Actually, I don't want to send mail to this group anonymously.
>>Talking about Julian Cope is not one of those things you should be afraid
to admit to.
I'm not afaid, honest. It's just that there are other group I would LIKE to
mail anon, but I don't understand the instructions that are listed very well.
I was hoping that you with more experience with this sort of thing could
help me out. Anyways, is Julian touring now or does he have plans to soon?
If so, will he be in the Bay (San Francisco) area?
Thanks

See ya guys around.

Hi,
No one seems to have mentioned it before, but NME 2 weeks ago had a
paragraph on JC. It said that the new album is now called 'Head On' and
will be released after JC's record deal is finally finalised.
It didn't mention any dates, though. Not too long I hope.
No sign of the Teardrops album. I can't even find Floored Genius 2 here.

YO folks!
Recent news on Mr cope esq from the hallowed walls of NME is that the
new album is now no longer to be called Autogeddon, but Head On, and is due
sometime this year (whatever that means), and his book on The Teardrops Explodes
years is due some time soon too (dunno anything more about his book on
Stone Circles etc....)
More news as I hear it ;)

When I saw him last July on his Irish castles tour, he did a song, Paranoia
in the West Country, which I _think_ he said was gonna be on Autogeddon ....
But thats about it :(
The British Music press usually has loads of stuff on him when he's doing
something, and evn FGII got quite a bit of coverage, but there's not a lot
about him at the minute - Head On is still quite a mystery .......
Has anyone any of his lyrics on line, or worked out anymore guitar stuff?
I propose we get a lyrics file together....

I'm afraid I don't have any information on anything, but I do have a
question about 3 albums. Does anyone know anything about Rite? I read
about it in NME about a year ago. Also, is either Droolian or Piano
available? In all my travels, I have yet to come across either album (and
if I have them, my collection will be complete).

RITE was mail-order only, I think. It's 4 instrumentals, a total
of about 70 minutes. I'd love to have it on CD, but I don't know if
they are still offering it via mail.
DROOLIAN is really hard to find. Out of print. I think your best bet
is to talk someone into dubbing it for you. Again, I would love to
have this one on CD too.
PIANO I do have on CD. Bought it in Richmond, along with WILDER. I don't
think I have seen it in the stores since then.
When you say your collection will be complete once you get these 3 albums,
does that mean you have all the B-sides? Some are excellent.
Good luck finding these things. Hurry up, Head On!!!!!!!!

I saw "When the Pyramid Meets The Eye" in the store the other day. Anybody
think this is worth getting? The only other Roky Erikson I have is the
best-of, which I think is very good at times. I like Cope's version of
"I Have Always Been Here Before" tons better than the Roky version. Put
them side to side and you'll realize how much more melodic Cope's voice is.
Oh yeah, anybody know how I can get a subscription to NME?
Or Melody Maker? Which ever is the better - I forgot.
Thanks.

TRAV'S FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIMES:
(in no order)
Julian Cope - FLOORED GENIUS
Julian Cope - PEGGY SUICIDE
Chameleons - STRANGE TIMES
Bob Marley - SONGS OF FREEDOM (boxed set)
Police - MESSAGE IN A BOX (boxed set)
heh, heh, I know the last 2 were cop-outs but who cares. The police box
contains *all* their albums, *all* their B-sides, plus some live cuts.
Great deal.
The Marley is just plain awesome too. It's like an elongated LEGEND.
Super.
The Chameleons CD is their peak.
Oh yeah, I guess a real close 6th would be:
The Cure - KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME
Go ahead and post your 5 fav's. THey don't necessarily have to be
in the same vein as Cope (Marley certainly isn't).
Take care everybody.

