Regarding the release of "Floored Genius" and hopefully "Foreign
Genius", I have started to wonder when a BBC radio sessions compilation may
come out, if ever. I've got a bunch of early Cope sessions, and i know
that there's about a half-dozen teardrops sessions. There must be dozens
of songs from these various sessions, and only 24a Velocity Crescent has
been released as far as I know. Maybe Cope will have to quit the business
or something before they'll get a proper release.
wishful thinking,

I think it's best the way it is. I want to know what that guy may have found
in NME during lunch as soon as possible.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, seems people are in the voting mood. Got one vote for digest,
one vote for leave it how it is unless traffic gets too high, and of course
mark's leave-it-the-way-it-is. IF anyone else wants to "vote" feel free!
You know how much I like giving polls! :)
If this were automated software, I could split it into digest and non-digest
groups. But it's not.

Thanks for trying, Brian.
Hey, y'all, here's the deal:
every once in a while I get mail sent back to me when i post to everybody.
Basically, if you have a particulary buggy account, prone to lots of down-
time, well, please leave me a note so i don't unsubscribe you. Basically,
if a certain person's mail keep bouncing back to me, say for an entire week,
well, I'll assume that person's account no longer exists. I will comment
the line in my mail.list file that sends stuff to that person, so no more
mail will be sent. A month or so later, I will uncomment those lines and
post again, see if their mail is still getting sent back to me. If it is, I
delete them. Else, we go on as normal.
So just let me know of you expect your account to go down for a while, and
I'll refrain from zapping you. :)
Sorry this was so boring. I'll write something fun next time.
Travis
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey, remember back last Spring when I tried to get people to buy my
compilation album "Songs to Sleep By"? Well, feel free to do the same.
If you have a tape of music you'd like people to listen to and critique,
go ahead and write up an "ad" for it and I'll post it to the list.
By the way, I've written another 55 minutes of songs since then. Some of them
are pretty good, and so maybe during break I'll put together a second
compilation, this time called "Songs to Study By". I'll include the cool
oldies not on "Sleep" and some Dead Anchovies which I forgot to include last
time, and I'll add the better new stuff. We're looking at maybe another 90
minute compilation. I know this is premature, but is anyone interested in
checking this baby out? I'm gonna drop the price to $4 including shipping
and handling. Not out to make money, just to get a little exposure :)

Sorry to seem ignorant, but does this mean that Foreign Genius is
a BBC sessions CD? Yes - there are loads of Cope sessions around
the vaults. The BBC just put out a great Wedding Present Sessions collection.
(Am I allowed to mention the Weddoes in here?).

Its been a bit quiet for the past few days hasn't it? Anyway, nothing
much to say at the moment - just wondered if we had gotten to the
bottom of the Foreign Genius mystery. And my vote is for keeping the
mailings the way they are at the moment; if the volume was much
greater it may make sense to condense mailings. Sitting here listening
to Fried - its been a while and it still sounds wonderful. Has anyone
else got the huge poster of Jules and the shell in theirs? Kinda
spectacular. That's it - I hope someone can tell me what this Foreign
Genius thing is as my curiosity has been piqued.
                           Michael Edwards
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, so far seven people have said they want the mailing kept the way it
is (including me) and only one person wants digest. Unless 6 other
pro-digests mail me in the next couple days, thing are probably gonna
remain the same! :)
I too am very curious about Foreign Genius. I am also very excited about
the upcoming Autogeddon, whenever it decides to come out. I remember last
year, I first heard about Jehovahkill about 2 weeks before my bud Jim mailed
it to me. That was a nice short wait! :) Hopefully Autogeddon will come
out soon!
I don't have any posters of Julian. Only album covers and xeroxed articles.
He is really an uglyboy on the cover of Skellington / Skellington II, but
then he's quite handsome on My Nation Underground (is that really him?!?)
and then he's real gaunt on Fried and now on Jehovahkill he's got that
healthy balding englishman look, with long hair in back, of course. What
does he *really* look like, in person? Does he really dance around in tights?
From some boots I have acquired in the past few months, I take it he likes
to tour solo now. No backing band. Guess there's not much room for
his birdmikestand anymore.

Good morning!
Hopefully today we'll find something out about "Foreign Genius"! (It's

Thanksgiving break starts Wednesday, and goes on until Sunday, so if
there's a lag in convo, don't despair. I'll probably log on at home anyway.
   Have a good week everybody!

