HI All - Am I the only person who is having some problems with
Autogeddon? I don't thikn its a bad album, just not as brilliant
as the last two. It starts of OK, then the middle couple of tracks are
just dull - especially track 4, which sounds like a Wedding Present song!
It picks up again with the last couple of tracks.
A lot of it sounds like demo stuff/whimsy. And I don't like the cover
either - the photo is OK, but th ecover just looks cheap.
I don't want to upset anyone, but I feel just a little let down with this lp.
I've had it for a week, but only bothered playing it a couple of times.
Maybe if I persevere?

Re: Mikef's dis-appointment with Autogeddon.
Hi Y'all.
Can't see anyone sprawling with abandoned indignation after Mike's
confession. Leastwise I hope not.
I try not to rate things against each other, because there's too much
other stuff that dictates how we feel about things. Think of Lester
Bangs' criticism if you know it. Is it good, or does it suck? That's
the limit of objectivity, and even that's no help. (No fence intended
on Travis poles, they reveal more than just a bunch of ratings).
As in my favourite Jazz Butcher songs are Girlfriend and Racheland: I
have no idea how they rate outside my experience, because I can't
think of Girlfriend without finding myself on the floor in a sunlit
room in the summer of 86 (or was it 87? trust me, the year is not
important) or of Racheland without thinking of a final separation and
a drive to the airport. Context is everything. I know I'm taking an
old stance, but it's apposite.
No Sir, can't say I'm playing Autogeddon as loud as I used to play
Jehovahkill. No pop nous on display, say Vox. I agree with their
review; if it wasn't awkward it wouldn't be true. Love the first side
and wade through the second. Better than Skellington 2. Never the
pure blue heaven of World Shut Your Mouth. But as the song goes,
nostalgia will lead us astray. It's different every time with Julian,
and that's what makes it all worthwhile.
I appreciate it, and I'll keep buying Julian's line. I'm ever so glad
that he's there. Does this make sense? It's really quite warm here
at the moment. Paranormal weather in the West Country. Yeah, I like
it (Autogeddon). I wouldn't rush around and foist it on my popfriends
though. Maybe a select few. (I foisted several people with World,
especially Elegant Chaos, that Liverpool-Tamworth signature toon for
1984.)
I shall of course rush out and buy Creaming Off the second it emerges,
although I will try to follow Jules' advice and seek out the strangely
shaped record shop from which charts never return. If they put 'Mik
Mak Mok' on it, I shall buy several copies. You know it makes sense.
Er, what was I talking about?
love Jim

Yup - Julian is at Virgin Records in Reading on July 18th,
11.30 - 13.00, signing books, records, exposed buttocks, whatever.
I live up in Cheshire, but I'm gonna try and get along to it.
I know what you mean about Lester Bangs, and I agree, but I think
there is a while grey area between if something is good and if it
sucks, and my idea of whether I like something or not can/does change
over time. I think Autogeddon is good, but for JC converts rather
than anyone and everyone.
BTW - I went up to Leeds last week (to see The Wedding Present - excellent!),
and in the centre of Leeds were little yellow signs attached to lamposts,
all saying 'Autogeddon this way'. I weas in a rush to catch The Weddoes,
so I didn't have time to follow them. Anyone know if this was
Julian related?
Actually - I did play Autogeddon last night, and I enjoyed it a lot...;-) I
like Starcar, it does seem like a short album though.

Also - Julian is at the Virgin in Manchester this friday, from
11:00 until 12:30. I've rung a few other Virgin stores, and I don't
think he is visiting any others 'oop North'. (Sorry if this is
boring/irritating any non UK readers).

I haven't heard AUTOGEDDON yet, so I haven't had time to form my own opinion
of it...
Does anyone *really* like it? Does anyone think it's great?
Maybe the people who think it's great are too busy listening to it to post?

Just spoke to Julian a couple of weeks ago and he gave a typically great,
ne superb interview about the album, the book (all three of them...). I will
post it soon, but it is rather long and I haven't been able to transcribe it
yet. I've done an article for my e-mag, QRM and I can send copies of the forth-
coming issue that contains to whoever might be interested.