First of all, about Rite. It has four tracks, two of which are about
25 minutes long, the other two about 10 minutes. All instrumentals,
and more funky than you would think - bits of kraut rock thrown in.
The tracks are:
1. The Indians Worship Him, But He Hurries On
2. Amethysteria
3. Bringing Cherhill Down (Part 1)
4. In Search Of Ancient Astronomies
Tracks are written by Copey and Donn-eye, with Rooster Cosby on track
1. It was only sold by mail order from Ma-gog records who put out The
Skellington Chronicles. I don't have the address as a friend picked
these up for me (as I'm in Canada these days) so can't offer more help
than that. It is worth picking up though.
As for Droolian, as far as I know it was like Skellington and was
deleted as soon as it came out. I had a helluva time trying to find
it, and evetually got my copy at the Rough Trade shop in London on
vinyl. I know it was out on CD, and the CDs were actually easier to
find, but I haven't seen them listed anywhere in a long time. So I
can't help there - it is a really weird album; even more so than
Skellington but it is the original source of Safesurfer so that counts
for something.
Has ANYONE gotten the Teardrops live? I must send out my search
parties back home for it along with Floored Genius II which I haven't
gotten either. And has anyone gotten any good bootlegs to swap? I have
a rather good one from the Highlands and Islands tour, so interested
parties get in touch.
And finally, just to take up some more space, here's my top five
albums of the moment....
Prisonshake - "The Roaring Third". Just decent guitar rock music.
Nothing fancy, just honest music.
The Orchids - "Striving For The Lazy Perfection". The new album from
Scptlands best band of the moment. Dreamy pop that deserves more
attention.
Julian Cope - "World Shut Your Mouth". I drag it out every so often
just to admire its splendor. And wonder how they could leave Sunshine
Playroom off Floored Genius.
Elvis Costello - "Almost Blue". The best attempt to try and take
country into the mainstream, and a very brave move.
The Left Banke - "And Suddenly". Sometimes I really do think that they
don't make music like they used to....
Bear in mind that is my favourite this week, next week it will
probably change again. I'm fickle that way.
                         Regards,
                              Michael

I've a couple bootlegs:
Astoria Theater (1 Nov 1986)
Portree & Invergordon (July 1992)
Sound qualities are so-so, but as Cope bootlegs tend to be rare, they
aren't anything to complain about.
FLOORED GENIUS II is good. Got it from Tony in Ireland, who still needs
to tell me what to mail him!
If anyone wants to trade boots w/ me, let me know!
Too bad I can't digitize them and upload them to thunder.swa.com :(

When i say my collection is complete, i don't mean B-sides, though i do
have a sizeable collection. incidentally, my favorite cope song at the
moment is world class butcher from the in defense of animals compilation
(actually about the only redeeming feature of the album is this song).
I've heard the erikson tribute, and didn't care for it, though i did enjoy
j. c.'s song. if i were to give you my address (postal address), would you
perhaps send me these vaulted bootlegs. i imagine that my sources are less
resourceful than yours, so i might turn to you for help. also, what ever
came of cope's directory to prehistoric sites? Speaking of this, anyone in
the midwest might consider visiting the serpent mound pictured on the last
page of the jehovahkill liner notes. it's about 2 hours east of
cincinnati, and an hour south of columbus. i found it quite enlightening.
for continuity's sake, my favorite five at the moment:
skellington (i'm currently making a video for robert mitchum for a video
production class);
world shut your mouth (strasbourg is a brilliant song, almost as much as
elegant chaos)
nick cave and the bad seeds -  live seeds (the weeping song is fabulous);
pj harvey  -dry;
vampo marble eye  -two trick pony  ( a local group who hit it big);

A non-music related question, if you don't mind. If I remember correctly,
you're from Canada. All Canadian beers in this country (US) have the
surgeon general's warning on them. Is this added only to imports, or do
you have a similar warning on domestics?

Yikes! I'm getting beer queries now? Oh well....first of all to put
the record straight, I'm actually from Scotland but I am at school in
Canada so thus familiar with the beers in question (although only
through other people as I am not a beer drinker myself). And to answer
your question, the beers up here do not have the warning on them - I
imagine it is just for export because the US beers are so weak that
the Canadian beers could damage some of the more delicate american
palates. I still remember how it was described to me; US beers are so
weak that its easier to pour the beer straight down the toilet and cut
out the middle man...
But back to Copey...I remembered what else I had to add - on thr
Rhythm list is 'Piano' on vinyl or tape for four pounds fifty in case
someone is real desperate to pick it up - I can post the address if
anyone wants.
That's it unless there are any more alcohol related questions I can
deal with (where do us Scots get such a reputation?)
                              Adios,

I've said earlier that I really enjoy Robert Mitchum (the song). Well, if
you'll notice on actual CD Skellington itself, Julian Cope and Ian
McCullough are credited with writing the song. Well, this reminded me that
Copey used to hang out at this place called Aunt Twackey's on Matthew St.
in Liverpool. He hung out there with Ian McCullough and Paul Rutherford
and Jayne Casey and the guys from Wah!, which I found quite interesting. I
doubt very much that Aunt Twackey's is still there (J.C. was there in
1977-78), but it is the place where he first saw the Sex Pistols, the
Clash, the Buzzcocks, and all those other seminal bands.
Travis said that the TX live CD is due in february, but february is almost
over. Is it out yet?
Also, Travis, how's this: I will send you some blank tapes, and you can
record those bootlegs for me. I have your address, and I reckon you have
mine.

