Subject: Krautrock Sampler
Just finished reading an excerpt from Julian's forthcoming book, _Krautrock
Sampler: One Head's Guide To the Great Kosmische Musik, 1968 Onwards._ This
was part two of a two-part series that The Wire, a UK music magazine,
featured in their December and January issues. (Sorry for the perceived
tardiness of this review-- us N. American readers tend to get our copies of
The Wire one month later.) Part One was an overview of the Krautrock scene
that exploded in the late 60's, while Part Two was a brief history of Can.
Julian's writing in these articles is terrific. Much tighter than his
lyrics, yet still retaining a sense of passion (unfortunately, an uncommon
feature in much of The Wire's expository writing.) It struck me as a oneway
conversation with a friend raving about artists who deserve to be heard.
The only thing missing was a soundtrack-- I was drooling over the picture of
his collection of rare German vinyl-- and, of course, the much necessary
accessories for the waterbong which Julian is proudly displaying in the same
picture. ;)
Anyway, I'm asking fellow listers to keep their eyes open for any signs of
this book. There was no mention of publishing house or release date. Also,
I'd be very, very grateful if anyone could possibly set me up with a vinyl
copy of _Autogeddon_.
Thanks,
Doug

Hi
I've beeen a big Cope/Teardrops fan for a long time (saw them in NYC in '81
the first time)
But, I have to say that Autogedden really let me down, and from what I've
read about QE. I hope Julian isn't starting to beleive his legend a bit too
much.

Hello Cope listers!
I just got Britt's version of "Cut My Friend Down" and it's great!
So far we have 3 Cope covers ready for the compilation tape, and a couple
more on the way. If anyone else wants to record a cover, it's never too
late... As I said before, you don't even have to play an instrument.
Singing, reading, or even humming is game! :) So far the 2 tapes I have
received are VERY well done, singing-wise, music-wise and recording-wise!
Anyway, keep sending in your covers! I guess I'll extend the deadline
some more... :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yes, release date for new For Against album: 23 January, 1995. Let me
know if you want me to send you ordering info.
And I must say: the new BMG's alternative catalog is mudch improved! They
even have Floored Genius in there! Plus lots of cool british stuff. Just
sift through the nasty American grunge clones and there are some really
nice bands in there for once!
gotta run!

Travis (and Culture Bunker type peoples):
A recommendation - anyone interested in our Julian would probably get a
fair kick out of New Zealanders the Greg Johnson Set. Don't know how
available their music is overseas, but if you do happen across any
(expecially their album Everyday Distortions) try it. You should like it.
BTW - the initial recording of Head Hang Low is done (mix not yet done),
and I'm going to start work on Great Dominions ASAP...

hello, drudes.
I haven't said a lot lately, but since i have a few minutes on my hands
i'd like to say a few things. most importantly, i'd like to express my
disagreement with those who think Queen Elizabeth sucks. It doesn't.
julian has finally brought to fruition a concept that has been present in
the corners of his songs ever since "flipped out on LSD" (or whatever
that mostly instrumental teardrops demo is really called). he has taken
'rite' from its earthly chains and unleashed it into space where it
belongs. have you listened to the SOUNDS? i'm not angry at how people
judge the album, but i do want to suggest that it be listened to. take a
box of cough pills and lie down and get into it. and if you fall asleep,
pay attention to your dreams.

The new Milkbone is due out next week. Additionally, CDNow.com has M.C.L.

positive about it, except Jack Rabid told me it was his personal favorite

the last couple of tracks are superb, well worth the price of the album

Well, this is intersting news! I tried subscribing to the American Cope
list, but no response yet. Maybe it's manual like mine? (not automated)
If they only have a couple subscribers, they might simply want to subscribe
to this list. That way they can inform us of releases and at the same time
get feedback from us. If that was their agenda to begin with, then there is
indeed no use of a second Cope list. But, if they want somehow to be in
CONTROL of what is posted, well, they just might want a list of their own.
I'll keep you all informed as to the "merger" - wow, this is exciting!