Out of curiosity, has anyone on here done LSD, or (ahem) do you have a
FRIEND who has done LSD? I'm fascinated by its effects on J.C. in his
book. Is it really that intense? A few of my friends from college
were into cocaine and LSD, but I never had the desire to try it, though
the curiosity was certainly there.
I wonder if it can really provide inspiration. Acid, that is. I suppose
if you write everything down as you witness it, you end up with
psychedelia.

Wow! 10 new subscribers today! Looks like THUNDER was down again all
weekend - big storms over here on the East Coast the past few days. Very
exciting, but lame when they knock down the computers.
Haven't gotten AUTOGEDDON yet, it should come soon, and I will post my initial
impression of it as soon as I hear it.
Hey, guess what, guys? I'm thinking about doing another poll! In a few
weeks, once everybody has had a chance to listen to AUTOGEDDON. There are
many new member since the last one. So those of us that have done the other
two, well, we're old pros by now!
It'd be interesting to see how the net opinion (good pun, eh?) has changed.
New albums featured in the poll will be FLOORED GENIUS II and AUTOGEDDON.
We could also have a "what do people think about HEAD ON?" entry, too.
If you have any suggestions, please e-mail me! I enjoy doing the polls,
even though a few people on the Chameleons list weren't too keen on
assigning ratings to art.
Anyway, let me know if you have any ideas for the upcoming poll, or anything
in general!
Thanks!

I don't want to go into this too deeply either, as it will make me flame
bait for life I'm sure, and I also believe there are a lot of people who
feel JC can do no wrong. I don't subscribe to that point of view, although
I am a huge fan.
I'm with you Mike. Without being too harsh I think Autogeddon is miles
ahead of anything JC has ever done for the award of worst album. It sucks
basically. S.T.A.R.C.A.R. was just the end for me, I happen to despise
Pink Floyd.
On a happier note, "Head On" is a stonkingly good read.
As a scouser myself just too young to be part of the "scene", but
deperately trying to keep up with it, the late 70's early 80's was
a truly wonderful time for me, musically. It is so nice to be able to
read about something you felt involved in at the time, retrospectively.
The Liverpool scene at the time was too exciting for words. All the
names and ego trips involved make for me fascinating reading. I would
question how accessible it is to people who weren't so involved in
the Liverpool scene, although having said that most of the names
( McCulloch,Drummond,Burns,Wylie ) all became big outside of Liverpool
as well.
One question I have to raise, is how did he remember so vividly the
events that transpired around and during the intense tripping? Or is
a lot of it glamourised? Also he seems to demonstrate a wonderful
memory in general, for someone who must have destroyed so many brain
cells in such a short space of time.
In short the book is an absolute must have for any
Cope/Teardrops/Liverpool Scene fan.

Subject: Julian gives good ear
Just met with the drude at the Virgin signing session. He is foaming
mad at Island records - big time. He sent a letter to them complaining about
the B sides compilation, they sent back his letter with sarcastic comments
all over it, which is what prompted him to send out the postcard. Now the NME
have recieved stuff from Island, moaning about him sending out the postcard
but not mentioning the sarcastic stuff they sent back to him. JC showed the
letter, it was sell bitchy.
Apart from that - he was in good form, and talked a lot to me. He says HI to
the internet community, and intends to get out here very soon. He stopped
the release of the Teardrops live lp, because Windsong refused to put it ou
on vinyl. There is a lot of unreleased Teardrops stuff, and Floored Genius
Three comes out nest year, featuring Teardrops BBC sessions. There may be
some live stuff also.
Another instrumental thing is due in october, as part of a group called
'Queen Elizabeth Hall', or something. If you are on the Magog mailing list,
you will be able to send off for a free ep of Julian stuff re-recorded with a
string quartet. Another book is up next year (Prophets, or something like
that).
Err, I had my photo taken with the drude, and he put his tongue in
my ear. He sent out to a local music shop for an acoustic guitar, and
performed two songs, and one poem. One song is 'Margaret Thatcher, Madonna,
and Courtney Love', which he cannot record and release because its libellous,
he did Julian H Cope, and a poem called 'A tweeter in woofers clothing'.
Thats about it, lots of ranting that I cant remember, he couldnt remember
the chords to Passionate Friend.
Errrmmm, more if I remember it.