In reply to some stuff, yes Julian seems to be touring solo since
Peggy, appart from last years tour of England. Everything else has been
acoustic, the islands tour and the castles tour. And yes, he does prance
about in tights, its true! As to how Julian looks himself, at the moment
he looks much like the wild, rustic image as on Fried, but with
considerably longer hair. My lady friends think he is a hunk, and I have
to say, the Skellington picture does him no justice (same as the actual
recording on the album). The one thing I did find when I finally saw him
in the flesh was that he is a big lad! I'm 6'2" and he was not far
behind me, which surprised me! Also, another friend who was at his gig
in Dublin had the dubious honour of Julian waving hids crotch in his
face whe he jumped up on and empty seat in front of him during his walk
around the audience. He says ol' Jules is well endowed in that dept.!
              Top Trivia!

Today's NME has some good news and some bad news. The good news is that
JC looks like signing to the new ECHO label, and an album of radio 1
sessions is due out at the end of the month. The bad news is that the
new album proper won't be out until next March.
The radio sessions album, "Floored Genius Two" will have 17 tracks, and
will be released on Strange Fruit. It will feature tracks from 1983 to
1991.

Any more info about the Floored Genius II?
End of November, right? Within the next week or so, then?
Has anyone seen the 120 minutes (MTV) that had Cope on it? I missed
it, whenever it was. Has he ever been on MTV besides that?
I checked with my local music store (I'm home for Thanksgiving) and they
have no news of any upcoming Julian Cope releases. I wonder if FGII is
going to be UK-only :(

Okay, people - time to wake up!
What's going on in Britain with the Radio Show CD? Floored genius II, eh?
Well, it's 29 Nov, and tomorrow the "end of the month" and I'm wondering
if FG2's release date was supposed to be end of NOVEMBER or end of DECEMBER.

"Floored Genius Two" was in ye shoppes yesterday. The cover is similar to
"Floored Genius", with the infamous Iggy impersonation on the back. Mid-price
as well, which makes it excellent value for money. Inside are 17 tracks from
the Radio 1 sessions, mainly from the WSYM/Fried era. Only one new song,
"Hobby", which is a half-finished thing, plus the "Soul Medley".
Track listing: (not necessarily in the right order)
Greatness & Perfection / Head Hang Low / Hey High Class Butcher / Reynard
24a Velocity Crescent / O King of Chaos / Laughing Boy / Me Singing / Sunspots
Hobby / Pulsar / Crazy Farm Animal / Christmas Mourning
Planet Rider : Transporting / Soul Medley: Free Your Mind (Funkadelic) +
Everything Playing at Once + Are You Hung Up? (Mothers of Invention) +
Hanging Out and Hung Up on the Line / You Think It's Love / Double Vegetation
The whole thing is a shade over an hour long. "You Think It's Love" is the
same song as "You" on "Peggy Suicide" - was this the track left off the CD
version?

Andrew - a couple of questions regarding "Floored Genius II":
Is it Julian by himself or does he have a back up band?
Is the sound quality boot-leg par or more along the lines of Peel Sessions?
Did you hear any mention of it being released in America?
Oh yeah, the track not on the Peggy CD is "Uptight".
Thanks for the track listing! I (and probably many more of us) are very
eager to get our hands on this baby.

Is anyone over there in Britain willing to mail me a CD of FLoored Genius II

incompatible currencies, but a trade would work rather well - If there are
any CDs you've been meaning to buy but for some reason can't find, i can look
for them here.
Thanks a bunch,

> Andrew - a couple of questions regarding "Floored Genius II":

It varies - one session is Julian, Joss and Donald, but most of them feature
a full band - the first one has Kate StJohn on woodwind, for instance.
> Is the sound quality boot-leg par or more along the lines of Peel Sessions?
Some of these are Peel sessions. It's on Nighttracks records rather than
Strange Fruit, as some of the sessions were done for the evening show (Janice
Long & David Jensen), but basically it's all the same - sessions recorded in
a single day in the BBC's own studios. Sound quality is excellent, the
performances are fairly live-sounding, as you might expect.
I haven't heard anything about US release, I suspect not. The Wedding Present
have recently had a similar album released, and I don't think that has reached
the States either. I'll get the name of a reputable mail-order company and
post it tomorrow.

Do you know if Gema Records accepts US personal cheques?
I assume we just mail away for a catalog, wait 14 to 20 days for a response,
then mail away our money, wait 14 to 20 days, then pray our CD gets to us.
That's at the least 28 to 40 days. And I live on the East Coast!
Anyone know the price the mail order place wants?
THanks for getting the info, Andrew!

