need to start treating it like a web page.

Gotta run. Those are my thoughts for the day. Sorry they are so scatter and rambly. If you have any ideas on what format you would prefer, please post 'em so we can discuss.

Thanks!

Trav

Good news ... there is an ad in the recent issue of Big Takeover for "Spheres" ... a Scenic cd forthcoming late 1999.

IPR = Independent Project Records.

They're a record label based in Arizona, with Bruce Licher being one of the main driving forces behind it. He also was in an industrial band called Savage Republic and has within the last couple years started up a new band called Scenic. You could consider it a lighter, smoother version of Savage Republic. Soothing instrumental music, very "organic". You may have heard one or two of their songs either on TV, in commercials, or in the movies.

Dudes and dudesses, I am no longer a student as of Tuesday (got my degree), and in celebration I am taking it easy (working part time) for a few weeks. Eventually I hope to move out west. No, not to Arizona -- too hot and far from the sea! I'm thinking more like the Northwest. Any IPR fans up there in Oregon, Washington, or Alaska? I'd love to hear from you.

I will be updating these pages very shortly. A couple days ago I wrote a simple search engine. There's a demo of it here. Replace "cope/rail-on" with "ipr" and it should allow you to search the ipr web site for keywords. Please let me know what you think!

My scanner is poised to continue work on the rest of the IPR Encyclopedia.

I've been a fan of Alison's Halo, Scenic and Half-String for a few years now but I've never heard Savage Republic...which album should I start with?

Also, any info on the independent films that Bruce scored would be great...I'm a film editor and would be very interested in "analyzing" the job he/they did. Since I like Scenic so much I'm sure I wouldn't be disappointed.

travis,

Start off with Tragic Figures!! A lot harder edge to it than Scenic. The CD has the bonus cuts of Film Noir and O Adonis, which kind of segues to Trudge EP, Ceremonial, Jamahiriya, and Customs (some of this is available on record or cassette - see http://parasol.com). Also, check out 17 Pygmies. These are all the embryonic stages of Scenic. (Bruce Licher was also in Bridge, Them Rhythm Ants [I think], and other bands). Check out the Independent Records Project Encylopedia that Trav has put together. Very good work!! Check it out at his hyperlink below.

Speaking of the IPR Encyclopedia, I added I-L today to the HTML version. Slowly, slowly, slowly it's coming along. I changed the format a bit for the recent additions. I used colored text to make the sources of information stand out. Sometimes I think it looks better than the old format (A-H), but sometimes I think it looks goofy. What do you think? Do you like the colored text? How about the horizontal bars between entries?

I also changed the font from the default to Veranda. Personally, I think there's a lot to be said for Times New Roman. It goes with the old-fashioned feel of the IPR catalogs. If I had to force a font on people, should it be Times New Roman, Veranda, Courier, what? Suggestions welcome.