Am I the first american on the list to get AUTOGEDDON?
Am I the first to find it genius? He's taken the rawness, the
"hard, gleaming" feel of JEHOVAHKILL and taken it to it's next
logical step, total insanity. It is my personal belief that
man creates his best art when he is dangling out of the basket
we call life. Julian is hanging on by one finger, and we all
know which one it is too dont we, Island? This is the best of
the three in my opinion. And I dont think J.C. can do no wrong,
just look at the mid to late 80's, 'nuff said. There are some
shades of JEHOVAHKILL here, mostly in the caveman garage stomp
of "I Gotta Walk" and "Aint but the One Way's" "No hard shoulder"
vibe. "S-T-A-R-C-A-R" out-acids "Safesurfer" with less calories
and no drag. The cover and liner notes are perfect as usual, and
K.A.K. put an insert in advertising "RITE", "The Skellington
Chronicles" and "Head On". I will order all 3!
By the way, this is my first post to the list, so hello to
all of you heads if you are out there. And yes, Francine, there

Hello, Cope Listers!
Here is my review of AUTOGEDDON, as promised:
If you don't want to be influenced by my opinions expressed
below (consider them "spoilers") then you can save this article for
after you've listened to AUTOGEDDON yourself.
   Review below...
I'm writing this as I listen to the songs for the first time...
The overall feel of the album recalls SKELLINGTON II and
JEHOVAHKILL. It's a bit sloppy in parts and very acoustic-sounding
throughout. I can see why people might hate this album. Half of
it teeters between catchy and annoying; the other half is a toss up
between "groovy" and dull.
"Don't Call Me Mark Chapman" and "Paranormal In the West Country
(Pt. 1)" are both simliar to the versions at the Edinburgh
Festival.
"Ain't But The One Way" sounds like a cover, but apparently
isn't. It sounds like something they'd play on Alternative Nation.
Maybe this is the single he was considering releasing?
"Starcar" has a drum machine, cheesy keyboards and slightly
sped-up vocals. Then, the guitars come in... "Safe Surfer" meets
"The Tower."
The album sounds very thrown-together. Supposedly, Julian kept
all of his first takes. There doesn't seem to be a lot of time put
into either the writing of the songs or the recording of them. The
cover, likewise, doesn't appeal to me like the cover for
JEHOVAHKILL did.
   It's short, too (46 minutes).
   Here goes listen number two...
He sure does cuss a lot in "Autogeddon Blues!"
Cope's music sure has changed a lot since the Teardrop Explodes!
(Or even SAINT JULIAN, for that matter...)
Basically, don't expect the ultra-polished pop sound of Cope's
earlier work.
Anyway, let us know what you think of it!

But I do have a couple of questions:
A) I don't have any of the albums that were available in the

B) I saw Cope at the Town & Country last year and thought it

Thanks.

Did anybody out there hear Julian on the Mark Radcliffe show last
week.I think that it was on the same day as his epic TOTP
appearance.He played four songs acoustically(Double
Vegetation,Julian H Cope,Sunshine Girl Rainy Day Baby and
something else that I can't quite remember) and generally yakked
about his book (he described the splitting of the Teardrops as "a dry
wank") and things in general.
All in all very enjoyable.

Hi everyone,
well I've just returned from seeing Julian and visiting a few stone
circles. I thought everybody would be sending in posts about how
unbelievable the two nights were, where is everybody?
We all got there about 7.00pm expecting queues, but there were
non (I guess we were a little too early as the show didn't
start till 9.30pm). The Lemon Tree is tiny, there were about
200 chairs and the first row was only 3 foot away from Julian.
Not that everbody didn't get a close up! He had a small, yellow
electric guitar which had a built in amp so that he could walk
amongst the audience, stand on tables or try to climb into the roof
whilst still playing. The presence he held was incredible, and his voice
& guitar were perfect, no wonder he can record songs in one take.
Anyway, the first night he was quite wild, like 'this is me, this is
what i'm like' and the second night was slightly more serious, getting
into playing his songs. Everyone was shouting out for their fav songs,
so we shouted out for the Tower but just got a funny look from him.
After that we asked for G, D and C, and got him to explain his fav
       chords!
I jumped on stage on the second night to talk to the support act
(he was Julian's rodie as well) and I thought he might be able to
get us in to see him, but later on after the gig Julian was suffering
back pains, so unfortunately I was demanded off stage for nothing.
Got to go now, I type up the set this afternoon.
Bye,
Gavin