I just read your message on alt.music.alternative regarding Julian
Cope..I've been a fan since the mid-80's when he began his solo
career...never seen him live..when he toured for 'peggyu suicide' in
aug 1990, i missed the show due to a vacation in florida..looking
back now, i should have skipped florida and went to see him...
a lot has happended since then...most important is that he doesn't
have a record label here in the US ..his new album is supposed to
come out in england in april on a new label..after being dropped from
island it has taken him a while to get singed again...too many record
execs think he is too 'out there'...but the brit press and fans still
adore him and regard him as one of the finnest british performers..his
show last year at the phoenix festival was the highlight of the whole
festival..
just recently he released the second part to 'floored genius'...have
you bought it?? if so, I would like a have a copy if possible..this
part features peel sessions and the sort...It got good reviews in select
,NME, and melody maker...
well, i just wanted to write and let you know that there other fans
out there who miss him...can;'t wait for the new album..it actually
was completed last year, but it took him a while to get signed..
gotta go..talk to you again

   since you seem interested
2. TX live not out as far as I know. FEB release date and yes only 4 more
days
of FEB left. I've my fingers crossed, on that and on the
"April" release of Head On.
3. Topic for conversation: hat do you think of
EVERYBODY WANTS TO SHAG and why do think it is generally regarded
as inferior to Wilder and Kilimanjaro? (I mean, *vastly* inferior).

I consider Everybody wants to shag... a novelty at best. The only good
songs are In-Psychelopedia and Serious Danger. Metranil Vavin and
Pussyface have been gutted, in my opinion. It seems to me that whoever
worked on this album said hey, Renegade Soundwave and Parliament
Funk-a-delic are popular right now, let's try to get that sound. Now,
those are 2 okay bands, but not true to the Cope ethos.
Just a humble opinion

Well, 'everybody wants to shag' was sort of a leftover..but I would
say it ranks up there..maybe not as high as Wilder and Kilimanjaro..but
it provides a missing piece to the entire picture...

I think that Everybody Wants to Shag is actually really great, for the
following reasons:
Ouch Monkeys
Soft Enough For You
Strange House in the Snow
Of course, all the songs have their merits in my opinion. The only thing
I would say to slag the album is that lots of the songs are cheesy and
not produced with what I would consider good taste. Hmmmmm. "This dope
is really starting to KICK IN!" Guess I'd better sign off before I
degenerate into nonsensicality.

The place where all these bands played in Liverpool was called "Erics" a, now
( and then, for that matter ) legendary venue on Matthew Street opposite the
original site of the Cavern. Anybody who was anybody in those heady punk days
played here. There was always different bands playing and matinee performances
for the younger crowd ( like myself back then ). All the Liverpool bands
started here from Deaf School, Big In Japan through Echo, Teardrops, Wah!,
Pink Military, OMD, Ian Broudie under various guises, you name it. A totally
stellar place. The police closed it down for some reason which I can't remember.
But I can remember the demonstrations outside to
prevent it. Truly awesome time. It later reopend as "Bradys" but never rekindled
the enthusiam or atmosphere of "Erics". This too was later closed down.

All of these, of course, are B-sides to original TE singles. They shouldn't
have left "Suffocate" off "Everybody wants...".

I just wonder when it was *really* mixed/produced. Reviews at the time
mentioned the similarity of some of the songs to contemporary acid house,
though on the other hand it isn't that far removed from the direction the
Teardrops were moving in. I would have preferred a compilation album of
B-sides, remixes etc - seems a bit strange to have most of the "You Disappear
From View" b-sides and "Strange House" tacked onto a half-finished (and not
very good) album.

I thought I would let everyone all know that 'Floored Genius II' has just
been released here in the U.S. by Dutch East India Trading...along
with other Peel sessions from the wedding present and mega city four..
It should be able in your local shop, otherwise e-mail me and i'll give
you the address to DEIT...
and 'Soul Melody' is just brilliant..