HI Travis - I hope you get this. My recent mails have all bounced
back after a couple of days.
I read that in the New YEar, it didn't say exactly when, then Windsong
label (the label that is releasing the BBC Radio 1 concert series), are
putting out a TEardrop Explodes concert. I don't have any info on recording
date or track listing I'm afraid. I'll let you know more info

Hey, a teardrops album wow! Thanks for the tip, Mikef. By the way, I got
4 letters from you saying the same thing! :) I guess there's something
wrong with your mailers!
Everybody - there was mention made of Roky Erikson (sp?) and I looked him
up in all the stores here and in Charlottesville, but I found nothing by
him. Are there other Roky listeners out there?
Sorry this list has been a bit quiet. I'm eagerly awaiting Floored Genius 2,
and when I get it I'll post a full review for those (mostly Americans) who
haven't heard it yet.
Those of you who have been fortunate enough to go to some of Cope's recent
concerts - do you have any comments on his new material? Is it any good?
Does he ever talk about his upcoming album?
Question - who were the "Chameleons" that produced some of the earlier
Teardrops stuff? Certainly not Mark Burgess and crew. Did the Chameleons
also have a hand in early Echo and the Bunnymen?
Anyone know what's up with Ian McCulloch? How about the rest of the
Bunnymen?
Any news on the book Cope is writing?

Oooopps...sorry about all the mails, but I keep getting 'not delivered'
messages an them...
Ian McCulloch was on the Peel show on Radio 1 last Saturday, actually phoning
in with a report on a football (soccer) match, but he mentioned that he was in
the studio recording some new stuff, and he hoped it would appear around May.
Roky Erikson and the Aliens? Isn't he an American musican 60's hangover
type?
There did used to be a band called The Chameleons - don't know if they
still exist though.
MIkef
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The band "The Chameleons" was around in the early 80's and broke up around '85
I think.
Thanks for the info on Ian McColluch. Last night I dubbed the "Lover Lover
Lover" and "Honeydrip" EPs by him.
Is the 13th Floor Elevators stuff any good?
y, everybody: aside from Cope, who are your favorite musicians? I wonder
anomolous intersection.
Me personally: Chameleons, Cure, Police, Bela Fleck.
Take care and happy holidays!

Hi, Travis --
> ...everybody: aside from Cope, who are your favorite musicians? ...
Tough question, since there are so many... but some that come immediately
to mind are:
The Fall
Echo & The Bunnymen
Killing Joke
Pere Ubu
Stewart Copeland
The Rest (my own band :) )
And of course, "meat and potatoes" bands like
Jimi Hendrix
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
James Brown
And since you said "musicians" and not just rock acts, I'll add:
Miles Davis
Charlie Parker
Frank Sinatra
Sergei Prokofiev
George Szell
Gidon Kremer
So what do they (and Julian) all share, apart from my devotion? I dunno,
perhaps a very individualistic style and a combination of lyricism with
an inventive, sometimes even jagged sound...
So, Travis, who are some musicians that people _hate_? :) I'll start off
with John Lennon, Sting, Leonard Bernstein...

I was hoping someone else would take this on but, here goes.
Roky Erikson(sp?) was in the Texas proto-psychedelic band
_The 13th Floor Elevators_ mostly known for the song
"You're Gonna Miss Me". After a few albums, Roky got
busted for pot and ended up in a mental hospital(trying
to keep out of jail). He's been a bit wacky ever since.
He currently lives here in Austin(and I actually hung out
with him occasionally, not knowing who he was at first).
Julian was in town a few years back for the SXSW Music
Conference. He was supposed to perform an acoustic
set at the Hyatt but backed out at the last minute, which
really pissed me off since I got off work early to go.
He did make amends by promising to send a cd of his
next album to anyone who left their address. I received
a cassette of _Peggy Suicide_ some months later.
I digress. Julian did meet his idol Roky during his visit.
Roky was busted when police found stacks of his neighbor's
mail in Roky's possession(I imagine that's a felony). He
is out of the mental hospital and lives in an apartment
just outside of Austin. He surrounds himself in a cacophony
of sound by playing multiple radios at high volume as well
as watching horror videos. He occasionally plays a short
set of his songs with local musicians.
One of Julian's songs on _Peggy Suicide_ has the line,
"Does it sound like the Elevators, will it sell more than
the Boss", which refers to Roky. If you wan't to listen
to his stuff, there's a Roky "Greatest Hits" album out
(post-Elevators). Also try "Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye",
a tribute album by "alternative" bands (including Cope and REM).
Sorry if this is a bit muddled. I'm padding an early morning
stream of consciousness.

The Chameleons don't exist any more - and they had no connection with the
Chameleons who appear on the "To the Shores of Lake Placid" album.
Incidentally, when I switched Peel on on Saturday he was playing one of the
songs from "FG2" - "Head Hang Low" I think.

The above could almost be a Fall lyric! Other current favourites: Leonard
Cohen, Slowdive, Seefeel, Nirvana, Frank Zappa (RIP).