Hi Cope fans...
A friend gave me a live Julian tape when I was visiting the UK. It's an
eighteen song concert, live at the Brixton Fridge, May 23 '91. Sounds like
an audience recording but it's quite listenable & the between song chatter
from His Copeness is clear enough to enjoy...
If anyone on this list would like a copy I'd be happy to make you one. Just
send me a blank 90 minute tape (and a few stamps if you're well off; if not
I'll do the postage & such. For fellow Cope fans, a pleasure. Drop me a line
if you're interested or want the songs on it...
I also somewhere have a tape of a radio interview here in Boston where he
talks mostly about his Barbie doll fixation. If there's enough interest in
that I'll try and dig it up, too.

Hi,
Just got back myself from Scotland & the Orkneys. I only saw JC on
the Saturday night, but I have to agree with Gavin that it was an
amazing show. We got there at about 8:30, just in time to take some
of the seats at the back - which actually proved to be a very good
choice, when he decided to take his little yellow guitar on the move,
and started clambering on the table next to us. All I can say is :
if you get the chance to go next year (as I'm sure he'll be doing it
again), then GO! You will not regret it.

Subject: tour shirt with easy rider theme
Does anyone out there know where I might be able to get one of the shirts
that were being sold a couple tours back (Peggy Suicide?) that had an easy
rider type graphic on it, I guess from the song E.E.Rider...Been kicking
myself for not getting one that night, was outta $, shoulda borrowed! Also
Cope shirts in general? I never see them in "alternative" catalogs. Anyone
know a source....?

Subject: NME's review of "Head-On"...
For anyone who isn't near a newsstand that's, uh, alternative, enough to
carry NME, here's some of the review in the Aug 6th issue of JC's
book...if this is a copyright violation to reprint it...OOPS. Just
plugging your paper, NME...ha ha
 'ALL THE YOUNG DRUDES'
"Head-On: Memories of the Liverpool Punk Scene and the Story of the
Teardrop Explodes; 1976-82" Julian Cope (Magog)
reports of julian cope's insanity have been exaggerated. not only is the
arch-drude perfectly balanced mentally, he has the longest and most
detailed memory (or the most extensive and exhaustive diary) in
rock...Cope is no Hunter S. Thompson but he's effortlessly entertaining.
He succeeds simply through a brutal honesty (towards himself as much as
anyone else), a sharp eye for character, an endearing conversational
style...often so matter of fact that you initially don't think anything
of lines like, "The milk scared me. It clung to the sides of the bottle,
and I knew that if I looked away we would be in terrible danger."...Don't
expect any sordid stories about Julian's acquaintance with one Courtney
Love. She is only mentioned fleetingly here, as "The Adolescent", and is
no more or less deranged than anyone else in this book...as a
genital-warts-and-all diary of madmen, (Head-On) is simply supreme
entertainment...
The review is written by one Johnny Cigarettes. The photo caption reads
"Exploding Liverpool inevitables: pre-bonkers Copey with his Teardrops."

Hi Travis
Wanted to make sure you & the list knew that the new issue of N.M.E. (Aug
13th), the one with Bob Mould on the cover, has a really great (as in
interesting and hilarious) review of a Cope live acoustic show at the
Aberdeen Lemon Tree. Huge (about 8x14) photo of newly bald JC playing,
and a smaller one of him giving a heckler her money back. The reviewer
praises Cope and chides the heckler, you'll be glad to know. Julian says
he has invented a new genre - "glambient". Can you feel the groundswell?

Sent your Town & Country tape off this afternoon. Should arrive Monday or
Tuesday? Sent to the Merimac Trail address.
Also sent out a copy of the Brixton show i offered to anyone on the list
to bryan sumney. his blank & a buck for postage came this morning, sent
out his tape this afternoon. Lost his email address. If you have it on
your master "list" & have a moment you might want to tell him it's enroute.
Or heck, he'll have it soon anyway!
Heard from someone I've traded a bit of American Music Club with today.
He's not into trading anymore except for real specific wants (about four
dozen semi-obscure bands) because his collection is so big now. He sells
tapes for $8 for a 90m, which isn't bad when you figure the blank,
mailer, postage & his time, etc. but I hate buying - doesn't feel as
communal as trading with other fans. I've done it when I HAD to have
something ultra great sounding, though. Anyway, he's got...