Three things:
1. Anyone have any sort of address for JC or his management? Four
different albums have four different addresses.
2. Credited with arrangement on St. Julian is one Joss Cope. Any relation?
3. I have here in my hand a maxi-single called Fear Loves This Place: A
JehovahKill Companion. It has Fear...; I Have Always Been Here Before, the
Roky Erikson tribute song; Sizewell B, reminiscent of Everybody Wants to
Shag....; and Gogmagog. Anyway, on the back is a little message that I
think sums up a lot, and I will transcribe it for those who haven't read
it:
Drudes,
On the front of the last Guns 'N' Roses LP, a piss-poor sticker tells us
that if we don't like their music we should "F*** off to the New Age
Section...." A-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...those poor dupes, saps, knobshines in
their smug LA rebellion. They think the louder they get, the more
rebellious it is. Well, then, the greatest rock 'n' roll would be made by
the USAF or the Red Army--they are truly heavy metal--not some homophobics
in Puff gear. They don't even have the guts to print the word "Fuck!"
Forgive their Judeo-Christian hang-ups. But understand this. The old rock
'n' roll badboy lives in a Government-Approved prison of Ciggies & Beer.
If there is to be a New Age, then it is to be Hard, Gleaming, Insane and
Starry-eyed. The days of digging Charles Manson and carting old bones
around your stage-set should be long gone--it shocks only the people who
thought the new U2 album was "Weird." As William Burroughs wrote, it's
time to "retake their universe of fear, death, and monopoly."
The Arch-Drude, Calne, Wessex, August 1992 C.E.
Enjoy

The reference in Reynard The Fox leads me to beleive Joss is his younger
brother.

IMPORTANT.
After extensive debugging I found the reason why my script files have been
freezing up. This ancient mail system I'm on is having trouble mailing
a defunct address, so it'd get stuck in an endless loop or something.
Anyway, I deleted the address from my mail.list script and everything seems to
be wokring again.
So here are some post that 2/3 of you will have seen before, but the rest
probably haven't:

Um, the list has been VERY quiet the past month or so. In fact, today's post
was the first in maybe a couple weeks. So don't worry - y'all aren't
being left out. One thing weird *IS* happening, though: my mailing scripts
are freezing up, even if I let them run for hourse. Normally it takes only
a couple of minutes to mail everyone on the list.
So anyway, if mcdowall or eugene or NSCHANDL get this message, please let me
know. You guys are the latest subscribers so you are at the end of the list.
Hopefully there isn't a buggy address screwing everything up.
Okay, about Cope, I haven't heard squat about either the Teardrop Explodes
Live CD or Head On. I do know, however, that Floored Genius II has been
available in the U.S. for some time now. If you don't have a copy yet, bug
your local CD store. It might be an import; I don't know.
Good luck finding stuff guys, and if anyone has any more info please
let us know.  Thanks

I recently "won" the Julian Cope CD "Jehovahkill" and as I am embarassingly
ignorant of his work, I'm wondering if you can tell me something about this
record. Judging by the content, I doubt it's a good indicator of what his
music is usually "about" (for lack of a better word...).
After a few listens, instinct tells me that Jehovahkill is/was a dud albeit
a work with much conviction (no offense, of course!!).
Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.. thanks in advance.

...Floored Genius II has been out in the US for a month or so..
domestically...i posted a message a while back , but anyway, Dutch East
India Trading(who releases all the BBC sessions in the US) released the
record mid-feb...there address and phone # is:
Dutch East India Trading
PO box 800
Rockville Centre, NY 11571-0800
(516)764-6200
you can call for a catalog, or ask your local shop to get it from them..
should cost you no MORE than $12.99...otherwise order it directly from DEIT.
DEIT also released radio sessions from the wedding present and mega
city four that same month...
help keep them alive and buy their stuff..they have a huge list of
other BBC sessions...
...no 'new' news on 'autogeddon' ...i'll keep checking my melody maker's
and select mags...
hopefully a mid-april release....

I've rewritten my mailing scripts so I can tell whose address the mailer gets
hung up on. So far everything is running smoothly again. :)
Got today's new-releases list (email)
No word of Teardrops or Cope. :(
I think mid-April would be terrific, however I ain't too optimistic, given the
delays for Floored Genius II and the Teardrops live stuff.
Happy listening everyone!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regarding JEHOVAHKILL, I don't think it's a "dud." It is definately
un-commercial, and probably his least poppy (least accessable) album.
I really wonder how weirded-out Head On will be. We'll see.

I agree with Travis: Jehovahkill is the least accessable, which might
frighten people off, but I consider it his best, if for no other reason
than it represents something: it's an opus in the classical sense of the
word (compare it to current college radio hits "I'm a loser" by Beck or
"Shave your face of" by M.I.R.V.--musically and lyrically vapid).