To Jane who wanted info on how to get Droolian and Skellington--it's a real
pain to order stuff from Kak Ltd if you live in the states. They only accept
pounds streling and that probably means you have to go through a bank and do
an international money order, which is expensive as hell. I ended up paying
like 40 bucks for my CD of Skellington II. What I recommend is that you call
this CD mail order place in Britain called BeeBee's that somebody on this list
once mentioned. I got Queen Elizabeth mailed to me for a mere $19, postage
included! You do have to have a Visa or Mastercard though.
To reach BeeBee's dial 0245323676 (or something like that--I always forget
the international codes)

Okay, on the "merge" - I am curious what you guys think...
Our options are:
1) subscribe AMERICAN RECORDINGS to THE CULTURE BUNKER.
pros: quick, easiest for them as well as me, fewer people displaced to
a different list (I am supposing they have fewer people)
   cons: see pros for #2
2) kill THE CULTURE BUNKER altogether, subscribe everyone to the AMERICAN
   RECORDINGS list.
pros: they might have list-serve, which is easier on everyone in the long
run. Also, I have no idea how long I am going to retain computer
access on this account. It's my dad's work's computer, and that's
why i'm still on there even though it's doubtable i will ever work
         at swa again :(
cons: all of you guys have to switch over to the AMERICAN list. I'll
have to transfer all my backissues, etc to the AMERICAN list.
Well, it has to be done someday...
3) keep the 2-lists
pros: lets us the list managers be lazy
   cons: redundancy
4) anything else???
ideas welcome

Well, (1) and (2) mean we don't miss any information, without getting the
double-up we'd have if we subscribed to both. If there's doubt about
whether you can keep your account, option (2) is probably better. And if
they do have list-serve, better still! (probably still not enough mail for

If you want to subscribe to the American Recordings list (which,
presumably, you do), then you can do it by accessing the Cope Home Page at
American Recordings and going to "mail". It's fairly self-explanatory from
there.
Alternatively, according to American you can subscribe by mailing
cope@american.recordings.com and including this in the main body of your

There are 31 people on the American Recordings List (I asked the server).
Have you tried to contact the lsit maintainer? What does she/he say?

They use a "Majordomo" server, whatever that is. Is that a
listserv thing? The Culture Bunker has a nice flavour, The AmRec
one seems a bit corporate/opportunist. They seem to have set up
LOADS of mailing lists for loads of bands, but aren't really big
fans of the bands.
Maybe you can simply add the American Recordings list to this one
FOR THE TIME BEING, and transfer over to it completely if you
lose access to this computer. That would be easy enough.
>3) keep the 2-lists
Hmmmmm... I'll have to post stuff twice/get stuff twice.

Have you gotten with American about any of the options. It seems
to me that they could just maintain a web page for Julian with
a pointer to your list on it. Unless you're wanting to give up
heading this thing by now, that seems okay. They do nice Web
work over there and I can't imagine they have any or much more
info on what's going on with Julian these days than this list
does. When I spoke to someone there recently, they couldn't even
find out what was going on with him.

i talked to [the server's sysop] today - she says I'll be able to
keep my account as long as I wish. She also is willing to help me set up
listserv if you guys are interested. I have been fixing up my batch files
recently, so things are relatively smooth. But the listserv option is
up to you guys...
no word yet from the american recordings group. i subscribed, but nothing
james - i'm anxious to hear your cover versions. you can send some originals
too if you want!
as for www - anyone know much about lynx?
i'm having to vt102 it
:)

When I sent out the above email to the list, the SMTP mail server I was using at the time spat back a bunch of error messages at me, having to do with not being able to mail out 80+ email messages simultaneously. Then the mail server completely went dead. The Culture Bunker had become too big.

Frustrated by the difficulties with the mail server, the problems associated with linking up with the American Recordings list, and the increasing pressures of finding a job (I was nearing graduation), I called it quits.

For a while.

During the next year and a half the American Recordings list limped along, often going for months at a time without a single post. In October 1996, I started up Rail On!, this time a web page guestbook-style bulletin board instead of a mailing list. The Culture Bunker is back!