He's not on line but from past trading I know when I sent him something I
got my tape from him quick - he made it the same day. If a 90m show (or
two 45m shows) are worth $8 to you....better yet, maybe we can decide
which ones we like and get a show or two together to defray costs. He'll
still get his $8 and we can get the shows for roughly the same costs
trading incurs. Lemme know what you think.

... I've got to gloat over this... I've been combing Toronto's record stores
in search of Autogeddon for several weeks now. The Echo import was going for
betwen $28 and $35, and most store personel as usual had a) never heard
of Cope, and b) no idea if the American release would make it to Canada.
Finally, at Penguin Music (McCaul and Queen, for fellow Southern Ontarians)
I found three copies of Autogeddon: two were the American release, and were
priced around $20, but the third was the Echo CD, and they had it stickered
at $12.99!!!! Of course I grabbed it instantly and bought it... must have been
mislabeled or something... as Homer Simpson would say, "Ye-es!"
I can't believe it was all done on the first take... what a genius... I really
like the CD, but I don't think there is much in the way of single material here.
I asked CFNY, a local Cope-friendly station if they were going to playlist
and of the new stuff, and they said yes, but it's been a few weeks since they
played the Autogeddon preview, so my guess is they aren't going to do it.
A few questions... How is the _Rite_ CD? ambient dub, Orbish stuff, or what?
Any vocals/lyrics/genius songwriting/drums?
Should I pick up the Head EP, or will that material be covered in the upcoming
B-side compilation?
I have the Dancing Head EP; are there any other dancey/techno/house Cope remixes
out there, perhaps on DJ-only white label or something like that?

Hello, Copers! It's been quite quiet on here recently. Probably
because most of us are adjusting to the next semester of school.
First of all, I'm a China Crisis fan and am wondering if any of you
have heard the new album. It supposedly came out on the 6th, there
in Britain. No US release date is planned, as far as I can see. :(
Secondly, has there been any word on COpe's upcoming projects?
AUTOGEDDON has been growing on me, slowly. It's hard to think of
it as Cope, but then again Jehovahkill was the same way. I agree
with the person who said this is a contender for Worst Cope Album,
though.
Thirdly, I have about 6 or 7 bootlegs now, and am willing to
trade with people. Are there any TEARDROP boots out there? Those
would me most intersting to see. Wow what typo
what typos!
Anyway, oh yeah, the other thing: is Fear Loves... still on sale in
Britain? I'm looking for the one with the bonus disk :)
Finally, I read a tiny review of Cope's AUTOGEDDON in a mag that
I got free when I bought blank tapes at Sam Goody's. It was very
positive, calling "Don't Call Me Mark Chapman" and "Ain't No Getting
Round..." 'keepers'.

     Hi Travis and all :
Travis, if you are referring to the Jehovahkill companion,
here in Sacramento, CA. they are hanging out in several stores
even still. Tons of Cope stuff hangs out here. I even found
several copies of the East easy Rider 12" with I think
Squibbsey??(spell) on the cover, and the Barbie style Peggy
     Suicide Logo.
The excitement over AUTOGEDDON has worn off a bit, but it
is far from the worst for me. I prefer JEHOVAHKILL by a mile,
but it is a fine effort. Still painfully short to me, but I
guess we are spoiled aren't we?
Why is the list so quiet? Busy trying to find AUTOGEDDON?
My local Tower still does not have it, yet it has been in release
for quite a while now. Glad I got mine last month. Does anyone
know if the american release is different in any way? Well, quit
     lurking you guys and gals.....
                                           aaron.

I agree as well, though it is in my opinion a consistently "Cope"
album--right down to the inconsistencies. For instance "I Gotta Walk" I think
is brilliant. Well, not brilliant, but great.
>Thirdly, I have about 6 or 7 bootlegs now, and am willing to

I don't have any teardrop boots but I do have one cope one--I bought it on
vinyl several years ago and it's called "Julian WEIRDS OUT!" It's from the
St.Julian tour. I'd be willing to trade a copy for one of your bootlegs that
you can recommend.
>Anyway, oh yeah, the other thing: is Fear Loves... still on sale in
>Britain? I'm looking for the one with the bonus disk :)
I have the Fear Loves EP on CD. It's got "I have always been here before"
(from the Roky Erickson tribute album) on it, as well as two other songs that
are weirdly great and in the Jehovakill vein. I could also make you a copy
of this, but if you're holding out for an original I can't suggest where to
find one. I got my promo copy in a used bin.
Lastly I just want to say that I'm really glad that someone took the
initiative to start this mailing list. Thanks. I've been a huge (possibly
obsessive) Cope fan since 1986 and it's rare that you can find people to talk
to about his stuff in America. I don't really think this reply should go out
to the mailing list since I was mainly just referring to your specific
requests for music, so if you would just reply to me specifically (if
that's ok...)Thanks again

So, no comments on the Rite CD anyone? All I've seen of it is the advertisment
insert that came with my copy of Autogeddon. Travis said Autogeddon was a
contender for Worst Cope Album - although I don't have a complete copy of
St. Julian, it always seemed to me that My Nation Underground would be hard
to beat out for this distinction... I can't listen to it all the way through,
and I say that of very few albums that come my way. But then again,
Charlotte Anne and World Shut Your Mouth were the two songs that got me into
Cope, so the album was good for something <g>.

Subject: obscurity found....
I found an obscure slab of vinyl in an obscure little techno record store
today... One of the tracks was a remix of Head. Due to the confusing nature
of the tracklisting, I'm not sure if there are two mixes or not; it's a
double lp... I asked for it to be played, and the first mix that came up was
a very dubby mix, heavy heavy bassline, really fun stuff, but boring after a
while. It sounded like there was some distorted Cope singing in the background,
but I couldn't really tell. After that, they played me the standard dance remix
from the Dancing Head ep, so now I'm not sure if the first heavy dub was indeed
Cope or I was just imagining I heard his vocals in it. At any rate, the
release is called "110 Below", and it's on Beechwood Music out of the UK.
No idea about the rest of the material on it, but I would guess it's all techno
remixes.
Bernie
oh, that wasn't too clear: the Dancing Head mix was also on the same record,
leading to my confusion. The tracklisting was like this:
4::9 Julian Cope Heed:of Penetration & The City Dweller head remix

Subject: stuff I found at home
Hey Travis I did find some stuff at home that wasn't on the list.
First off, I've got a couple interviews. One is called "Julian
Cope--Interview Picture Disc" and it was conducted during 1984, after the
release of World Shut Your Mouth but before the release of Fried. He sounds
really loopy.
And the other interview I have comes with a double 12" version of St.
Julian, with the format being a bit of interview, then a song from the album,
then more interview, then another song etc. It's a UK release.
The 1987 New York City video was broadcast on MTV that year. I've got
almost all of it (I think I'm missing just a bit of the first song.) It's a
live show at the Ritz. The songs on it are:
Trampolene
Pulsar
Eve's Volcano
Strasbourg
St. Julian
Sunspots (long version)
Non-Alignment Pacts
Bouncing Babies
Greatness & Perfection of Love (long)
Brandy's First Jump
Shot Down
Spacehopper
World Shut Your Mouth (long intro)
I've Got Levitation (long)
There's also an Island-released video compilation called Copeulation. The
date on it is 1989. It's got some Teardrops stuff on it as well as Cope videos:
Reward
Colours Fly Away
Treason
Sleeping Gas
Greatness and Perfection of Love
Laughing Boy
Reynard the Fox
World Shut Your Mouth
Trampolene
Eve's Volcano
Charlotte Anne
5 O'Clock World
China Doll
Spacehopper
I'm betting that you know about Floored Genius 2 (Best of the BBC
Sessions 1983-91)--which was released by Nightracks / Dutch East India but
just haven't updated the list yet. Anyway if you don't have it for some reason
here's the songlist:
The Greatness & Perfection of Love
Head Hang Low
Hey High Class Butcher
Sunspots
Me Singing
Hobby
24a Velocity Crescent
Laughing Boy
O King of Chaos
Reynard the Fox
Pulsar
Crazy Farm Animal
Christmas Mourning
Planet Rider: Transmitting
Soul Medley
 I) Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow
 II) Everything Playing at Once
 III) Are You Hung Up?
IV) Hung Up and Hanging Out to Dry
You Think It's Love
Double Vegetation
OK That's all I can add to the list. I'm going to mail to you tomorrow
(Saturday).
